We're thinking about selling our house, we've filled all the space in our little starter home and would really like somewhere a bit bigger with a larger garden.

Anyway, we had the first estate agent round this afternoon to give us a valuation. We've got another one coming tomorrow.... perhaps another after that, we'll have to see how conflicting the reports we get back are..... I was rather concerned about explaining the 'pigs in the spare room' situation when there is a large, well built 6ft hutch sitting on our back patio. I was going for the 'veterinary advice after an operation' approach (well, Brunel was neutered back at the end of September and he has shed all his winter coat after living indoors after the op), but I needn't have worried. The estate agent has pigs inside too! :)

On a less positive note he asked me if I wanted them as his children have lost interest etc. etc. I mentioned our nearest rescue when both my current pigs have come from.

I also told him about the technique my parents had used on my brother and I when we were children. We had rabbits as our first pet, and we were warned that if we didn't look after them as they couldn't look after themselves then Mum would stop feeding us as a lesson. Eventually it did happen. We forgot to feed them one night and we were old enough to know better than to forget (I was about 9, my brother a bit younger). Mum was obviously monitoring what was going on. We came down for dinner expecting to find a nice meal only to discover that the table was only set for Mum and Dad. We realised instantly what we'd forgotten - and it was a lesson we never forgot. We were certainly very hungry by breakfast time, but I don't think one missed meal did us any harm and it certainly taught us about responsibility for our pets. The estate agent was quite impressed and said he'd mention it to his wife. I hope he does!

Aww thats fantastic and taking your advice from your parents in we can only hope the guinea pigs in his life will have a better life too. It already seems they care some if they are indoors. :)

Best of luck with moving homes!

Tewdric, I love your story about your parents, thats just brilliant!

My husband is an estate/letting agent having changed career late in life. He has been to a few houses with guineas as pets and always asks after them, telling them about ours. He even ended up advising a woman on her piggy who was very sick, with matted hair etc, giving her the local vet number etc. I put together a sheet of numbers for hay suppliers, treats, vets, guinea grooming etc which he gave her and the net result was a much happier guinea living in much better conditions. He used to quietly check up on the piggy at every house inspection  He often tries to encourage landlords to allow pets in the house. He uses his personal experience to explain how they don't damage properties and are really very clean.

He is a guinea saint !

I think it was certainly the best way to get that lesson over. No nagging - just the warning that we were responsible for our animals, why we were responsible and then the short, sharp shock when we did mess up. This was in the late 80s mind, I wonder if any parents would do it now just in case the children said something about being hungry at school and social services ended up being called in?

Guinea Slave your husband sounds great. :D So glad that he managed to help the pig and that the woman was prepared to take his advice.

He seemed to like pigs, just not the fact that the kids weren't doing anything with them. I hope he does try my parent's method. If we end up using his agents to attempt to market and sell the house I will be asking him.

Little Lilith came and had a bit of a flirt against the bars at him whilst he was writing notes in the pig room - she's such a show off!

That's good :) If he does then I hope it works! Some kids can be stubborn. I know I was as a child when it came to eating my vegetables mind you, not my animals.

Oh bless her, she's a cutie!

This is so nice to hear! I'm looking to move out within the next few years and am worried about finding somewhere that will let me keep my girls.. So nice to know there's people out there who understand! :D

I find it quite difficult when letting a property via estate agents...a lot don't want indoor pigs inside the properties they manage.

I currently rent from private landlords (a husband and wife) and they are fine with the piggies being inside. If it were dogs or cats...that would be a different matter!
