Am currently in the process of registering my boarding business, declaring to the tax man, checking insurance is ok etc (I hate paperwork and am very confused, but anyway!)

Obviously a good business keeps an eye on it's local competition ;) and what I have found is that a lot of places advertising boarding, if you google the phone number, are also breeders.

What I would be interested to know is, while we are all anti-breeding, would this immediately put you off boarding there? Or would you disregard this if you felt they advertised better care?

Please can we not turn this into an anti breeding rant, many of you know how against this I am after Honey's lost baby, but this thread isn't intended to go in that direction please :)

(Also if anyone can make sense of all this HMRC stuff for me, do PM me!)

hmmm difficult one that, I think if I had an unneutered male that was a fine specimen I would be wary in case they decided to use him for breeding from and I wouldn't want my piggies used that way at all. I suppose I would be more inclined to check reviews and recommendations if I knew they were breeding as well. (Luckily my mum and dad will look after my girls while we are on holiday so I don't forsee this becoming an issue for us)

I would check up the accommodation of at least 3 places and talk to the people who would be looking after my piggies. The non breeder would be the first on my list to check but, to be honest, the clincher would be what I thought of the people when I spoke to them and where the piggies would be kept etc. Whatever my thoughts about breeding, the care and attention my piggies would get would be the decider. Also recommendations go along way to making a decision. Good Luck.

Oh and forgot to say I have registered as self employed (ok it was all done a few years back and all I do now are the tax returns) but if you have any questions I don't mind helping out where I can

Thats a tricky one. My primary concern would be for the piggies well being and if I reasearched the company and was satisfied that my piggies would be looked then I imagine Iprobably would board there. I have not had a holiday for the last couple of years as one of my piggies Mimsi is rather high maintenance with impaction and an embedded bladder stone. As he needs daily care, I wouldnt feel right leaving him with anyone other than an experienced piggie owner who would be able to deal with his impaction.. On the otherhand, I suppose it would go against my anti-breeding priniciples if I thought the boarding fees were contributing to the breeding programme. Mmmmmm, interesting topic..

See my initial thoughts when I saw these ads were largely well, if they are busy with their breeding programme and all that involves, would they have time to look after my pigs properly?

I hadn't thought about the money side going to the breeding programme Farquhar, but that is a very valid point.

Lady Kelly, I may be pm'ing you soon! Thank you!

If i had any concerns after meeting the person(s) who'd be caring for my animal i wouldn't use them; breeder or not.

My main concern would be standards of accomodation and how the people were on talking to them; how they treated me and any questions, do they seem to have a genuine love of the animals and are not just trying to make a quick buck etc...

I'd want to make sure they could look after my gang as well as I do and that they'll want for nothing whilst I'm away and that they'll be warm, comfortable and well looked after.

On the flip side, if they are a good breeder who loves pigs, they *should* be knowledgable and understand the needs of the animals. So in some cases I guess it could work both ways and some people may actually see it as an advantage?

(Not me personally by the way ;) Truth be told, for me, if they're a breeder or not wouldn't really come into it, I'd just want the best care I could get)

Hi,

I am an accountant (qualifed) and work for a practice and also deal with mine, husbands and our businesses as well, so if you have any questions on the paperwork or general accounts questions then please drop me a PM and I will do my best to help. :)

With regards to the breeder part, I am not sure if I would want to, luckily I have a rescue nearby that does boarding and I use her when we go away.

I probably wouldn't. I would be concerned in case they took a look at any of my boars and thought they would make nice babies. That in itself is bad enough, but then I reckon it could affect behaviour, and all my boars get on really well, so I wouldn't want to upset that. Goes without saying though, the accommodation and care offered would be equally important. This does make the breeder/boarder sound rather unscrupulous, which I'm sure most are not, however I don't think I would want to chance it. xx

We've run a boarding business for the past 5 years and we often get asked if we breed (which we dont) or we get calls offering us pigs or people wanting to buy them. If I have to board our own pigs when we go on holiday, I definitely would not leave them with a breeder.

I have actually booked my piggies to
Board with a breeder whilst we're away, I figured that she obviously understands them and would care better for them and spot any signs if illness than imposing on family etc who have no experience of piggies to look after my high maintenance piggies! I didn't have a lot of choice as there is only one boarder I could find locally, but feel my piggies will be well cared for.

I won't board with a breeder. Its a moral decision.
If I hate what they do, i cannot possibly pay them for their services.
Secondly, if you are breeding, the boarding will be your secondary income, so do they really have my piggies best interests at heart?

My family look after my piggies but I would let them board with a reptable border if they breed.
Firstly they'd probably spot any illness asap and secondly surely if they are reputable then they wouldn't use my boars to breed as they have no background info on them.
I thought 'decent' breeders did their homework and kept to strict guidelines over their bloodlines (?).
2 of mine are from a breeder and he has oodles of info on each of his piggies, so would they really take the risk?
