so today i saw someone on another forum posting about how they were feeding their 5 year old terminally ill sow yoghurt.
after PM'ing them, politely letting them know that guinea pigs do not eat yoghurt as they're herbivores and directing them to guinealynx (which also says this), i was told that as they'd kept guinea pigs for 20 years, they didn't need to be told anything new (apparently), and that "guinea pigs can eat anything as long as you start with small pieces."
and for anyone that's worried about things that may be toxic to guinea pigs, have no fear, the only thing in the entire world they can't eat is red cabbage rolleyes
soo i've decided that when i get home tonight i'm going to start baxter on a diet of steak. if i start with a small piece, i'm sure he'll get used to it right?

some people make me so angry.

There really is no telling some people- what's the saying... "Like talking to a brick wall".. i feel sorry for the poor piggie :(

I wondered what your facebook status was all about. My girls are due for their tea soon. May be i'll give them a plate of fish and chips!
I can understand why you are annoyed. Some people just have no clue and if they are feeding their guinea pig yoghurt, I am not surprised she is poorly :(

Something similar happened to me. A friend of a friend posted a Facebook status saying they were sad because their guinea pigs had died in the cold ... even though "they had lots of straw and a rabbit to cuddle up to".
I sent her a message saying that rabbits can hurt piggies etc, and they need hay, but she replied quite rudely saying that she had been keeping guinea pigs for over 10 years and never had any problems! Oh yeah, what about those poor babies dying? :0

Some people are idiots. When I did my placement in the vets you came across soooo many idiots. There was this man with a dog that had mammary gland cancer and if she had an operation to remover the lumps and all of her mammary glands then she would be fine instead they said no its not fair. Its like surely it less fair to let her get really bad cancer end up in agony and have to be pts! Idiots.grrrr

I'm in no way agreeing with feeding yoghurt BUT I know someone who was told to feed there piggie it by their vet so it could just be a case of being told the wrong information? He was told to do this as it acts as a probiotic, I quickly gave him some of my probiotic sachets and told him they were the better option!

Although the fact she acted so aggressively when you gave advice was uncalled for, I can't understand why people get that way, I'd rather be told if I was doing something wrong personally.

she's from the netherlands, and reckons that things are different here than they are over there.
i'm still confused :S are guinea pigs different in the rest of europe?
ugh, i just hate talking to people like that because afterwards you always wish you'd said things differently. i ended up telling her that if she wants to scoff at a website widely used by the guinea pig community and the advice of a man who was well known for being very good with guinea pigs that was her choice, and that she could feed it meat if she wanted to but that guinea pigs are herbivores and that is just science, not opinion.
at least it's stopping me lurking on that forum now, i've asked to have my account deleted as i refuse to get into an arguement with her rolleyes

I know someone from Belgium who is very experienced and takes marvellous care her of her piggys. I have heard her saying before that lot of misinformation there about piggys and a lot of people who just refuse to listen to advice.

Some people just don't want to know. They only want to hear from people who agree with them.

apparently she's having the pig PTS today.

it might not have made a difference, but i wish she'd listened instead of feeding it that yoghurt.

I think this is yet another never say never thing... I know that "my" rescue had an underweight boar that just wouldn't gain weight, so the rescue lady sent her son off to get some infants porridge (one that is sometimes used for piggies here). He (the piggy :)))started to gain beautifully and she didn't really look at the package until a week or so later and realised it was the wrong kind, one that had milk in it! And yet it saved his life.

I've noticed that the guinea pig world is very quick to say "that's poisonous and will kill your piggy!" Well, mine have cabbage almost every day and the don't get ill from it. They eat iceberg lettuce too, but only as a treat, and don't die from it.

To put things into perspective in Sweden it's almost considered piggy cruelty to feed your pig nuggets or any pellets/mix other than Oxbow and even then only in quantities that would make you think all our pigs were on piggy weight watchers, so all countries have their rules...

if pigs are different in other parts of world then over here in australia they eat steak evey night washed down with a beer.lol

I have heard the yoget before, I have also heard of feeding pigs seafood only and then wondering why they cant get a pig to live over the age of .

some people dont see what they are doing as wrong for thier pig as they have done it for years so they will contuine to do it

I have to say I took a piggie in with diarrioah (can never remember how to spell that word!) and gave her live yoghurt for 3 or 4 days until her poos were normal. She was fine and has since thrived. I've always used live yoghurt as a probiotic for rabbits and it works really well. I'm not excusing the rudeness of the lady, her reaction was just ignorant. I've been taking in rabbits for donkeys years and have gained loads of experience over this time but there's always new things to learn. I love hearing of things that have worked for other people and can be of benefit. You know the saying 'You're never too old to learn'. :)

^ could it have been the bacteria in the yoghurt rather than the dairy itself?

i'm not saying that dairy is directly bad for every pig, just that if they're not built to eat it it won't have any actual benefit for them if it doesn't harm them.

but yes, it was more her attitude than the dispute over the yoghurt itself.
i'm just sad that if she'd listened and maybe looked on guinealynx for some alternatives her pig might still be alive.
