my heart failure sow fudge hasnt been doing well with her breathing, chest full of fluid and, what looked like, no response to max dose diuretics- it seemed there was nothing i could do for her but care for her best i could until it was time.
Her first bottle of diuretics was 40mg/5ml, which is 8mg/ml, and the dose was up to 0.5ml every 8 hours (4mg). She has been on her second bottle for nearly a MONTH and for some reason i woke during the night and checked the second bottle iv been using (no idea why), only to find to much horror, 0.5ml up to 3 times daily, of a 20MG/5ML SOLUTION! Half the concentration of what she should have gotten! So along my girls been getting 2mg of frusemide (the losest dose) whilst shes been struggling to breathe and iv been breaking my heart thinking theres nothing else i could do!

I called the vets first thing to be told it was a labelling error, and when i insisted they double check, it turns out i was right- shes been on half a ml of a 4mg/ml solution for the past month and had terrible breathing when she should have been on 0.5ml of 8mg solution , which she was given the first time.

I was SO close to having her put to sleep yesterday, and asked the vet on the phone if they realised what that could have done to me and the regret i would have to have lived with if i'd gone through with it then found out?!

Anger/tears been happening today! :hb:

Huge hugs, you have spotted the mistake that is the main thing. Don't think about what could have happened it will eat you up.

Focus on Gorgeous Fudge, get her dosed up to the correct amount and hopefully this will help her breathing again.

Well done for spotting it. Love to you and Fudge, you are doing amazing

Oh hun, that's awful. Sadly I can relate to being let down by a vet, and it resulted in the death of my hamster. I suspect a vet's decision was wrong in regards to one of my piggies, too, Shadow.
It's sickening that these things happen. I know we are all human, and human error happens, but it's so heartbreaking when errors adversely affect the health of any animal.
I hope she starts responding now she is being given more of the meds.
Thank goodness you have spotted it. xx

Oh my God, am gobsmacked, am so glad you looked. Have you noticed any improvement since the higher dose has been given?

oh dear you really are being put up against it :( as sport billy said dont dwell on what could have happened you have enough going on to worry about the extra stress, i'm just so glad you spotted it. Hopefully now her breathing will improve again & everything else will slot into place, improving too :tu:

i must admit i have had issues with labelling errors or dosage changes & so now i check each change of bottle/packet/new dosage often taking notes or keeping the old label for reference next time.
i found if i had seen a different vet at the same practice there were often changes, but if i request to see the same vet by name each time, they usually seem to get the same dosage or just reprint the same label, which cuts down the chances of change/errors.

Fudge is really lucky to have you devoting yourself to her , you are doing a brilliant job. Keep it up, healing vibes being sent for the gorgeous Fudge :luv:& a big ol' bear hug for you too
Ask the vet for the next consultation to be free seeing as they stuffed up, no harm in asking

lots of love from the girls & I. x

I understand we all make mistakes, one of the nurses in my old work gave my cushings yorkie double dose vetoryl she ended up with temporary addisons (opposite of cushings). But if you are in that proffesion its your duty to double check and check again with meds- i Used to triple check meds to patients when i worked in the vet world! Xx

I have no idea why i looked @helen105281 , i think i was checking the date on the bottle to see if it was old and thats why it wasnt working anymore? Her breathings improved slightly but thats only one dose, I'm hoping it continues to help. She isnt keen on drinking anymore, infact i havent seen her drink at all in a few days, but still eating great and her veg is torn up in a bowl of water. She wont take dioralyte anymore and i wont syringe her as its too dangerous with her breathing. I'll keep an eye on her hydration but her eyes are nice and full/ moist and her skin isnt tenting. Xx

I'm actually with a different vet now, one that was recommended by @flintstones and closer to my parents after i had to move back in with them. The last bottle of meds was from the practice that i used for a good year or so and that done crunchies spay last month- i probably wont be back due to the distance if not any other reasons! Xx

I just sat with her @helen105281 whilst she ate some alfalfa hay, and after much persuasion she took a big drink! Just as i said she wouldnt lol. She had a wee on the pad and its quite yellow- she probably needed the fluid but at the same time shes concentrating her urine- which i was told she couldnt do as she was suspected kidney disease.. So every cloud i guess!

that's terrible. i think they are meant to have two people dispense and sign any medication to make sure things like this are very unlikely to happen. maybe ask if they did and if not, recommend something like that is put in place.

things like this scare me. thank goodness you spotted it before making any final decisions x

That's good that she has had a drink. Does she eat much cucumber?

She used to Eat alot of it, but she doesnt eat it anymore. For the past few days shes only wanted cabbage or spinach (bad i know!) but today shes turned her nose up at cucumber only- shes eating everything else thats given to her. I'm
Sure her love of cucumber will come back soon after a few more doses of diuretics.

Ps- shes continued to drink
On her own and is getting brighter by the hour!

Well that's great she is eating, I only asked about the cucumber as it is very liquidy but if she is carrying on drinking that's even better. Pigs choose to breathe rather than eat so maybe it is the same with drinking and now she can breathe easier she is able to eat and drink as she should.

You poor things both of you - how about melon with the skin on - I know its a bit sweet but again its watery - hoping things will now improve x

Shes not a fan of any fruit (other than tomato). Infact the faces she pulls when she sniffs a bit of fruit resembles that of a baby thats sucked on a lemon! Shes always been the same. My other older sow never liked fruit either until after her spay- now she LOVES apple, pears and melon! My baby will eat anything that resembles food.. And even things that dont lol
