I've posted about finding a piggy sow for my Peppa - well I would like to get her quite soon so I can have them living close to each other.

There appears to be a sow drought as there appear to be none around in my area - apart from P@H.

Is it okay to go there, as they do have the adoption side as well as their selling side?

I really don't want to go to a pet shop.

Thanks

Personally, I'd be a little wary of Pets At Home in particular.

There used to be a huge one near where I used to live. One of my friends bought a pair of 'male' guinea pigs from there... and woke up one morning with three guinea pigs instead of two!

I mentioned it in passing to my vet at the time (the surgery was right near the Pets at Home store) and she told me that she wasn't surprised at all. She said she often got pregnant mis-sexed pigs brought in from there, and had treated many pigs from there who were rife with URIs and mites, brought home by unsuspecting owners.

I don't know if all Pets at Home stores are as unprofessional and careless as that one, though. That one might just be a one-off, just remember that guinea pigs are very good at hiding their illnesses for quite a while.

I refrain from using Petshops altho Toby was bought at a very reputable one. Heidi was also petshop bought there are no guinea pig shelters near me which absoloutly sucks! But Pets at Home are so unbeliveably dodgy Check the piggy over ask can you hold it and just check it out

I brought two guinea pigs from P&H and their both doing fine so far i had them nearly two years now ...and yea they have a adoption area but some P&H dont alway have pigs in adoption bit ..

It's the luck of the draw. I got Twinkle from Pets at Home he is a healthy pig (touchwood) and has never caused me problems. Pudsey came from there too and just like Twinkle is fine up to now. They are both over 1.

Cuzzy on the other hand came to me from Pets at Home with mites, he died aged 5/6 months. He always seemed a sickly pig.

My first port of call is rescue. But I'm so pleased I have my 2 boys from Pets at Home I wouldn't be without them. :)

I adopted Ginger from Pets at home when he was around 6 months old. He's about 21 months now.:) I would probably try and get a younger piggy if you want to try and bond it with Peppa, think it has more chance of working out than two more mature ones.:)

Success!! Avon Small Animal Rescue have some sows. I'm going over the weekend Peppa has his stitches out to have a look at them and hopefully bring one home x)

That's great!:) Good luck and hope you find the piggy you are looking for.:)

Didn't think I had to get a younger one if it was a sow, only boars, or do I need to get a young sow? If so, what age am I looking for. Peppa's just over 2 years old.

i adopted maisy and martha fro p@h this july dident go in there to get piggies but saw them asked to hold one stroked her and noticed she had lice told the assistant who grimised and raised her shoulders couldent leave them there after that i only made a donation of £5 as i pointed out i would have to treat them signed a piece of paper and brought them home i was asked no questions or given any advice wrote a letter to head office got a letter back saying the adoption should not have gone ahead with them having lice as if i was going to leave them there maisy and martha are both beautifull friendly piggies i am glad i brought them home

I must admit, this is part of the reason I wanted to get one from P@H - as they do not home-check and don't care who the poor little mites go to, whereas a rescue often home-checks, gets you to sign a contract, etc.

They do so much to help rescues, especially dog ones, you would think they would be a better organisation. I might go and investigate the two in Bristol over the weekend and ask lots of questions.

good luck, keep us updated and we want piccies :))

I seem to have had different experiences of PaH myself. I did 'rescue' a pig from there a year ago, who had ringworm, lice and conjunctivitis, but I also have some other guinea pigs from there who are fabulous and healthy little things. They seem to have got themselves together in the past six months. Mine has stopped keeping guineas with rabbits and all the animals look healthy and well cared for, with tunnels and hidey holes so they're not constantly on display to the public.

Harry and Dude were from the rehoming centre at our local P@H and they are both fine. They had a check up at the vets the other day and they are both healty and very happy little pigs. We've just found some lice on them, but that is from the hay we believe (which is from P@H)

I got my 2 girls from P@H and they have been perfectly fine. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and gave me all the correct advice. My local P@H is brilliant and I have never came across any problems with any of the animals in there or their staff.

I never have a problem with my local Pets at Home either.
Some of the younger staff seem pretty unknowledgable but they are usually put on tills.

I do love a mooch at the animals in there but don't really like buying from pets at home.

i picked up a male one from there for my mum and it turned out to be a female one lol

I got my Eliza from P@H. We adopted Connie from a lady who's kids had got board of her. She had originally had a cage mate but he died a few weeks before she came to us. I decided to get Connie a friend so she wouldn't be lonely so off I went to P@H (This was before I joined this forum). There was a shortage of females and they only had Eliza left. I'm pleased that I got her because I noticed straight away that she was bigger than the boys in the next enclosure and had pink eyes. I truly believe that she was unwanted and would have ended up in the adoption section as she would have been too big to sell as a baby. Its all worked out fine and she is now a cheeky little character and Connie's best friend. I kept going in afterwards and noticed that it was a good 2 months before they had anymore sows so I'm glad I got her when I did. x

We got our three sows from P@H in Wokingham - I have to say that the same guy in particular helped us with each purchase, gave them a thorough examination and explained everything in much detail. It's intriguing as we already had some boars and so know a reasonable amount about how to care for guineas. All the advice given was spot on and very friendly. Proper sexing too! Obviously the standard varies across the range of stores, but they've always been very professional, and always seemed interested in making sure that people know what they're getting into when they buy a piggie.
