Hi all. One of my guinea pigs was recently diagnosed as having a chest infection and the vet gave me baytril, 0.4ml twice a day. He really perked up and went from eating very little to having his appetite back. He now seems fine in himself but I'm just not convinced hes fully over it. He still sounds slightly raspy. Ive been searching the forum and have seen Zithromax mentioned and just wanted a bit of advice really. I will be going back to the vet to check everything okay so should I mention Zithromax? Also if you all think this is a drug worth trying but the vet disagrees is there anywhere online I could purchase it? Thank you in advance for your help.

I was advised by Lucinda to try Zithromax for Ben's abscess if Baytril didn't work for him. Fortunately it did so I didn't have any experience with Zithromax. However, I did ask the vet, just in case, and she said that they only normally prescribe it for cats and dogs. Even so, she said that it was a route she was willing to go down only I'd have to sign to say I agreed to it.

Zithromax is a fantastic antibiotic, especially for URI's, pneumonia and it works particularly well in the treatment of abscesses.

I've used it quite a lot now on my piggies with wonderful results and it's also so well tolerated and doesn't upset the gut like baytril does.

If anyone wants any further info about this antibiotic, dosages etc please PM me.
