Hello, feel a bit cheeky posting after such a long time, but have been so busy, only seem to get time to come on and read lately!
Incase you don't remember Georgie is 7 1\2 now and lately has been suffering with cystitus (sp) she's had baytril ,cleared up then back again so the vet has done the spinny thing with her sample and I've got a horrible feeling she may have stones, which I know is operable, my worry is would she make it through the operation being such a grand old age, also I'm getting worse in my old age at being a panic merchant where she's concerned, I know I am jumping the gun a bit but was curious if anyone has experience of operations on OAP's
love sammy xx

Hiya Sammy :)p

wow she is a grand old age! I have no experience of this but if she has an xray, this should show up stones if there are any? septrin is usually the better antibiotic for bladder problems.

I am sure someone more experienced will be on soon.

Hope you and the family are all well x

Hi Fiona, thanks ! I think x rays are next, my vet won't give septrin......blah blah blah, usual reasons ! sounds silly but it's the way she looks at me...I cry *** I know what she's thinking....anyway we are all fine, how about your handsome lot ?

i am so sorry to hear this i have no experiance but you never know do you with old age you always think the worse and it is a grand age . i am wrong one to answer really i never look on the bright side . hope things work out

Its always a difficult one deciding whether to put a piggy through surgery. Wait and see what the x-ray says and you can make a dicision then.

They are all fine Sammy! we are all exhausted and can't wait for school to break up :))

Hi Sammy, you freak me out you do! :(|) I was thinking of you today and wondering how you were then you go and post! Hope you are all well, don't be a stranger misses! x

Not sure about the op, personally I feel it is getting on a bit. Hope you can find some info on it from those who have been through it.

Well hi there girl xx>>>xx>>>
awwwwwww sorry to hear about Georgie whee all sending healing wheeeeeeeeeeks and lots of kisses from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Sorry no experience of this, i'm hoping someone else can help you :{

i have no experience but if you can keep her pain free i would leave the stones just because of her age,it might not be worth putting her through an op first because of the risk and second because of her age she may be ok to live with a stone until she passes naturally,I'm no expert though just my opinion,i hope she is ok xxxxx

I have just been down to give the girls breakfast and managed to get her to have a nice big drink of cranberry, which I think she is getting a real taste for, I do agree I think she is getting on a bit for an op and apart from the wee problem she is happy as larry, still eating vast amounts and wheeking away, she doesn't seem to have any pain when she wees (she doesn't cry and isn't hunched up at all) Maybe we'll just have to wait and see what the vet says! Georgie sends you all big piggy kisses and a big cuddles for thinking of her, and a special one she blew all the way to Oz for Glynis.....did you get it ?
Only another week at school then I can sit on here for the next six weeks and do some serious catching up:)), so many new peeps to meet !
love sammy xx

The oldest pig I have had operated on is Captain Jack, he's 5-6 and had a huge lump. My own vet wanted to put him to sleep but I took him to Vedra at Cambridge Cavy Trust and she operated on him. It was the size of a satsuma. That was 6 months or more ago now and although he's still with us, he certainly would have died as the lump was underneath him and bleeding and would have got infected, so I didn't have many options - operate or put to sleep. He's a fighter and my favourite so I gave him a chance!

With your girl, if she's still eating and happy and not in pain I'd probably think it best to leave her, that's a really good age. But wait and see what the results come back as, and go from there. Hope she's ok

Glad she is doing ok Sammy. Yey look forward to a catch up when you have time! x

My Mimsi has a bladder stone. It was recently picked up during an x-ray but the GP specialist I saw said that the stone has probably been there for years. The stone is embedded in the bladder wall, and as Mimsi (who is nearly 5) has no other symptoms apart from occasional blood in urine, then I made the decision not to have him operated on. As the stone is deeply embedded it would involve intricate surgery and I didnt want to put him through the risk of anaesthetic when he has been living with this for years. Mimsis case is quite unique as the stone is growing within the bladder wall and is fairly small. It doesnt sound as though the stone is bothering your piggy so that may help you with your decision. Good luck..

My Minx made it though two bladder ops, but sadly died from the remaining infection in her badly abused bladder which we just couldn't get on top of! She was 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years old when she had the ops.

Make sure you get some meloxidyl (preferably for cats) for pain relief from your vet and have it at home when you feel she's in pain. 0.2 ml is about right for guinea pig around a kilo.

You can order pediatric septrin at the pharmacy, if necessary. The right dose is 0.5 ml twice daily. It's going down so much better than baytril, as it has a banana flavour to make babies swallow it. My Nerys is being treated with it for cystitis at the moment and loves it so much, she's even licking the syringe while sitting comfy on my lap and no struggle!

All the best to your gand old lady!

Thanks for that ! do I need a prescription to order septrin from the chemist ?
