Wouldn't it be nice if we could get through one month without a trip to the vets?

Poor Yoshi, he's not feeling well. I've booked him an appt to see Vicki this afternoon. He seems to have a runny tummy but on closer inspection it appears that it is in fact his caecotrophs which are runny, his poos are very dry. He's also started dribbling. :(
I'm wondering if his thyroid dose is too high ( even though he's on the lowest dose - quite literally a drop ) and it's sent him over active. If his metabolism has speeded up do you think this would affect things like tooth growth ( thinking about the dribbling ). I know it would affect his digestion so the first process would be speeded up, which may explain the runny caecotrophs - maybe leaving not much moisture for the second digestion, hence the dry poos. I don't know, I'm just clutching at straws trying to figure out what's up with the poor boy now. I will mention my thoughts to Vicki.

Has anyone else got a piggle on thyroid meds who's had similar symptons?

Andrea x

aww poor Yoshi, little man you need to stop worrying your mummy so much, she just wants you to be happy and comfortable :( Hope you get some information from the vet

I am sorry; no information here.

Hopefully, you can get to the bottom of it.

And yes, I am VERY well known at my local vets... I don't even have to say my name on the phone depending on the receptionist! mallethead

Wiebke, I'm beginning to wonder if we should move next door to the vets, we seem to spend so much time there lately!

HUGS

I know the feeling! Once you have a major health problem, others crop up in the lee of it...

Yes, I know what you mean. Poor little furries.
He seems to have perked up this afternoon and everything seems to be drying out ( both ends).
But then that's typical isn't it? With children and pets, no matter how poorly they are at home when you get them to their Dr's/vet's appt. they seem right as rain! mallethead
Anyway, we'll see what Vicki says and I'll keep you updated.

x

The house next door to our vets is up for sale and we were tempted as we spend so much time there

Hope everything is goes well with your boy.

Oh boy. He's going in next Friday for his exploratory, we can't put it off any longer. He's going to have a weeks break from his thyroid meds because he's losing weight a bit too fast.
Vicki couldn't see anything obviously wrong with his teeth but thinks if he's dribbling and not eating his caecotrophs ( he is leaving rather a lot of them lying around) then there is the possibility of spurs so will check properly when he's under G.A for his main investigation.
This was primarily to investigate the lump under his chin because the aspirate she originally took didn't show anything in the labs but she'll also check his under arm lump if he's doing okay with the G.A because it's recently changed texture and shape ( it's always been thought to be a fatty lump - by 3 different vets btw but now it's acting oddly ). She will probably take a blood sample for another lot of labs too. 8:) And breathe!
Just hoping he gets through it okay, hopefully he will now that he's a bit trimmer. She's also prescribed some Septrin for him in case he looks like he needs it over the weekend but meanwhile she wants me to give him a few regular doses of critical care as he doesn't seem to be eating an awful lot. :(
Oh I hope it all gets resolved in a positive way next week and we can get Yoshi back on track.
The vet fund needs a serious infusion! @)

I am sorry, but hope that Yoshi is going to be OK!

Aw good luck for next week, poor Yoshi :(

I've just spent the best part of last weeks wages on Daisy's op on Tuesday so I know the feeling :)

Thanks guys, let's hope Vicki can get to the bottom of all of his ailments, poor boy, I'm sure he's completely sick of vet's visits ( and Moonpig the missus who accompanies him because he has a total meltdown without her!).

update bump

An update:
More waiting and seeing.
Vicki isn't in until Friday so we saw a different vet today. He doesn't think Wally's eye can be saved and will need to come out.
There's not many vets in this week and as he's on antibiotics he should be fine until Friday apparently when Vicki's back and can operate. I'm still holding out a tiny hope that his eye could get better after seeing a load of pictures on Guinea Lynx about a guinea pig who had a ruptured eye, it looked hopeless like Wally's but when the scab came off it looked like it was healing. Anyway, we'll see how it's looking Friday, he's getting about fine and is eating okay now too.
He couldn't come up with any concrete diagnosis for Yoshi's current illnesses and found loads of new lumps ( that weren't there on Thursday ) so I'm not a happy Mummy. I don't think he's well enough to go through an exploratory, he's far to weak for a G.A. We've decided to see how he goes on the Septrim, Critical Care and probiotics and I managed to get him some Metacam too to make him a bit more comfortable. This seems to have helped because it's been a battle all weekend syringe feeding him ( he really isn't interested ) but after he'd had some Metacam he must have felt a bit more comfortable because he did manage to get quite a bit of Critical Care mixed with baby food ( banana & mango, he likes the flavour ) down, well, more than the last few days anyway. He snuggled up on my chest, all propped up with pillows ( seemed to ease his breathing ) and let me finger stroke his nose and cheek and dozed comfortably for a couple of hours. I'm glad he got some relief but I'm not kidding myself about where things could go.
So it's more watching, waiting and intensive caring.... and lots more positive vibes please. x

I've just taken some photos of Wallace's eye, will add them to this thread at some point today in case anyone else has had similar eye problems with their pigs.
Yoshi doesn't seem to be suffering with laboured breathing anymore ( although his usual noises when I pick him up sound raspier than usual, the vet did say he had a bit of fluid on his lungs but he couldn't hear a heart murmur) but he's still completely off his food and just wants to hide and sleep.

Sorry, been trying to keep things to one thread but realised I had seperate threads for Yoshi and Wallace whilst discussing them together so now I have completely lost track of which is the best thread to update on. :red

I am so sorry that there is no real good news for either of your boys!

Thanks, I'm still trying to be positive but it's becoming difficult. :(

Your doing everything you can for them, hope you get some positive news soon. Really hope they start to turn the corner *hugs*

Thanks, the vet said "you're doing all the right things", and I felt like crying, " then why isn't it working?!" 8...

I know how that feels, your doing everything you can but still no improvement it's so awful feeling helpless. Just keep going and hopefully they will start to improve all of a sudden - Your boys are so lucky to have you as their mummy remember that.
Sending lots of healing vibes their way. Keep us updated.

Oh dear :(

Big ((hugs)) for you! Did the vet prescribe any frusemide for Yoshi if he has fluid on his lungs that may help him considerably.

Sending lots of positive vibes for your boys x

No he didn't, he's not our regular vet and I have to be honest I was starting to get a bit cross with all of his humming and hahring. Didn't instill me with much confidence.
I was wondering what I paid £80 for, 3ml of metacam and a consult ( one of which was a follow up ). I don't think Vicki would have billed me for a double consult, I will be querying that with her. I know it sounds mean of me when my boys are poorly but I can't afford to waste any money when I need to make it go a long way for their treatments ( I don't mind paying if I have confidence in the vet ). The eye op could cost £400 or more and we already spent a hundred at the vets last week. :laluot_11:

I totally agree, having spent £200 on Daisy last week plus about £60 in petrol to get to Simon in Northampton. Still they are worth it though :)

Best of luck, I would seriously consider getting some frusemide for him though, is there another vet specialising in exotics nearby you could get him to before Friday? I don't think your regular vet would mind in the circumstances.

I'll phone ours up and see if they'll prescribe some without seeing him again, the poor boy just wants to sleep. :laluot_28:
Can he take it while he's on Septrim?

I am not sure, I think you need to remind them when you ring up what he is already on, just to be certain, but it does help with fluid, which if it's building up will put pressure on his heart etc. Check with the vet, or hopefully Pebble or someone more knowledgeable will let us know shortly. It may be worth messaging Pebble on here in case she pops in later x
