Morning All,

Woke up this morning to find little spots of blood on the fleece, where my girls normal wee. :...

Trying to work out which one it is is hard. They are both happy and eating and i don't hear any noises when they wee. I checked the both over this morning to see if it could have been any thing else. but there was nothing obvious.

They do seem to do large wee's. When they have floor time I put some news paper on the kitchen floor and with in 15-20 mins the paper is soaking.

Could this be the start of a UTI or Stones? :{
 
Hi EmJ welcome to the family :)

My sister-in-law had this problem with one of her boys a few weeks ago and the vet said to keep an eye on him make sure he was drinking plenty etc then he went on to Cranberry Juice part with water via a syringe s that she knew how much liquid he was taking on.

Unfortunately I have not seen her to see how he is doing but I presume everything is fine :)

Will keep an eye on the over the weekend and buy some cranburry juice tonight. Hopefully this will help them.:)

Is there any thing else I could give them to try and help?
 
Hi :) I know it is difficult but please do try and not worry just yet. If you are unsure which piggy is the culprit, you could separate them with some sort of barrier at floor time (that's what I did).

The best cranberry juice to buy is the Ocean Spay variety. The light version.

You could always syringe your pig(s) some extra water to help flush the bladder out.

I would leave it a few days and see how you go as it could just be a one off. If things do not improve or get worse, then of course you should seek a vets advise.

Sorry to hear that you came across some spotting in their urine. Hope you find out which one it is, or even better, hopefully it will stop. I will keep an eye on this thread in view of my Daisy not long having had a stone in her bladder removed. Always useful tips and advice on here. :)

Aww, your welcome. I am one of the world's biggest worriers. In fact, I worry for Wales LOL. ;) Seriously, I know what it's like. My hubby or son don't worry hardly ever, and I seem to be taken on the worry of little Daisy being poorly, all on my own. I know they're concerned and do help out, but if only they knew the worrying thoughts I have reeling around in my head, they'd worry too. ;) I worry too much though. Like you say, we can't help it, these little creatures rely on us, and we want to be here for them.

Hi them

You can always put a piggy singly on some white paper or towel for a certain amount of time (at least half an hour) in order to check the urine.

However, even with UTI/cystitis, not every pee contains blood, so it can be a bit puzzling. Keep a nose out for extra smelly pee, which is another sign of urinary tract infection and get hold of some unsweetened cranberry juice (Ocean Wave light is the one that is most widely and easily available in bigger supermarkets) to have it at hand.

If you are syringing cranberry juice pure or mixed with water, you have to be aware that it can discolour the pee and make it look like there is some blood in the urine. In case of UTI, you can syringe up to 50ml in a day or as much as a piggy will drink in several servings (usually never more than 10ml, which is about a bladder full). Cranberries are good for preventing bacteria sticking to the bladder wall and drinking a lot helps flushing the bacteria out of the system. Please change your bedding often with UTI.

Sorry to hear that you think all is not well with your girls.

You've had great advice and I'd also recommend keeping a close eye on them. I've had to do this myself and found puppy pads very useful in monitoring wees, if you have them, although a white towel or kitchen roll would also work fine.

As Wiebke pointed out, urine can sometimes look like it contains blood even when it doesn't, sometimes due to certain foods discolouring it but sometimes simply because piggy wee can vary in colour alot anyway, and fairly dark wees can sometimes be completely normal. My piggy has done lots of wees which looked like they were very watered down blood but, when tested, they didn't actually contain any blood at all.

Keep a close eye but if what you're seeing looks quite a bright red colour or more like spots/blobs of fresh undiluted blood then I'd personally go to the Vet sooner rather than later.

Got home at lunch, looked in on Flash & Nibbles and there were some bright red blobs in the cage. :0

So I took them out to give them floor time, seperate them for 20 min or so, but within minuets it was clear that it was poor flash who has the problem. I had to go in to town for other things so I called into the vets, because of the red blobs and what missy said.

They are both booked in tomorrow morning at 9.30.

Thought it was better to get them both checked out. :...

If your vet says that it is cystitis/URI (which is the most likely cause at this time of the year), please ask for pediatric septrin as antibiotic (0.5 ml twice daily for adult guinea pigs). It is the best for that particular illness. Make sure that you get a probiotic with any antibiotic to buffer the guts and keep the appetite going. Ask for painkiller.

I hope I didn't scare you at all. I'm certainly no expert but it's always good to seek Veterinary advice. Some might disagree but I personally think it's definitely worth getting them checked over. You were obviously worried (understandably!) so hopefully you'll feel better after your appointment. Fingers crossed they'll both be fine x

Just thought it was for the best. As you say i am no expert/vet either.

Better to be on the safe side and get any problems sorted now than leave it and let it turn into somthing more serious.

This forum is great, you can talk to others who undersatnd ( The hubby thinks I mad and spoil my girls) and get some good advise/tips.

I hope all goes well tomorrow at the vets, the advice you've been given is very good. One of the best regimes for this sort of problem is a thorough medical examination, then if no obvious sign of stones then go straight onto fluids, antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. If no improvement at all within 7 days, or if the pig gets worse, then request an x-ray to check for stones and treatment would follow accordingly.

It would be ideal if you can persuade the vet to prescribe Septrin instead of Baytril as the antibiotic, as Septrin is widely seen as being the best one for urinary tract infections.
 
Was a vets this morning. Took both of the in for a check up.

Nibbles has been given a clean bill of health :), and a for poor little Flash the vet said it was cystitis and she is now on antibiotics for a week.:(

Trying to get her to take them this morning was a nightmare. Kept telling her it's for the best but don't think she belives me.:rose
 
Aww EmJ, so to hear it is Cystitis, poor little mite. At least it is nothing more serious than that, even though Cystitis is a horrid yucky thing. Hope Flash co operate for you now with the AB's, they will soon start to make her better. Thinking of you. XX

I have no advice, I've never dealt with any piggy illness (I guess I will one day, I plan on being a piggy owner forever) but I can offer you love and best wishes from me, Poco and Figgy.
