Hi,
My guinea pig is blind in one eye hes about 2 years ,for awhile now hes been attacking himself and and been losing his hair and he has seizures and hes drinking alot ,at first we thought it was the other guinea pig but its not the case ,we have separated them for now .please can u help

Has he been to a vet? He could have a severe case of mites as these will make a piggy bite and scratch and cause seizures if left untreated. Please have him see a piggy savvy vet as a matter of urgency and don't use shop bought mite treatments under any circumstances as these won't help.

@sport_billy can you move this thread please x

Hi & Welcome Lisa, I really don't have experience with special piggies, I thought drinking indicated diabetics have you been to a vet that specialisers in guinea pigs, I'll see if there's any around to help you@Wiebke

Hi and welcome!

It sounds like your guinea pig could have a severe and advanced case of mange mites if he is as bad as having seizures. You need to be very careful about handling him to prevent any more seizures, which affect his heart, and also from triggering himself by scratching and biting the inflamed, painful skin. Ideally he should have ivermectin injections instead of topical treatment.

Please have him seen by a competent vet asap! Do NOT treat with low dosed pet shop products; they are too weak to heal him and will only prolong his suffering. You will also have to do several rounds of treatment at the stipulated interval, not just one - at least 3-4 round or even more, depending on how bad it is. Make sure that you clear that point with your vet. You will also have to treat his companion and any other guinea pigs that have been in contact/next to him for mange mites.
