Hey i have lots of old teddies ones i have won from grab machines and i was wondring do guinea pigs nibble teddies i know some people put them in with there guinea pigs but my guinea pigs chew anything they can find newspaper ect... lol

?

it depends on the pig,if yours are chewers then they will probably chew a teddy too,

P.S this is the H&I section so this thread would be better suited to "guinea pig chat" or "behaviour" xx

Some of mine like to nibble their teddies with their teeth, but they've not eaten anything or damaged a teddy through this. However, if the pig is resolutely chewing the teddy or damages one, then it's better not to allow them a teddy.

I find that the soft toys aimed at dogs are usually good, but most of my pigs teddies are just normal soft toys!

Now that we need to see!

Rolfy on the right, just before the nibbling started, and Harris in the background, making a break for it..caught in the act.

Just give them cardboard to chew, it is only humans who recognise teddy bears, the pigs just want to chew. The owners are the ones who looking for company!

All 12 of my own pigs, even the ones that don't chew them at all, like to snuggle up to soft toys. Some guineas do ignore teddies or are only interested in chewing them, but many appreciate them, cuddling up to and playing with them.

They are good "company" for some lone pigs, of course they know it's not another pig and they don't recognise teddies, but the fact that something else is there does comfort many. It is surprising just how some pigs take to their soft toys, like Kira's Joanna.

They say that pets take after their owners...............................

My Joanna found great comfort in her toy, Laura-duck, she was very abused and came to me a broken shell of a guinea pig. She probably bonded with Laura-duck so well as she saw it as the only thing that wouldn't cause her any pain, either way it is gorgeous to see how much joy that Laura-duck has brought to Joanna is simply over whelming.

ANYWAY getting back on track and away from some of the unnecessary snide comments, some guinea pigs will chew Teddy's, some wont.

The best thing you can do runt18 is to pop a teddy in and to see how your pigs react to it. If you see them basically just ripping it apart remove it and I personally wouldn't try again, but if they just cuddle with it and maybe give it the occasional nibble then it's nothing to worry about :)

my guinea pigs chew absolutly anything and everything apart from their teddy, they nibbled it a few times when i first put it in but now they are used to it they dont bother

Have any of the pigs that chew their furry friends had any problems as a result of swallowing the fabric?

I do have some that nibble their teddies, but nibbling and playing with the teddy is different to the resolute chewing that some pigs are prone to. All "chewable" features are removed - e.g. fake "hair", labels, ribbons etc. - and the pig watched closely before being allowed to keep the toy.

I would not give a teddy to a pig that tries to eat it. Similarly I would not bed a pig on fleece/Vetbed and towels that I knew had a taste for fabric.

I have more concerns about the pigs that eat each others hair (and not just a bit of it) than those that live with teddies. (Unless, as stated, the pig is known to chew toys.)

Thank you everyone for your comments, i will try and teddy tommorrow were should it go as they are in a hutch. There bed part?
