Worrying About Monday.

Ok so she is home. I will update you on the issue later when I get the chance, but for the moment I need to understand whats normal.

We have literally been home around 10 minutes, she is sat in her cuddly strawberry house with her eyes closed. I've offered her some cucumber and tomato and she hasn't eaten it although the vet said she did eat a lot whilst there.

Do I just leave her to settle? She looks terrible :(. She has had a 24hr dose of metacam via injection so I can't start giving it to her at home until tomorrow. Can I give her a heat pad?
 
Poor little love :( It's awful when they look so poorly.

Personally, I wouldn't give her a heat pad as Pebbles is more than likely still feeling the affects from the anaesthetic. If she is reluctant to move, she may become too warm being on a heat pad. Heat pads are not meant to be used for anaesthetised animals for this reason.

If you have a spare fleece, cover the cage over leaving just the front visible. Keep a close eye on her urine and poo output but beware that some poorly pigs will eat their faeces to obtain lost nutrients so keep an eye out for that also. Do you have any critical care in case you need to syringe feed? Please make sure she is drinking also and if not, you may need to syringe her some water.

For some reason, my ipad won't let me copy and paste but if you google guinea pig lynx, post operative care, there is some great advise on there for post op care.

ahh so glad to hear she is home :tu::nod:
its major surgery for her, so i guess she'll look a bit subdued for a little while :(
i would keep her quiet for the rest of the day, not too much excitement & i agree with claire w i think she may get too hot if she has a heat pad, just the fleeces should be fine, make sure she isn't in any draughts though.
i know when i have had general anaesthetics i have slept excessively for days afterwards. but it all helps recovery & the healing process during sleep. as long as she still gets enough food in & pee's & poops ok, then she will stand a good chance of making a full recovery :yahoo:

Good to hear Pebbles is home. She will have had syringe feed at the vets plus have eaten some solids before they let her home, but poor girl has had a major op and may just need some time and tlc to recover. Perhaps offer her some tempting morsels in bite sized pieces to get her going again. Hugs to you.

Sorry about the crazy size of the photo! For some reason it won't allow me to make it smaller. As you can see she is feeling a bit sorry for herself. So back to what has been wrong - The vet found a mass on her uterus which was obviously at the route of the problem. Now obviously a mass isn't good news and it's possible that it was cancer, but luckily all of it was removed so we need to keep an eye out for further symptoms. We have the option to send the mass away for tests if need be. My poor girl, she has a post op check on Thursday and then another one a week later. Thank you for all of your get well wishes and advice x
 
My Noodles had a lump in the uterus as well as two ovarian cysts - everything was whipped out and nearly a year later she is still bouncing around - she will be 5 in december and so will her sister who has also been spayed - she will be feeling sorry for herself and very quite for a day or two,thats normal.xx
 
Little update on Pebbles - she's ventured out today and ate hay, pellets and grass :) her large metacam dosage has really improved her and her wound is healing nicely. I am concerned about a couple of things though.

1. - seeing as Pringles basically had the hutch to herself yesterday whilst Pebbles was sleeping and resting, she is becoming very bossy now Pebbles has found her feet again. She keeps going up to her, chattering her teeth and nipping her for no reason, this makes Pebbles very upset and makes her squeal. Not because of pain, but she is obviously still not feeling well and is worried that she's going to get hurt. Is there anything I can do? I definitely don't want to split them up, because she isn't continously being aggressive and biting her.

2 - The vet who greeted us when we picked Pebbles up from the vet yesterday, told us that disolvable stitches were used. When we got home and I checked the wound, it was obvious that they're regular stitches.. blue thread. The stitching is very neat, but I'm worried about the removal of them, how does it work? Will it hurt her? She is feeling very vulnerable at the moment and I don't want her to be in more pain, as it's being controlled by the Metacam ATM.

Advice appreciated!
 
I had awful problems with one of mine post op as the boss pig rejected her completely & I had to re-bond them after she had recovered. Can you section part of their cage off so they can see each other but not touch? My piggie's stitches were dissolveable & were purple, I would think yours are the same or the vet would book you an appointment for removal.

