X-ray booked at the vets. Anti-inflammatory seems to be helping?

Went to the vets again today with McMac at 10. He hadn't improved at all during the week so went back and asked what else we could do. She suggested different antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory, which she gave him, and booked me an X-ray to check for stones which is on Monday morning. He has also lost some weight. He was around 1.4kg when he was last weighed and healthy but now he is just 920g :...

He has perked up in the past half an hour or so. When we first got him home he went and hid in the corner again. I cleaned them out and went down to the shops for some bits. Came back with some carrot tops to try and encourage him to eat and he actually came waddling out straight away with Sprout. The past week he has been ignoring all the food I try and temp him with and sitting in the corner. He didn't eat all that much but his interest was encouraging for me. He is now sat next to the food and water, rather then hiding, and seems to be drinking a little more. Wondering if the anti inflammatory is helping relieve some pain that was making him not want to eat.

McMac will need to be knocked out for the x-ray I think, not sure if fully or just enough to make him not move. just hoping he can deal with it.
How much can an x-ray cost on average? I forgot to ask how much it might be :red

Last time I had GA, X rays & bloods for a piggie at our exotics vets it was about £100 I think. It depends what they're doing, bloods are pricey as they're sent out to a lab. Give your vets a call to check then at least you're prepared!

X ray is a good idea for diagnosing things with guineas. Sometimes they can do it without knocking out depending on what angle they need the X rays at & how cooperative piggie is. It will be cheaper without GA but no good if he's likely to jump off the table!

That is a massive weight loss & I would suggest syringe-feeding if you're not doing it already.

Best wishes to McMac :)

I am pleased that McMac has some different antibiotics. Is it Septrin? Anti inflammatories will certainly help with the pain.

Good that he is booked in. When ever I have had a pig x-rayed, it has cost around £60 (they're not cheap but worth it). May be worth phoning your vet to double check.

Hi, Little Eskimo. You use woodlands don't you. The one on manadon roundabout. I took Midge there yesterday, she was sedated for an x-ray, they found sludge in her bladder. She was given some septrin and some nutracys + (similar to cystaease) It came to £40. Hope it all goes well for your little boy on Monday x

Yes I do. Oh thank you, that seems really good. Was worried I was going to have a huge debt to my mum and George then.

I am not sure what she gave him. They have an area filled with all the medical supplies out behind the consolation rooms and so they sometimes take the animals back there if there are going to be multiple injections or something.

Thank you everyone. He is still looking delicate and everything but seems slightly better then he has been. I gave him a segment of my tangerine and he seemed to enjoy most of that. He's come out for another drink too. I have yet to see him eat any hay or pellets on his own though :/

Do you know which antibiotics they gave him. Only because the 2 older girls of the group have had terramycin and they reacted very badly to it. Became depressed and wouldn't eat. Didn't want to come out to play or anything. On both times we had to hand feed and syringe water for them. The only thing they became really interested in was grass and that was a huge effort.

Always good to know which AB the vet is going to use

Poor McMac. I would defiantly find out what AB's thy've given him. They may just box him in for th X-ray or give him a whiff of gas rather than a full GA.
Septrin pedriatric is banana smelling and the adult version is aniseed smelling. What dose is he on?

Lots of love to McMac x

I always ask the vet for an itemised print out at the end of a consult, they will print out a list of all the meds, x-rays etc & the cost :) It's worth asking them each time you go.

Hope McMac gets some relief from the meds & the x-ray goes well on Monday :)

My Sundae had a bladder x-ray a few months ago and was not knocked out for it. They only need to sit still for a moment. I think her tendancy when she is spooked is to freeze, so I don't think she gave them any trouble. They may have more of an issue if he is a runner. As for cost, no idea... I'm in Canada and piggie care seems to be pricey here. Sundae's x-ray was about $200 (consult to read the x-ray included, I believe.) Will they give you the cost in advance if you ask? Our vet always gives an estimate sheet before treatment, just so you know what you're getting into!
