I hope you don't mind but I have lost another wonderful friend who is not a guinea but a very beloved horse. Not the usual small furry but somehow sharing on here helps so much. Please admin delete if horses are not appropriate?

Yesterday was one of the worse days of my life, I took my beautiful horse (a lovely big white horse called Zaney) for a lovely afternoon ride. It was a beautiful sunny day and we just decided to go for a wonder around the fields. However he was a little slow which was surprising for him (he is usually a complete nutcase) I knew he had a heart murmur so I have been taking things very carefully with him and he has been enjoying retirement as a result.

We came around the corner to his usual stretch where he gallops and he took the reins and just set off like a racehorse up the hill. I laughed at him and giggled all the way up, he felt so incredibly powerful and well I thought 'well there's nothing wrong with you lad'. As we got to the top he slowed and I patted him (usually it takes me ages to slow him down!) and suddenly he veered to the left and his back end collapsed. He stumbled along trying to get to his feet but he just could not stay upright. I realised then that he was having a heart attack. I managed to jump off in time. He then died with his head in my arms after just a few minutes. It was so traumatic and whilst quick it was not pleasant to watch.

I cannot even describe how I feel now, he was such a lovely horse and we had a very close bond. He was cheeky...the first time I rode him he reared up and fell over with me and we ended up covered in mud with him galloping home! We evented and did showing classes and he was a born show off...he was very very handsome and he knew it (he really was a Desert Orchid look alike). However, he would often search complete strangers pockets for food if he thought they had something. When I lost my guineas he would be a mane to cry on and he used to tuck his chin into me as I hugged in and hug me back. He would also nibble my bum when I was grooming him, cheeky lad! He was a very affectionate horse and one of my best friends.

I can't quite get to grips with this and I am so scared that he suffered and was so scared for those final moments and there was nothing I could do, nothing.

Somehow it helps to share. I hope you don't mind and if anyone on here has been through something similar please do you let me know if they know anything at the end..it is really playing on my mind.

RIP my beautiful lad, you were the very best. Run free with all your other horsey friends and please mind out for the guineas!

Aww I'm really upset reading your news, I'm very very sorry to hear I cant imagine how your feeling right now, I can understand how you can get such a bond as you did so many things together, I'm glad in a way you was there with him cause you held him in his final moments and that would have been a comfort to him, being with someone that loved him so so much.

I am so sorry that you lost your special friend. Heart attacks in anybody are horrible to witness and the shock of being there and not being able to do much is immense. I was literally shaking all over after I lost a piggy to sudden heart failure once! It will take you some time to take it all in and come to terms with it. You wouldn't be a loving pet owner if you were not asking yourself all the questions you are.

However, Zaney was a very happy horse doing what he loved best right up to the moment and he died in the arms of somebody who loved him very much; that is not the worst way to go by a long way!

So sorry, that must have been awful for you. Please take comfort that you were there with him, he would have known you were with him and going to the bridge in your arms would have gave him comfort. He sounded like a very special friend, full of character. *massive hugs*

RIP Zaney

Oh my goodness you poor thing, I am so sorry for your loss :(

He sounds like he was a beautiful animal & companion, I love horses too & can't imagine how awful it must have been for you.

RIP Zaney x

Your words brought tears to my eyes. I am so sorry for your loss. Take comfort in the fact you were with your baby and having a nice day when it happened. I cannot imagine how awful you must feel and the shock you must be in. I wish there was some way I could comfort you.

Thank you so much....the comfort is in all your words, it helps and I really appreciate it, I and many others gain great solace in this forum, thank you. I cannot stop shaking, it never ceases to amaze me how these things effect a person.

You are also right, he did'nt suffer for too long and he died doing what he loved doing more than anything in the world (although eating carrots would have come a close second!).

Oh poor you. So sorry for your loss. 8...

