My younger guinea pig will scream out and i’ve noticed the older one kicks her, but not sure what she does to her in the box.. I’ve tried to separate them but it still goes on when put back together.. Is this a normal thing?…

Hello and welcome. We really don’t know enough to be able to advise you properly. Please can you answer the following questions
How old are your piggies?
What sex are they?
How long have they been together?
What size cage set up do you have?
Do you have houses with 2 entrances/exits?

This information would be very helpful if you would like us to try to answer your question as to whether this is a normal dominance

I have two females, one about 8 months and the other about 4 months, My cage is 56 inches by 42 inches, I have a big box as a house and there is one entrance, they’ve been together less then a month
Hello and welcome to the forum :) A few more details are needed so we can distinguish between normal dominance behaviour or a bond in trouble. Please answer the questions that @VickiA has asked so we can help further
i responded to it :)

Girl piggies do a very effective reverse-kick with the back leg when approached from behind but I've only seen this when (1) my dominant girl was bustling her submissive friend around and Louise had had enough, or (2) my neutered male was approaching his female cage-mate and she was literally keeping him at arms length! But I don't see this regularly at all - just when the pair were settling into a new environment or when they were being newly bonded. How long have your piggies been together and how long in that enclosure? And is there just one hiding area? I'm wondering if perhaps your cage is a bit too small and if there is only one hidey there might be a battle whereas with a bit more room to get away from each other..? I will say I'm not an expert on space though!

Another thing I see with the girls is that they will spray pee in the eye of a pestering pig approaching from the back but I've only seen my submissive girls do this... presumably the submissive piggy doesn't usually pester the dominant one by pushing them around from behind! Are you seeing any pee spraying and which pig is doing it? Can you tell who is dominant?

Do you know how old the piggies are? It helps us if we are thinking about who is dominant - it's not always the older pig or the one that has been there longest but it is not going to be a 'baby' so that's why we are asking.

Finally - and I'm sorry to ask - but are you 100% your younger piggy is a girl? A young boar pestering an older sow will also get a kick! If someone told you they were, even in a shop, it's still best to check for yourself. We have a sexing guide on the forum but you can also post a photo of her girl bits on here if you have any doubt. For now pop it on this thread and if the answer is not obvious we can ask for it to be moved to the 'pregnancy etc' thread.
