Velvet's wee tonight was tinged with yellow.......milky but yellow i did her urine test and it totally blew off the scale :...:...:...
I took the sample (thank god she did it when i was changing over the house, she did it in the open so that is why i saw the colour!) i've put it in the fridge, will try to get another in the morning and i'm going to take to the vets and ask them to do tests on it..........
For those that don't know Velvet is a diabetic has cataracts and is blind....... but she's one gutsy little girl and is a happy little pigglie x)

anyone comment ? it's thrown me completely.......i've been struggling with her weight of late....... she keeps gaining i'm just hoping there's nothing else going on ....... i have taken anything possible out of her diet that could even have an ounce of sugar.....she was allowed the odd bit of corn silks, they've been taken out, i also took out her oxbow pellets which she adored.

will let you know my time tomorrow, which i think you guys wont know now till at least tuesday afternoon-evening

really hoping for good news about your little one. can you give insulin to guineas?

Hi love xx>>>
yes you can....... it has been done in the USA
my vet was gobsmacked when he finally realised that Velvet was a diabetic, he had never seen one before or believed it was possible.......that's the problem here in OZ they just haven't got as much experience or the facilities like in the USA or the UK.......

Sorry, I've got no advice to offer glynis. Just wanted to say that I hope she's ok and vet goes well x x

I am sorry - as I have never had a diabetic piggy msyself, I can't help you on that score. I hope that you can find what has caused this new spike!

Whee hope you are ok Velvey and that Nexy is looking after you. Wheeks and snuffles, Misty and Storm x

Aww Velvet, sending you good vibes from across the pond :laluot_15::laluot_15: will be waiting with nerves for your reply Glynis!

I'm really sorry to hear that Velvet isn't too good. I hope that you get some answers soon!

Get well soon Velvey, loves and wheekies from
Frankkie and Finlay.

PS: Mamma thought we were gonna get gased earlier.... it's all the broccoli she feeds us.

it's just gone 5.30pm and i'm waiting to get the results.........i hate waiting :{

The girls have been enjoying some mixed lettuce lately, just hoping that hasn't spiked Velvet's glucose levels, i know there's some minimal sugar in lettuce, natural sugar (i think it's like 0.1 to 10g roughly)

Velvet says wheeeeeeeeeeks for all the lovely messages xoxo

Update!

Inconclusive arghhhhhhhhhhhh

OK urine test - urine normal
Glucose test - TOO HIGH :(

She's having her blood/glucose taken on thursday late morning to get a full/proper reading............ and yeah........... she's having a whiff of gas :..., which i'm not happy about i've pleaded my case, which i will chat again to him about this...... it's something they're not used to here in OZ :(

What's she having the gas for?

Also, what foods has she eaten recently, there may be something that you've over looked, or something new that you've added in? It may be worth keeping a little food diary for her?

erm iso........the safe one

nope gone thru all the foods, she did have some kale a few days ago, but again two small leaves shared between her and Onyx....and i did see them both eating it
i do keep a diary of food, i have to with her........ been doing it now for a year........if i change something i note it down........

thanks love xx>>>

Sorry Glynis, i have no experience with diabetes in pigs but just wanted to pass my good wishes for Velvet
xx

I meant why is she having the gas, which bit needs to be done with her knocked out lol

Has her glucose previously been relatively stable?

Hi Glynis

Sorry to hear Velvet's sugar levels are having a blip. Is she on any medication atm or is it just being controlled by diet?
Apart from the change in wee colour is there anything else about her behaviour that has changed recently. Sugar levels can go up due to the piggie being less active than normal.

Although I know you monitor the diet carefully, it occurred to me that veggies sugar levels change depending upon the seasons...(..thinking about young spring grass or other young leaves compared to the more mature stuff).. aslo upon the weather (thinking about length of sunshine/rain and how that affects sugar content of grapes ref winemaking/vintage etc).so could this be a factor?

I'm hoping this is just a blip...but if it continues then it could be a sign that her diabetes may need a stronger method of control now than just diet.

As for the change in wee colour...prophyrin excretion can sometimes affect wee colour (and can often dry to a rusty brown giving us piggie owners all kinds of fright!). However it could also signify a UTI....and if I recall diabetic piggies are more prone to UTI infection owing to the excess sugar present? Does ti also have a funny smell?

Hope you get to the bottom of this and she gets back on track

hugs and wheeks to all

x

thanks.........yes i racked my brains last night whilst awake for the same reason.......thinking dam the winter grass maybe ? remember in OZ we opposite weather.........so having winter grasses etc... i did mention this and the reason for my concerns to the girls today.....i'll speak to Brendan (vet) on thursday and tell him about the grass and why i was thinking a maybe trigger.

the only thing is in the past month she's slowly gained some weight, this is why i reduced their greens/veg and added more hay each day......... (they have unlimited anyways, but i would add handfuls a couple of times when i got home as well in their hay basket) and this past week the water bottle has gone down more than usual.......they're not big drinkers but last time the water disappeared like this was the same time of the year and she got her cataracts......i think that was May and June if memory is right. (or maybe june july need to look up my diary)

yup she has had a UTI.......but never again, and after having it her levels were GREAT! i mean noooooooooo signs of glucose! she was on baytril.
her wee smells fine i check her regularly (yes i do get up close and personal) i also regularly feel her wee and see if it's gritty... no change in colour other than last night.........and that was a fluke as i'd just started cleaning out and she did it right where i could see the difference in colour (thanks baby)

really appreciate your input......... everyone's i need to have my mind set so i can chat to Brendan with lots of info like i always do!

Love
Glynis and the not so impressed girls...Velvet and Onyx (wondering why am i being punished... no real veggies humph) !
