Hi my piggy was prescribed the new zithromax for a really bad infection/abcess. Hes been on it for 12 days, and I was wondering how long they should be on it for? All his infection is gone and he just has some inflamation due to a small reaction to some internal sutures (I'm sure thats what she said) She spoke to the vet pioneering it, to get all the info and she said that he should be on it for about 4wks, can this be right, or is she just trying to get money out of me? Just want to know as my OH has lost his job and money is tight. If any of you have used it how long were your piggys on it for?

just a note, perhaps you would like to post this in 'health and illness', you will probably get a better response there :)

I've not used Zithromax before so I can't really advise, but as with all medications, if you are worried speak to your vet, and if in doubt get a second opinion from a cavy savvy vet!

My partner lost his job last April, and then we had to pay for a bladder stone op, so I know how tough it can be money-wise. I had to give up a few things to pay for it, but it was worth it. And things will pick up - keep your chin up! :)

I have also been given a full course of zithromax for four weeks for my own boar earlier this year. The four weeks are necessary to prevent the infection from coming back again worse than ever; you really need to be sure that there is no way back for it. The good news is that zithromax is the best AB for that situation and really saves lives. You are lucky to have access to the Maddocks; most vets wouldn't prescribe it!

Sorry about your problems! But it will be worth it.

Just wanted to wish your piggy luck with his recovery.

Also wondered if Wiebke could tell me what illness' and problems zithromax is normally prescribed for and if it is a better alternative to Baytril or if it is for more serious conditions? I have heard Baytril can be hard on the gut, and in case i have any future cases, i like to know backgrounds to medicines and understand them.

Thanks

Zithromax (azithromycin) is a human antibiotic that is especially good with really bad bacterial infections like abscesses (in rabbits too), internal infections or bad URIs. It works where baytril is not strong enough and can save lives in those cases. Zithromax should be rather used as a last ditch AB. For milder problems, septrin is usually a perfectly good alternative for baytril; it is much better on the guts.

If you think you have a problem that warrants the use of zithromax, please ask your vet to contact Simon Maddock in Northampton. That is what I did with my new (general) vet. http://www.inorthamptonshire.co.uk/profile/457491/Northampton/Cat-and-Rabbit-Care-Clinic/

I dont have any problems at the moment thank goodness, but i always like to be best prepared just incase, so that i know what the vet is trying to prescribe etc and understand it if that makes sense, also to learn and advise members if and what they should need etc.

I had to use Baytril earlier this year and didn't have any problems with it to be fair.

Thank you.

Hi monica, As l understand it zithromax, can, and often is prescribed over a long period of time , depending on the condition .

the way that l get round the hellish costs that a vet charges , is to ask them for a repeat veterinary prescription £10 , and specify that you want to cover the duration of the illness ! so you can repeat order from your chemist (cost should be no more than £7 )

or send your repeat script to one of the many on line pharmacies and get it for £6

you simply mix the powder with the specified amount of water (depends if you get 15ml pack or 22ml

best wishes with you pig

Can you do that? I didnt know I usually get the AB from the vet themselves, can I get it through a normal chemist? My vet is charging me £20 a pop! And its money I need! If I can cut the price in half then great!

Thanks I will keep giving the AB but just wanted to be sure the vet got it right. Thanks

Yes any good vet will write you a private script , especially if the treatment is to last for more than a couple of weeks , (and if you are very lucky they will not charge you the standard £10, has happened to me a few times x) )

l get them for any condition that is possibly ongoing , as weekly vet meds are far to costly

in fact if was a vet that suggested it to me in the first place ,

and l am sure they are morally bound to give you the choice of the cheapest option if you ask for it ;)

in addition to my last post !
just thought it safest to mention , abscesses are not like common all garden bacterial infections , they are walled off from the blood supply hence the need for a powerful anti b like Azithromycin (Zithromax )

and if you vet has said 4 weeks , then it may be a mistake to stop , just because it seams to have cleared up .

if you stop now and there are any bacterium still left , they could build up an imunity to the drug , making it a real problem :x

Slightly off topic but I have had several boars neutered and have never had an abcess develop if the vet has used glue instead of stitches. A lot of piggies seem to have a bad reaction to the stitches.

Thanks 'gizzy' I collected his AB today and mentioned about the prescription and she said that it should be fine and to discuss it with the vet on Friday when hes in for his check, still had to pay £24 for this batch though :( I just think its sad that the vet didnt mention this to me :( makes me feel like they just wanted to get money out of me :(

Hi monica, l don't think your vet is any different than most wets , you have to remember that big pharmacy chains like lloyds pharmacy (the one l get mine from ) and the other line superstore's , buy in bulk and are able to give you big discounts .

your vet may also say Ahh well we mix it for you ! but you need to point out that the much cheaper hi street pharmacy also do this and they only change £ 6-8, as opposed to £24 :p

best wishes with your piggy x>>
