Hey guys, my guinea pig has a wound in between his shoulder blades and I’m quiet worried. The soonest vet appointment I could get is in a few days. I think it may be mites, does anyone know what to do/ what it is? He’s been itching quite a bit recently but I haven’t noticed this wound before.

(Pushing his fur slowly was very soft and he didn’t move or squeak like he was in pain)

HI! Good that you have booked him in promptly. It sounds like either mange mites or a fungal skin infection, which can be difficult to tell apart in the very early stages.

Please do not home treat on spec with any creams or low dosed shop products on spec. This is going to make a proper diagnosis extremely difficult and may keep your vet from allowing to step in with the appropriately high dosed and problem specific treatment because they have to wait until your stuff has worn out - and that means yet another vet trip.

I know that it is hard to sit by and do nothing, but right now it is the best thing you can do. :(
What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)
