i want to buy a bale of hay from the horse feed farm but i am worried about getting lice or mites from the hay?
i usually buy dust free hay from the pet shop but it is becoming so pricey i want to buy a bale, what is your opinion on horse feed hay?
would it be fine to store it in the garage?
where do lice and mites come from?
any advice welcome!

A bought a bale once never again! It was dusty as hell and only fit for the bin! Lice can come in on hay but not just hay from farms, any hay! :) Mites they are born with and they come out on them in times of stress.

A dry area is fine to store hay. :)

I buy my hay from a local farm and I've never had any problems with lice, mites or anything else and I use a bale every week.

Worth asking if you can have a look at a bale before you buy it though as some farm bales can be horrible. The farmer I buy my from is very willing to split a bale open so you can have a look and smell. He will then give anyone a section in a bag to try before buying a bale.

Hiya,

I have bought some farm hay for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I am very happy with it, it's much better than the p@h stuff, long, sweet smelling and the piggies and my rabbit love it!

It's £3 for a huge bale and it weights about 20kg. Can't comment on the lice or mites, had no problems so far. I would go to your local farm and have a look at the hay and check how the quality it. I store mine in our shed in a huge builders/rubble bag and I love going in there now, it smells just like a hay barn :).

Here is a guide on how to identify good quality hay: Identify good hay

farm hay is fab only problem i can see with it is the amount they eat love, my rabbits love the stuff and the piggy devour it, i find i use a lot more but then its much cheaper so i can afford to,

I now get my hay from a farm but I did have to shop around and the farm I use now has wonderful fresh aromatic hay. I have not had a problem with lice etc and it isn't dusty either! You could source some farms in your area and ask them for a small sample to see what it is like?
