Hi guys,
Not sure really how to explain this but today I have been grooming my pigs, nail clipping ect ect and I noticed when i was brushing Fluffy who is a longhaired wooley mammath piggy that there was a wound on her back, it had big lumps which kind of look like scabs in it but they were black (like her skin) they were not bloody or looked like they were made of blood, and as i was brush they were coming away. Underneath these crusts was a wound that had bits of milky white stuff its not very deep but it is bad. It doesn't smell but she squeels when you touch it.
She seems okay, eating drinking running around I am taking her to the vets at 9:30 tomorrow.
I am worried she may have had flystrike or an abcess that was burst or something else that I am not aware of, I haven't seen any maggotts but what if they have been?
How can I have missed this I am so upset with myself as I have grooming her and picking her up all the time and I have just not noticed as her hair is so wild. I have shaved her whole back end now
Any ideas as I am not going to be able to stop thinking about it until I go to the vets?

Good that you have booked her in at your vets. It is difficult to decide from your description whether it is fungal, mites or a little abscess or cyst that has burst; but any of these things can be got on top of.

It is always much more difficult to spot these things with a longhair piggy; I have a few of them myself!

As I'm aware flystrike is a very serious condition and I'm pretty sure you would know for certain if your pig had contracted it - it can take hold very quickly and in a matter of hours - Flystrike does not just disappear, it's a life/death situation if contracted. looking at your description of what's wrong with your girl, it doesn't seem flystrike is the problem. My initial thought when reading your OP was since there is a milky substance underneath the scab, it sounds like an abscess/infected wound.

More information on flystrike:

Popping her along to the vets would be a good idea, they will flush/clean the wound and prescribe any associated antibiotics if necessary.

Can you take some pictures of her wound and post them here? The more experienced members may be able to offer more advice than what i can...

cheers for your replies. she is comfy at the moment so I am going to leave her alone I will take a photo for reference tomorrow and I'll let you know what the vet saidxx