I am a fellow horse rider and have had my horse for 18 years in April. I fear the day when my beloved old girl passes away as she has been with me through thick and thin and there really is nothing like have a good cry on the yard with your horse.
Whilst losing a pet is always very traumatic, I think losing an equine is worse from the point of view that they are so big and it's just not possible to bury them in a nice quiet spot in the garden like a piggy friend.
I really do feel for you and although it must be very traumatic for you, it was probably a quick way to pass and I would think that he probably didn't suffer.

Big hugs to you x

oh heck that made me cry, i am so sorry for your loss, what an awful thing to happen to you. I guess at least you were with your baby when he passed and he wasnt alone in a stable, and he died doing what he loved.

Please dont beat yourself up and think too deeply into things, we all go when it is our time, regardless of the circumstances. I think you should be proud that you loved your baby so much.

I dont have anything to do with horses, but i think they are absolutely awesome creatures and so beautiful to look at and watch running etc, so powerful and proud somehow.

Rip Zaney, you will be missed so much by your mummy.

Hope you are ok x

Is it's sad I crying?
If I had to go through that with my girl Kally, I'd be heart broken!
ever so sorry for you loss, and I wish your horsie well at rainbow bridge!
x
All my best wishes!

I am so very sorry for your loss, what a terrible shock for you. It sounds as if Zaney was doing what he loved right up to the end so please take comfort from that. Sleep well fella.

Oh love, OMG whee are so very very sorry to hear about dear Zaney 8...8...8...
RIP Zaney run free at the bridge, enjoy galloping thru lush green grassy pastures and eating lovely crisp carrots, you'll be so very very sadly missed but NEVER EVER forgotten by your mummy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) and loads of loves from Glynis, Velvet and Onyx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Another little star now twinkling in the sky ........... :(

Love all our animals be they small or large, furry or feathered or scaled they're our friends so therefore they're all welcome here x)
I've sobbed thru your story i'm just so sorry but i am so very glad that he went knowing he had you by his side HUGS XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I am so sorry for your sad loss. But, those last memories of him enjoying himself and the beautiful sunshine will help you in weeks to come. Please dont be hard on yourself I am sure your horse would rather have galloped over the Bridge cradled in your arms than being by himself. .. tears for you xx

Thank you so much everyone. I do feel a bit better today. I think the worse will be going to the yard again in afew days, I am dreading seeing his empty stable and his tack.

Maddey72 - its not sad you are crying :-) I often cry when I read the rainbow bridge posts, its so sad losing your friends and so hard to say goodbye

Doglovinpiggylover - they are such beautiful creatures are'nt they? He used to enjoy a good gallop around the field and I often used to just watch and marvel at him. Stunning creatures.

WhisperingKate - Just enjoy every day you have with her as it seems to all happen so suddenly. I lost a wonderful mare after she broke her leg and shoulder in an accident 20 years ago, I have learnt to savour every minute you have with them as you just never know, sometimes I think they are more delicate that guineas and they do do some stupid things sometimes, for such large animals they are very breakable. I always used to hug him before I left him and now I feel at peace that all the time I spent with him was precious.

Thank you everyone, I have lost four very precious animal companions in the last 9 weeks and I feel battered and bruised but always this forum helps. You are all so kind thank you so so much. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What a very sad story and what an awful shock for you. He sounded as though he was a truly special boy and will be sorely missed.
I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so so sorry what a horrible shock for you. Sleep tight Zaney.

Thank you :-)

I have at last tried to work out how to use the photobucket and I think I have it. I wanted to share with you what such a handsome lad he was.. This is last year just on our way to a show.

First time I have done this so I hope it works...have checked but technology and me don't get on :-(

:( I am so sorry for your loss, what a beautiful lad he was.

I'm a horse lover myself, must be heartbreaking when you lose them.

RIP Zaney x>>

I'm [*]so[/*] sorry for your loss, I can't believe that you had to go through that, but at least you were there with him til the end, and I'm sure he knew that too.

I was heartbroken when I lost my ponyboy as I never got to say goodbye (bit about him here: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83442&page=2&highlight=horse), but on the other hand I can't imagine what it would have been like for you to go through what you have.

Zaney really was a stunner and it sounds like he really lived life to the full, bet he's enjoying himself galloping around up there now. RIP.
