Guys, how can you talk about showing and slag it off one minute then turn round and say 'This forum is against breeding, showing etc ', thats not fair, is it?

Just because its a pro rescue forum I don't believe its anti breeder (if it is it doesn't represent my views, ), and people are starting to post as if it is- they may be anti though :) There are people here that are simply pro good guinea-care be it with a breeder/rescuer or pet home but they don't shout it from the rooftops.

Some very interesting comments...

Sokel: I was considering closing my doors temporarily while the Chlamydia is sorted out but then figured it could all get sorted then you admit a carrier who shows no signs, its always the carriers LOL! So my doors are open, how could I refuse Mr Melt in his condition (from a PET owner not that its important!) who had received no madical treatment, even home treatments. My doors are now closed though because I'm full :)

I do think we should all be aware of this, it could easily get into rescue guins (hate this grouping, they're all guineas!) and share the info like David said at the start, but not jump down each others throats if someone gets it a bit wrong. This is about health not showing, not who the owners are (breeders, rescuers, pet owners), if this gets into a rescue will they be slated because they move pigs around/keep lots (sometimes too many)? Does it matter? Do I care?!

Sorry but have just got back from work and the children don't squabble like this!

I can fully sympathise with you Karen. Its the squabbling that made me leave some other forums, so please dont start it here folks.

My doors have always been open to rescues and always will be.

Thanks Vicky, its just silly. I think everyones doors are open to rescues who can do so. Whatever 'hat' they wear! :)

All this arguing is totally unnecessary and I am discusted at some of the comments about breeders etc. ALL the ones I have met love each and everyone of their piggies as we ALL do :) PLEASE think before you type no one has done anything to harm piggies that was a spitefull person spreading gossip that was untrue. I am not against show breeders in the fancy but cannot abide backyard breeders.

I'm far from anti-showing but I don't mention it here O0 I don't agree with you Maryh as there is a BIG difference between show/breeding and commerical breeding but I can't get into that here so yes :-\

SAME HERE ;)

You have to bear in mind that for every "good" breeder out there who loves their pigs and would do anything for them, there's another 10 who don't give a damn. I've known people who cared and bred but when I visited them it was apparent they were utterly clueless and keeping their pigs in squalor. I was also amused by the backyard breeder who told me, and I quote, that she "wasn't a backyard breeder, she bred them in her back garden". Most of these people are under the age of 20, too, makes me wonder why the adults they live with allow it to happen?

I'm not going to get into my opinion regarding so-called "show" breeding here either, apparently it would be beaten down in flames here.

Anyway, since this topic is with reference to chlamydia and not our opinions on breeders I would just like to add that it would be nice to see some sort of reliable statement with regards to what the status is. Have there been any CONFIRMED cases of CP in guinea pigs? The one that causes psittacosis in humans, that is, not the renamed cavy strain of the bacterium.

I wish I had the answer to that question, as I'm sure everyone with pigs would. The fact is without spending an absolute fortune on testing we're never going to find out. The 2 strains are so close you need DNA testing to tell them apart, apparently.

So my advice would be if you're not sure get a pig tested by your vet, and then either purchase the medication from the internet (with a perscription obtained from your vet) or buy the medication from your vet and treat it as normal. Either way you will need to re-test the pig after it's completed it treatment.

I am not a breeder or a shower, but I am shocked at how people are using the chlamydia scare in an anti breeder way.

I have just read this thread for the first time and am UTTERLY shocked & disappointed.
And since when has this forum been against neutering :o ?
But back to the subject.
I regularly visit the forums on the 'other side of the fence'. I think that a very high percentage of the so called 'evil' breeders have taken very positive measures to prevent this horrible thing entering their sheds. I don't think that being over cautious is a bad thing such has been suggested here. I indeed think that knowledge is power and I would be devistated if something like this happened to enter my household.

MaryH could I politely ask you to send me a PM to say where you heard such slander please. It will go no further. I know exactly the person who you were referring to. And I would like to assist her is stopping such slander spreading any further.

Well said, Hilary I think sometimes we forget that people have feelings as well as the pigs. I also must admit to be very confused about the anti neutering going on at the moment, I thought that was the best thing for the majority of boars, so they don't have to live on their own any more.

Chaps this is getting a bit silly and out of hand. The topic is supposed to be addressing CP and our worries as piggy owners - all of us, whether we own one pig or a whole shed load.

Please please can we stick to the topic, this is such a friendly place to visit it would be a huge shame if things get so out of hand that people become afraid to voice their views, or worse still, scared to ask advice.

Let's get back on track, after all CP is potentially a very nasty disease and if we can all take measures to protect our herds by sharing our views that has got to be a good thing O0

Its a worrying time at the moment for all piggy people, if you breed, show or rescue just because we do different things with our piggies we all have one common link GUINEA PIGS!
I will admit I show, breed and rescue Guineas, people always ask how can I do all 3. Actually I do not promote I rescue but if someone come into my place of work(pet feeds) and told me they didnt want a Guinea Pig anymore I would be the first person offering it a home and going from there, I have took in around 10 Guineas and 3 of them have been rehomed the rest stayed with me.

Anyhow, enough about anti this and that, I too am worried about the current situation and I wish there was an easy answer or cure.

I came on here to read about exactly whats happening and how many cases there have been confirmed, to see the facts to decide for myself whether me and my rescue should be worried, and to see what I can do to try and prevent. Thats it....

Why does it matter what your views are on breeding, showing or neutering? Its not relevant at all!

We all keep piggies, we all love piggies, and this is something that could potentially affect any of us, people need to keep that in mind!

There are probably many more bad pet guinea owners than breeders, or people that show.

I think this thread should be open for people to talk about cases they have sadly gone through with their herd, or for people to pass on information to make sure everyone is doing the best they can to protect their piggies, not a magnet for debates and nastiness that belongs elsewhere.
