Wyevale lone piggie

No, it was the one near Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre in Gillingham. Although Xander ( he has a name now :) ) was the only piggie there, they had quite a few rabbits as well as birds, fish, hamsters, Degus (I think) and rather oddly, Tortoises.

That place really is ridiculous. The 'manager' is so rude and arrogant, thats when he hasnt left the youngsters in charge. I too, as previously said in this thread, emailed them with links to rabbit and guinea pig care.

Btw i saw Xander in there a while ago, hes a real sweetie!

When i got Xander there were four "employees" and not one of them looked older than 21!

Now i know that they are some responsible youngsters who probably know a fair bit about animals etc (i am only 22 but have been keeping rabbits since i was 16) but this particular shop blatantly only employ kids because they're cheap!

I live very close and often pop in to check up on the animals.

What annoyed me was that all four employees were standing around the till "chatting" and I had to break up their conversation to enquire about Xander.

Obviously shops like that will employ "cheap labour" but not to have what I would consider a senior employe on hand isn't very professional.

I'm boycotting Wyevale until they stop selling live animals for good.

I'm glad you're going to boycott the shop. I know you had to take the piggy and it's great that you took him, but it's so sad that they sell them. I avoid shops which sell animals because I'll want to take them home, but I don't want to give them my custom.

Well, to be honest, we only went in there because we understood they didn't!

Julie has been communicating with them about their stance on this and the last thing she got was (extract from the email)

"I would like to inform you that Wyevale do not sell animals in any of our stores. Any animals that you have seen in our branches are part of concessions.

Wyevale’s policy is to review all concessions as they come to the end of their lease to ensure that they no longer sell livestock of any kind. However in the terms of the contract we have to allow them to continue trading until their lease expires.

However I have passed your comments on to our Director of Concessions who has been made aware of the situation."

She has also been communicating with Animal Aid about it whose website we read about Wyevale's new ethical policy to not sell animals.

Well done for continuing to plug away at this one guys, even though you have got your little guy out, worse case scenario is that they put another piggy in his place.:( Lets hope the chap in charge of concessions does something about it. I have a Wyevale just up the road from me and several years ago they removed their animal concession stating Weyvale wanted the space for more routine garden centre equipment etc. I haven't visited for ages, but I might pop in next time I'm passing just to make sure they haven't sneaked any pets back in.

Keep up the good work and if you want any more letters/emails sent in support of your stance let me know.:)

Thanks Sandra! If my emails achieve nothing but to let them know that people remember promises they make and will be monitoring to ensure they stick to it, well it's all we can do for now.

Well done! I must be honest, when I started reading the thread I thought you would end up going back for him - thats what happens with me anyway, hance the addition of Humphrey to our fold, i couldn't stop thinking about him!

I am going to have a look at Xander's pics - he must be delighted with his new home! Aw! ^)

Off Topic

Cant believe so many of you live near my family and I never knew before.

My cousins, aunt, uncle live right near Gillingham football club and Nan and Grandad are just round the corner from Wigmore Smallholders club, near the little wood.

Dont see them very often as I live about 1.5 hours away and oh has bad back so cant be in car for very long.

When I do go I normally take the chance to go ice skating.

Back to topic I would have done what you did if I had room for a piggie and from then on would avoid the place like the plague, sometimes I have been caught out shopping in garden centres where I would never expect to find pets and all of a sudden you see them, usually rabbits, had to leave one garden centre as they had 18 month piggie alone in glass tank, I still feel guilty for not getting it out of there but that was nearly 2 years ago and I have never been back.

Sorry for rambling 8:)

I think you made the right choice and getting the little cutie out of there before any injurries happened!

I'm in the same position at the min, theres a boar getting on to two years on his own in my local pet shop, there wanting £15 for him, like everyone one on here i said i'd only get pigs that realy need a home, but this boar looks just like beanie and looks very lonely and sad.

He seems to be well looked after but I'm worried that because of his age he wont find a home. I told mtself that i wasn't going to get him, but I'm tempted that if i go back and hes still there to bring him home and try and pair him up with on of my young boars who I'm looking for a friend for any way. Why is life so difficult grrrr

piggies and bunnies

i just went to the local fodder store and got some hay for the piggies and faline the bunny.
there was a cage about 2.6ft by 1.6ft and it had a medium size rabbit and a medium size piggy in it.
when i pointed out that piggies and rabbits should not be caged to get i was told that i didn't work in the shop and i did not have the qualifications to tell them how to run their business. grrrrgrrrrgrrrr
the piggy didn't look scared so hoping the piggy will be alright.:...:...:...
like i said before good on you for getting him. if we had the room we would have got the piggy today.:(:(

pet shops are so stupid. They wouldn't put rats and guinea pigs together, nor would they put rabbits and chinchillas together!
there is no excuse for it, and it encourages customers to think it's acceptable !
anyway i'm glad you rescued him marty and julie!:)

Can you report the pet shop to the RSPCA, their guidelines state that rabbits and guinea pigs shouldn't be housed together?

RSPCA here in south oz

i have emailed the RSPCA here in south oz many times and they always say they will look into it but alot of things have changed but not the rabbit and guinea pigs being together. pow-powpow-powpow-pow
so i have written another email and sent it and i will ring monday morning. as i am always complaining i am wondering whether the rspca are just humouring me now?/?/?/
i wish we weren't so far behind the UK in guinea pig recognition and care, like in petshops guinea pig toys are rare, beds for them are rare and vets never/hardly see piggies as it is cheaper to replave than to fix.
and with the cost of living going up i can only see this situation getting worse sadly. will keep you posted.:)p:)p

That's horrible :(

The only way for the law to be changed is for people to keep complaining about it, the trouble is if it is only a handful of people continually complaining they won't be treated seriously enough.

I hate that attitude of "cheaper to replace", you wouldn't say that for a cat or a dog, so why treat guinea pigs any different. :(

Well done for getting that little chap out of there and giving him a wonderful new home and a chance in life.

I am gonna take a look in the Photo gallery in a moment to take a peep at our newest member Xander ... good on you both for following your heart!
