Hello I have a young guinea pig about 1 1/2 months old weighing in at 299g yesterday night at 297 tonight and his tummy feels round,it’s not firm and can be gently moved from side to side but I was wondering if this was normal for a growing boar? He eats and drinks regularly and poops A LOT lol the vet had a once over of him last week and said that he may just be a chunky little guy as she didn’t suspect any bloat. Is he just a chunky guy? The sides aren’t super extended or tender.

Piggies come in all shapes and sizes. The best way to tell whether his weight is ‘right’ for him is to check his BMI (‘heft’). Have a read of the guide below. Weigh weekly rather than daily, unless you are worried there may be something wrong. He should be putting on weight every week.

Does he live alone? They really need company of their own kind and shouldn’t be kept alone.

Please check the 'heft' around the ribcage to see whether he is a good weight for his size, over- or underweight. The heft or BMI gives you the general ball park your piggy plays in weight-wise. I've had a boar who was bordering on underweight at 1400g and his favourite wife who was sturdy at over 700g - but both were still within the acceptable adult weight range, just at the extremes of it.

The weekly health monitoring weigh-in is there to check on any changes in within the individual ball park and to pick up on any possible slowly developing health issues. Whenever you have concerns about the health, you switch to weighing daily.

Please take the time to read our weight guide. You will find it very helpful and interesting. there is no 'normal'for guinea pigs as they can vary so much in size. Their weight also changes naturally as they go through life. Your boy is now reaching his full size and is entering the prime of his life; he will be at his chunkiest and heaviest in the coming two years.

Here is the link again that explains it all in more details and tells you exactly what to look out for when checking for the heft or weight changes: Weight - Monitoring and Management

Weight monitoring is one of the most important and potentially life saving tools in an owner's kit. Normal kitchen scales are perfectly OK.
