Hi, I just wondered if there was much experience regarding this drug please? My piggy has been put on this for a gut/bladder infection which is making him very poorly. It is the only antibiotic that the bug is sensitive to and he had his first dose earlier. My query is if this dose sounds correct please?
He has been put on 0.3ml x2 daily of the 200mg/5ml strength. He weighs 1200g. I'm reading a lot of threads though that say the standard dose is 0.1ml for every 100g? My vet is cavy savvy and he is good but this isn't a drug that he tends to use on pigs from what I can gather? I really don't want to question his dosages as like I say, he's usually very good and certainly doesn't shy away from giving high doses when needed?
It also hasn't been stated how long to keep him on it ( I will be asking tomorrow ) but the instructions say that the solution must be thrown after only 5 days! So that seems a very short course of A/B's? But again, other sites I have looked at say the solution is ok to keep for 10 days! Is there an average timescale that this a/biotic is given for? Some advice would be great please :-) Thank you.xx

It is OK to keep for longer than it says on the bottle. It is a meant to be given once a day and your boy should be on a dose of 1.2ml. You should finish the quantity you have been given and then review.

As an antibiotic, it is far kinder to the gut than other available options. I've never had any pigs have a problem, but if you feel probiotics would help, then use them.

@furryfriends (TEAS) - can you confirm?

I am using probiotics thanks. I'm not to concerned about side effects, I just want to make sure he is receiving the maximum dose as we really need to rid this bug from his gut. That's what I thought regarding the dose. Not easy though querying a professional vet as to why he is on such a low dose!

Thank you so much for your replies. I really appreciate them :-) Just to confirm, this is for the 200mg/5ml strength that you are referring to is it? ( I'm not even sure if there are other strengths?) I will phone in the morning and ask for permission to up the dose in that case

Also, does it matter if it is split into 2 rather than giving it to him all in one go? I was always told it's best to split doses with piggies as their systems push the meds through so much quicker than with other animals?

Yes, that is the strength we use

It works best as one dose. Administering it this way packs a bigger punch than two half doses at either end of the day.
