Some of you will be aware of Yorkie's situation at the minute; drinking lots, squeeling whilst weeing and pooping, loss of weight etc.

The results have come back from his blood test from yesterday about his kidneys and they said they are very high. Meaning he is possibly having kidney failure at the minute - whether that be actual kidney problems, or kidney problems due to something else, i.e. a bladder stone.

They also said that the results were higher than the normal results for a piggy with a bladder stone.
I am in a predicament - do i put him through the GA to have an xray? possibly damaging his kidneys further (as GAs do) to find out what is actually wrong.
Or do I keep syringe feeding him until his quality of life has diminished. Or do I get him put to sleep?
He may even die from the GA from the xray, but if it is bladder stones and they do the operation to remove them they said he will be left with some kidney damage due to his kidneys being quite in a poor state currently.

PLEASE HELP! I NEED YOUR ADVICE. my dad says to at least give him a chance by giving him the xray and my mum says i should syringe feed him until he is too poorly and then have him put to sleep.
Thanks
Amy

well i would say give him a chance and have the xray because he is not so good now and is getting more poorly so the xray might find something that is fixable and i think if you don;t try you may always think what if or could i have done more? won't they even consider xray without GA? sorry more questions not many answers sorry!

Try to persuade your vet to give an x-ray without GA a chance!

have the xrays done WITHOUT GA as it is easily done with guineas using correct positioning aids, especially as it's to his detriment to have a ga if not needed and at least then you'll have a clearer picture and then can think what to do from there.:)

I personally would 100% definitely give him a chance by getting an xray done. I may have missed something as I'm not familiar with Yorkie's story, sorry....does your Vet never do xrays without GA? I'm very fortunate in that my current Vet routinely xrays without GA but my previous one didn't - one of the reasons why I switched (and it is very easy to switch, if you can find (and get to) a better Vet elsewhere). Is there any way you can get a 2nd opinion by taking him somewhere which will do conscious xrays?

My sister convinced her Vet to do a conscious xray when her piggy needed one. It's not something her Vet normally does but she persuaded them to try and sand bag him and it worked fine.

Amy it might be better to try to just keep everything in one thread now as new people reading this won't know all the history of whats gone on.

Just tell them your concerns about the anaesthetic and ask if they'd be willing to do one without. Though I think it all depends on your piggie and whether it will sit ok for it. If it were me in your situation I'd do something now incase he deteriorates then you won't have the option of the op.

Well... i've booked him in for the xray. I mentioned the xray without GA but the vet said the picture might not be good enough as he may move or might not be able to position him carefully enough.

And higilty, that's what i'm asking. The aneasthetic can affect his kidneys, which are currently having problems, but if i dont have an xray i wont find out. So it's catch 22.

And this is the 3rd vet i've been to. And this 3rd one was recommended to me by Niki from the forum.

Well i've booked him in, not sure if that's the right thing as he may even die under the GA.

I have followed Yorkie's story. I think I would also go for the x-ray, even if it has to be with a GA. I know there's risk involved but I wouldn't want to keep a guinea pig going not knowing if they were getting any relief. It's a tough decision either way.

If they do the x-ray and it is bladder stones, do they then remove them at the same time so a second GA isn't necessary? I've never had to deal with anything like this, so I'm not sure how it works.

Big hugs to you both. x

Thanks flips.
I'm going to say in the morning that if they do find bladder stones to just operate there and then if they can, so, like you say, they dont have to give him another GA and put him through it all again.

I am actually praying it is a bladder stone, as that is something they can sort. Kidney failure and/or tumour is obviously another matter.
Poor little Yorkie. He's so sweet. I know you can't have favourites but Yorkie really has always been my favourite (dave hates me! ).

My next dilemma would be what to do with dave if, and god forbid, yorkie dies. Dave will be lost without Yorkie, and i know he wouldnt take anyone else into his home. But he will hate being on his own. Well anyway, one step at a time hey.
xx

I think you've done the right thing Amy, with an x-ray you will know wether it is stones or not.

Is Adam doing the x-ray? Did he say he/whomever would try conscious first & if they didn't get a good image they would sedate? I've never had to have had any of mine x-rayed so don't know what they do.

I recommended them to Amy because they are better than my previous vets, I had them recommended to me by Linda (susiechin on here) at ChinsRUs & also know they are also used by Yorkshire Animal Shelter, Camp Nibble & have cases referred to them by other vets.

I will be thinking about you, Yorkie & Dave tomorrow Amy x

Keeping everything crossed for you. will be thinking of you and Yorkie tomorrow x

Good luck today.

For what it's worth, I have to say I would go with x-ray as well - but I really do understand the dilemma you've been thinking through.

These sorts of decisions would be so much easier to make if vets were trained to do x-rays without sedating already poorly pigs. :(

Good luck. I wasn't familiar with Yorkie's story but it sounds like you're in a really difficult place and have done everything you can to get him this far. I really appreciate that good Vets are few and far between and you've done your best to find the best you can. I really hope you come back with good news x

Sorry, I just read your recent update on your other thread. I'm so sorry for your loss - so sad.

Doing your best to give him a fighting chance was the right thing to do and I would've done the same in your position. Sadly we can only do our best and sometimes it's just not enough as some things are simply beyond our control and not meant to be. I'm truly sorry that Yorkie couldn't fight any longer but hope you find some consolation in the fact that he's no longer in pain x
