My two boars had a fight last week and one of them got badly cut next to his lip. We separated them during a whole week and tried a re-introduction yesterday after cleaning the whole two cages, bathing them ect. It seemed to work fine but we have just witnessed what looked like a pre fight just now and Prince's wound has just reopened. It does not bleed but it is swollen.

Advice? I have made another disinfectant solution just now and it's waiting to cool down.

Also- am I assuming that this is the end now for them living together? Vladimir seems really lonely without Prince. What are my options?

Thanks!

To be honest, you need to monitor them very closely and see if their is any lunges, if you see that then for me, you need to separate. Have you had them as babies or adults? I'll tag in @Wiebke whose very knowledgeable in this area.

Hi! I am sorry, but I would consider it the end of the line. it is always a very gutting experience. :(

Please have a look at this guide here. It lists all your options in detail with links to rescues and vets in several countries to help you with doing your research for the best option for you.

Please keep a close eye of his lip wound. One of my boys had a very impressive split in his from a fight and the vet had us monitor it closely in case it needed surgery. Thankfully it came together and healed okay, he just has a wonky shaped lip now.

Thanks both- we've had them as babies but they're not brothers. Surprisingly Prince (who got bitten) has always be the most dominant one but he's the one who seems to walk away every time. They have always got on perfectly until this a week ago.

We'll keep an eye on his lip wound and take them to the vet if we see any sign of infection.

Please disinfect now! You can get sterile saline solution from a pharmacy or you can make it at home by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into 1/2 pint (250 ml) of boiled, cooled water.

What many people don't realise is that many deep bites are defence bites. Lunging is a very strong form of saying "stay away from me"; it is NOT aggressive behaviour. If that is disregarded, then it come to a fight.
