ive had the idea of putting a whole bale of hay in the gp's runs, so they can eat at their leisure, tunnel in it/climb in it etc....

do you think they will overdose on hay or just eat as much as they need? thought it would be fun for them to play in too but am not sure....

Nope, all sources say piggies are supposed to have unlimited hay, which I interpret as more hay than they can eat :)

I bet they would LOVE a hay playground :)) It would get soiled pretty soon though. The hay wouldn't go to waste, they would have had fun with it, but they won't be able to eat on it for the time a bale of hay usually lasts.

I love spoiling mine with hay. If I had a compost I would love to keep mine on shavings and LOTS of hay

They'd love that! It sounds like a great idea.

The only thing is they'd pee in it probably.

I love in the winter when I give the guinea pigs huge piles of hay and they burrow into it and run around and they're so happy :)

superb! i got a delivery of 260kg of hay and straw so I'm sure i wont miss a few small bales of hay for them to play in.......itssssssssssss playtime!

You have SO got to post pictures of this if you go ahead. They will absolutely adore it. Just beware, you may never see some of your piggies again, once they've tunnelled their way in they won't want to come out......

Good point on the pigs peeing in the hay though.

well i tried a 'light sprinkling' of hay on the peruvians...and they went crazy, so tomorrow I'm gonna try a half bale...hee hee
pic in the stories/photo section :)

My piggies are outdoors now and in the shed which has a ramp out onto the grass they have large cardboard boxes with newspaper in the bottom and then filled to the top with meadow hay. They absolutely love to dive into their boxes and nibble and tunnel and chew. The newspaper and hay is changed every morning so it is always clean.I have ten boxes 5 down each side of the shed which is 8ft x10ft. I get the meadow hay from my local farm shop it comes in bags a bit bigger than a pillowcase it takes 1 1/2 bags to fill the boxes but I have never known them to "overdose " on hay.

That honestly sounds like absolute piggy heaven! I'm not telling my girls about it or they'd be packed and ready to visit in seconds!

I am also loving giving my pigs HUGE amount of tunnelling hay.

Not a bale though! Can't wait to see the photos

I suspect all we will see is piles of hay and not a guinea in site - they will all be INSIDE the hay! :))
