Wrong ivermectin dosage?

I have 3 very itchy piggies. I could find no trace of anything on their fur or skin (other than Sukie, who is always a bit flakey - no flakes on the others). So I bought some Pharmaq ivermectin 0.8% spot on. The contents are 8 mg/ml of ivermectin, and the dosage is 1 drop (on the skin) per 500g, so each pig got 2 drops.

Well, they were still itchy after 2 lots of it (I did the follow up after a week), so they had a bath with some Gorgeous Guineas shampoo, but they are still itching like mad. :(

The only thing I can think of is that the ivermectin dosage is wrong, as I really don't think it is fungal. :{
 
I use this Ivermectin without any problems, maybe the hay you are using is making them scratch?

If the scratching continues I suggest a visit to the vet, as it could be the start of ringworm or another type of fungal infection.

Do they have any sore patches?
 
No, there is absolutely no sign of irritation on their skin whatsoever - just itchy pigs for the last 3 weeks or so. :{
 
How bizarre, have you changed their environment at all?
Did they live inside for the winter now outside?

Maybe try a soothing melt from GG, that can calm the irritation.

Ive only had a similar situation where a piggy was moved from outside to inside and I think the central heating made her itchy, although not for 3 weeks. :{
 
No, no changes at all, other than Holly being spayed, and she was a little itchy beforehand. I know operations can bring out a case of mites, but the other two were also itchy while they were separated, so there is no link there. They live indoors and always have.

I really think it's mites...
 
Have not found ivermectin on the skin to be very succesful as a treatment for existing mites though it seems to work as a preventative .\oral or injection seem to work best
 
I have some oral ivermectin in the drawer, but I think it's probably too old to use now. Anyone know where I would get some oral ivermectin from?

Thanks for this. I must admit to being a bit nervous about using the Ivomec Super, after all the discussions years ago about the anti fluke ingredient. :{ What is the dosage for oral use?

edit: just seen another thread on this, and that Panomec was recommended. I might try that one... Is the dosage the same? Sounds like it's the same, ie. 1% ivermectin.

Hehehe, I ordered some from a different website and it asked what breed of sheep I wanted it for! :{ Luckily my friend keeps sheep so I said 'Suffolk' !

Yep, the suppliers I get ivermectin from also thinks I'm the proud owner of a 2 year old suffolk sheep :(|):(|)
