Hi,
I have an eight year old male guineapig- Mali.
He is an old chap, and his back legs aren't working as well as before, and his bottom went a bit bony, but apart of that he is/was fine.

Today I noticed he is sneezing and wretching! It seems his food comes up with the wretching and than he chews it, but sometimes sneeze it out through his nose!
I have a vet appointment at 6pm.
I read about this on forums and there wasn't any happy ending.
Does anyone have any experience?
Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum.

I think it may be an upper respiratory infection or Pneumonia. I had a pig that did this and he had Pneumonia at the time. When you see the vet ask them to check for fluid on his chest and if he does have any he will need diuretics to help shift it. Please also ask for some to give at home, though you will need to give extra fluids whilst he is on them.

The vet will most likely give you antibiotics so you will need to give probiotics at least an hour after each dose.

Also Bisovlon would help clear any mucous. You can also get this from the vets.

How is his breathing? if he deteriorates between now and his appointment please ask to be seen as an emergency.

Please could you update your location on your profile as it helps us help you better.

Hi Helen,
thanks for reply!
I am in Wivelsfield Green, and going to Grove Lodge vet in Brighton at 6.
He stopped sneezing, but still wretching. The whole of his little body rocking, he looks very tired.
I think the sneeze was from the food and water came back to his mouthand tried to get rid of it.
He lost some weight, but thought it is due to his age and living with an always hungry youngster who eats up everything super fast, we were extra feeding him by hand, what he was happy to accept.
He had few bits this morning, but that seemed to make it worse.
His breathing seems normal, same as Chewy's.
Can it be tummy problem rather?

Thanks

I am at work so posting on my phone. It could be gut related but I am more inclined to think respiratory. I would call the vet and ask for an emergency appointment.

Hi Helen,
I did, and they sent me to the closest vet (Seers in Horsham), the vet thinks it is respiratory infection.
He gave me some options...
I went with to keep him in for at least overnight and they put him in a gas/air cabin and giving him antibiotics and food.
He is 8 years old, so an old chap...
and he lost quite a bit of a weight in the last couple of weeks.
I am goinf to call them in a couple of hours.
Do you think he has a chance? ;(

Sorry to read all this, he is in the best place at the vets getting the best of care by the sounds of it. Sending him lots of healing vibes and to you a virtual hug. I hope things start to turn the corner for Mali, please keep us updated.

He really is in the best place, so he has every chance as he will be monitored closely. I think that may be the same vets another member uses, in which case they are really good.
