Hello - my 2 young boars were being fed a muesli type mixed food when I got them a couple of months ago. It had flakes/seeds etc and they were selective feeding and leaving any healthy looking bits. (As I would most probably do myself!) I used to have a pet rabbit who did this and the vet recommended a burgess nugget food instead and she lived to be 11. So I've been slowly swapping the boys onto the guinea pig burgess nuggets over the last few weeks.

I've been a little concerned that 1 of the boys weight hasn't been going up as much as the other. At 4 months old I was expecting them to put on around 30g a week. Otis has only put on 6g this week compared to Wilburs 36g even though he is the greedy veggie monster who chews at the bars to demand food!:)) I've been watching him closely and don't think he's really eating the pellets, the dish goes down every day but neither piggie seems very interested in them.

I'm going to buy them a different food to try and see if this makes a difference. Can anyone recommend a pellet food that is popular with their piggies?

X

Rather then buy another pellet I think he needs to get used to it as that really is the best one for piggies. If you feel concerned he is not putting weight on have you noticed if he has been eating hay and vegetables?

My guinea pigs wouldn't eat pellets all they liked was Gerty Guinea Pig, but I got the Oxbow pellets and they loved them now!

Which burgess pellet is it? There are 2, one is the original which is a kidney shape - my piggies wont touch this, this others are much smaller and are blackcurrant and oregano flavoured which ALL piggies love! i would try the blackcurrant and oregano ones and go from there.

They're the kidney shaped ones. They've had them gradually introduced over the last 6 weeks but really dont seem keen. I like burgess for the nutritional value as mentioned before - my rabbit thrived on them - but would also like to feeding them something they actually enjoy. :{

They both eat a lot of hay and veg - I've cut down the veg the last couple of days as think they're filling up on this rather than eating any fattening pellets but they still hardly touch them and just eat more hay.

I was thinking of getting some of the harringtons wagg pellets as these are still nutritionally good but may taste nicer to the piggies?

Ooh really! Its the kidney shape ones they're on - will have a look for the others! Thanks :)

I could pop a handful of mine in a sandwich bag in the post to you? To save you buying them and them not liking them.

The harringtons are also very highly recommended and popular with piggies.

Awww thanks thats a very kind offer - as it's payday and I'm popping to the shops after work however I will look out for it and splash out on a new bag if i can find it! Thanks for the offer and advice! x>>

Your Welcome, they are in the orange bag but there is purple on it aswell. Good luck, i know pets at home sell it, but i've never seen it in any small independent pet shops around here. x

Mine love the Harrington's pellets, they used to be called Wagg Optimum. They never waste any, they aren't expensive either & Asda stock them. I tried Oxbow ones & they leave them :(
