My guinea pig dispute doing so well recently for a uti had to be taken back to the vets this morning as she was not eating or drinking. Her tummy was tender he has taken her in for xray . I feel sick not only with worry for her but the cost. My husband has said that paying this amount of money is not sustainable . I have to ring up at 3 pm .
 
I am very sorry! Vet cost are going up very quickly at the moment. :(

I am keeping my fingers very firmly crossed that the cause can be found, addressed and dealt with. If it is a bladder stone, then she will need an operation, but there are things you can do afterwards to minimise the risk of a re-occurrence.
 
What a difficult thing to be going through, and it is doubly hard when you are concerned for your pet's welfare as well as the bills.
But for most of us, it isn't a bottomless pit of money, and it can be daunting when you get lots of vet's bill in a short time.
Hopefully it won't be as bad as you think, and the vet will have some answers for you this afternoon.
Thinking of you and hoping for a good (and cheap!) outcome.
 
I spent so much in a week trying to save my baby-it adds up soo fast. I have as credit card just for medical expenses-mine or my pets. I don't use it for routine costs but if something bad happens I have it so that I can treat them and have some time to pay it back.
 
I phoned the vet at 3 and they had time to do the xray yet she has to stay over night cos she was not peeing very much and when the do the xray later if they find a stone they will operate right away. If I don't get a phone call before hand I have to phone between 8:15 and 8:30 pm. The vet has said we can pay half on pick up and half next month or I might just put the whole lot on credit card not sure which will work out best. The results of the urine test were high protein which was higher then the results she first had but the other results were lower a d no blood so the bayril has worked . They are concerned that the urine was not concentrated enough and that her kidney area was tender. Could still be stone or uti but until xray done still up in the air.

And depending on the rate of interest your credit card changes, it might be cheaper to try and pay half at pick up, and the other half directly to the vets in a month.
 
Well have heard from the vet. Xray showed what they think is 3 stones in her bladder. she is scheduled to have op in the morning. If when they open her up it turns out to be tumors them he will ring me to give me the option to let her go under the anesthetic. I am hoping for stones:ple: She is spending the night at the vet as they can monitor he urination and pain and as the vet said I can get some sleep. Will see what tomorrow brings
 
I really hope all goes ok with the op. If it is stones and they are removed we can help you with some dietary changes that could possibly help prevent them recurring.
 
I have been gradually changing her veg over the last few weeks, she was a big lover of Kale which I now know is a high food, she has excepted a change to occasional lettuce pepper (do different colour pepper have different contents) she loves coriander and cucumber. I need to print the list of the high and low foods. I need to change the pellets. does this have to be a gradually thing as she has now been at the vets for a day being fed critical care and not had her normal pellets. Could someone post a link to the Daily Veg guide for bladder piggy's cant find it at the moment

Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

It is the daily veg section that you need, this is loosely based on a diet that was put together by someone I know who did a lot of research into bladder issues in pigs. The idea is that they have a wide variety of hay while on this diet too. It is known as the IC diet. I know she has made some tweaks to the veg recently but I need to find out more about that.
 
Operation day did not go as planned. Firstly as well as stones she had ovarian cysts. They gave her hysterectomy and removed two of the stones the third they scrapped away as much as possible But it was to embedded in bladder to remover it. We went to the vet tonight expecting to say goodbye to her. Today they had a vet visiting from Australia who is a guniea pig expert he said she had come through the op and he things that with the high hormones gone that the cysts were causing a d a change of diet that the small stone left might go by itself. So for now she is at the vet still Sunday when they will do another x ray to see how things have settled.
 
I bet that was a shock. I hope she recovers ok and that the stone does go by itself.
 
Yes very much so . She must off had them a while but had no hair loss . Her pain will hopfully be gone and she has a rest full nights at the vet. Big incision on her tummy though.
 
I am jumping the shark here but hope for the best and that Isabella comes home to us so want to be prepared.

I have a supply of critical care and syringes but want to make sure she has food available to eat herself, I have got some Timothy hay to put in a rack and soft pasture hay for bedding (although will keep her on towels and fleeces until wound has heal ) I have order a low calcium pellet food from zoo-plus but until that arrives which will hopefully be before she is home, can I just offer veg and if so what would be the best to give her. Never had to care for a piggie that has gone through surgery before.:help:

I am up very early today for a Saturday, 4:30 my brain just wont settle, going through bank balance etc. Looks like she will be in the vets to at least Sunday when another xray will be done. If I have to feed critical care how many times do you need to do this per day or does this depend on how much she is eating herself and her weight.

She's really been through it, poor girlie. But I bet she'll be so glad to come home. She's going to need some tlc for a while. Shout out if you need help,or support.
 
Thanks everyone. I have just been reading some stories about using cytease for bladder problems. Do you think i should give it a try? can it be given along side medication don't want to bombard her system when she gets home:mal: so many questions in my head I will give myself a headache :lol!:
 
Yes, you can give her Cystease alongside her regular medications. One of my boars has it daily.
 
I believe you need to make sure she gets as much water as possible to help keep the sludge moving through the bladder. Exercise once she is over the worst is also key to keep everything moving.

Normally and especially at times of illness and stress like operations and when using medications I give all mine Pets at Home Pro C which contains probiotic (friendly bacteria), soluable fibre (prebiotic), vitamin c and glucose which all provides digestive support. I honestly swear by it. It also must taste nice cause mine will drink twice the amount when it is mixed in their water than without it.

Thanks for advice. She was already on Pro -c as she had been on Baytril for a while and she loves it also. Had also been given her diluted cranberry juice
 
So today is the day i will find out if Isabella can come home. I am hoping that the piece of stone left in her bladder does not effect her, my thinking is that if they could not get it out it is not going to move around and they made it as small as was safely to do.

I have not received her low calcium pellets yet so do i still make the other pellet available or just fed veg and hay until they arrive?
 
In theory piggies do not need pellets to live on. They only should be getting a small amount each day anyway. To ensure she is eating which is the most important thing at the moment a bit of everything she wants/likes should do her no harm.

By the time she is getting back to herself you can be organised to start off her new healthy lifestyle. Read up on all the threads you can on this to be prepared.

I believe @helen105281 has experience of this also so she may be able to answer any queries you may have if needed.

What pellet have you ordered? I'm just in the middle of finalising my pellet guide which should help.

I have ordered Vitacraft emotion .

She won't be coming home today as she is having xray so I might have them tomorrow.
 
Just want to say how lucky you are to have had such a wonderful vet. I really pray that things turn out, know if they do t you did everything available and more for your baby

Mine are on those at the moment and they like them. You may need to break them in half as they are quite large.
 
@helen105281 Thank for the info. @Cookies&Glitter thank you I have to ring Vet tomorrow afternoon to find out results of x ray ans there was a bit of the stone they could not get out. need to know if this will effect her in anyway. At the moment she is doing well drinking and eating they are still giving her some critical care just to support her system even if she can't come home tomorrow I want to go and see her.