Unfortunately not, their cage isn't really the right design to be sectioned off :(. She stayed with Pebbles at the vet so I would if thought they still had their bond. As I said, she isn't continously doing it, they're just staying away from each other mainly, but every so often Pringles goes and winds her up.

What do dissolvable stitches look like? This stitching actually looks like thread.
 
Sorry I don't have a very close up pic, but they were purpley stitches, little bits poking up, like stiff cotton. They took a couple of weeks before they went, the stitches inside the wound are the dissolvable ones, the outside bits just grow out :)
 
It is great she is home and seems to be doing well. She is a really beautiful girl. I hope she heals soon.
 
Thank you very much. I cleaned them out again today (I am keeping the hutch as clean as possible) and when I put them back in, Pebbles was like a complete different piggie! She was running around, jumping in and out if the litter tray, eating hay and nuggets, drinking loads, climbing up at the mesh and the bickering seems to have settled aswell. Before I cleaned them out she mainly stayed in the bedroom area all day. Maybe it's because I changed the furniture around :).

Her wound is very neat and healing nicely and she is loving the Metacam. I feel bad for not continuing with the syringe feeding of water - but someone who I was friends with on Facebook told me to 'stop interfering and leave her to rest' :( , I hadn't bothered her other than to check the wound and to give her the water. She was very rude, and then went onto using abusive language and trying to tell me that castrating and spaying are the same risks.

Anyway, Pebbles 1st post-op check is tomorrow at 4pm which is good, I still need to book another appointment for Pringles next HCG injection too, as the vet didn't phone me back to dicuss a date. Unfortunately Porche is still squeaking when weeing but seemingly not as bad which is good. It has only been the third day, though and there is 2-3 weeks worth in the bottle, at least. So hopefully the cerenia just needs more time to work. When she first started weeing she made no sound, it's when she is nearly finished that it starts to bother her. She isn't squeaking when pooping which is great though as she has done in the past.

Sorry for such a long reply, I just thought I would update you all on their progress and I will do the same tomorrow after the vets :)

After each one of mine has had an op they are generally very quiet for a couple of hours afterwards & not keen on eating for themselves so I syringe feed after ops for about 3 days mainly to help keep their guts moving along nicely :) I feed in the night too for the first night & maybe the second one afterwards.

Thank you! I got prepared to syringe feed her but she is now tucking into hay like never before haha. Bless her. She was very quite on Monday (the day of the op) but is much better now.
 
The HCG jabs are normally 2 weeks apart if that helps :) Best of luck for tomorrow, sounds like she is on the mend now :)
 
So we have recently returned from Pebbles 1st post-op check, and recieved a bit of a shock! The vet nurse was checking the computer, and said that Pebbles had 2 Ovarian Cysts removed aswell as the uterine mass (which I knew about) - I had no idea that she had ovarian cysts and was never told when we went to pick her up after the op. I'm so glad she's been spayed now and those nasty things are out of her.

Otherwise the vet was very impressed with her recovery, she did have to snip a bit of her stitching off though that had come loose. When she put her back in the carrier she started eating grass haha. For a 3 year old and 7 month guinea-pig with all of those issues she is very lucky. So proud of my brave girl.

She has her 2nd post-op check on the 19th on Saturday morning, and Pringles will be having her second HCG injection then aswell.

Awww they are gorgeous! Great news she is doing so well, just keep an eye on the wound to see it is clean, not bleeding or looking nasty at all as it is on her tummy she might lie in all sorts of lovely stuff lol :)

Knew they would be o.k - my Noodles had 2 cysts and a mass in the uterus too - she is nearly 5 and bouncing around!
 
Oh wow she had cysts too. Thank goodness they are well and home with you.
 
Is anyone online? Rather worried. Just done Pebbles daily wound check (I check it twice a day, it's 1:05am as I type this) and I found a small lump on the lower right hand side. What could this be? I've touched it and it doesn't seem to be bothering her.. I hope it's nothing serious:(
 
Panic over (a bit).. just spoken to a vet nurse and she said it's probably just seroma (fluid filled swelling) or sometimes you can feel internal stitches poking out. Will just keep a close eye on it now x
