let me know what you think of it if you end up ordering before me :) i'm currently searching for a back-up soft hay for times the hay4pets ings hay isn't soft enough :)

Hi everyone...
I also like the look of that hay, but only have two piggies so to buy in bulk It would be nice to have a recommendation first as that would last me a while.
Let us know if you order and give us your verdict thanks x

Hi @Emmnpete , sorry for the late reply,
lf you buy in bulk and store it in a cool dri place , there is no reason why it sholdent last for many many months even years

wfi

Hi, in was thinking a little more about the cost of bulk buying rather than the storage :lol!: x

Technically bulk buying is liking to save you money as it means less purchases for small bags which really do add up.

Although I tend to find I give more because I have more . You can never have to much hay after all!

Yeh bulk buying is defo the way forward financially, ...but in this instance when no one can recommend the hay, it may be money wasted if it's not nice :D especially at this time of year, bulk buying hay is last on my list hahahah x

:D That hay does look very nice. And £13.99 for 15 kg is a great price. It will be interesting to see if the actual hay lives up to the picture. I've just received a 9.5 kg bag of Ings so won't be needing any for a couple of months. but will keep it in mind.

Ooh can't belie've I am getting excited over someone giving feedback about hay ! Hahahha :lol!: We will wait for your piggies decision x

got my order already - super quick!

well it takes alot to impress me but this hay is really nice. it's very soft so soft enough for trays/floor and for burrowing. it's quite green (less green than oxbow orchard grass but alot more green than hays like hay4pets etc)

the strands are quite short - longer than pet shop type hays but alot shorter than oxbow, hay4pets, timothyhay.co.uk etc. i'd ideally like the strands a bit longer but they're still not too bad.

the bale is soooooo compact though! i don't know how they compressed 15kg that small! it's heavy (for me anyway!) but comes off in slices once you cut off the ties (it has blue rope ties like a proper bale)

it smells very fragrant. i could smell it as soon as o/h opened the door to the delivery man! but surprisingly it didn't make me sneeze when i was sorting it out. very unusual for me!

most importantly, both mollie and benjie like it :tu: i've mixed it with their hay4pets meadow and the meadow hay @Rosehip is selling and they are loving the mix :)

i'd buy it again, but probably as my back-up hay when the hay4pets ings hay isn't soft enough for the trays. it is the majority of the time, but when it isn't, i need other options because mollie has to have her beloved tray nest :))

hope that helps :)

Wow biscandmat what a fab review hahaha..
I might just have to order some now ..
Thanks very much for sharing your information with us all

haha, i take this hay business thing very seriously :))

my skin has started to itch alot tonight but i'm not sure if it's because of the hay or not. usually i would react straight away if something sets me off, but it could be. although with me, it could be anything because i seem to be sensitive to more things than i'm not

the skin itching turned out not to be the hay. it has been a bit dusty in places through the bale. benjie has sneezed a couple of times when i've first put it in. i think it would be ok if i'd taken it outside to take apart and transfer into boxes though.

i'm not sure if i like it as much now. i am very fussy though :))

Biscandmat.....how did you get on with the hay ?
Is it lasting a while ? And ok quality all the way through the bag ?
I was going to order some this week .......I've been waiting until after Xmas.
I am just wanting a good value for money large meadow hay bale.
Using a supermarket compact bale at the moment, so guessing this might be nicer !?
  • Thanks x

i'm just getting to the end of the bale now and it's been good. i wouldn't say you get the amount it says though because some bits are short and a bit dusty and some parts were that type of hay that seems to tangle (hope that makes sense) - but it's still a decent amount for the price. and the majority of the bale that is good is really nice, soft and green. it's a good one for trays or on the floor because it's soft enough and shorter strands.

mollie and benjie have enjoyed eating it so that's probably the best test of how good it is :))

i've gone through it all in about a month but i do use alot, in the litter tray and every so often all over the floor aswell. it's been a good one to mix with other hays aswell and they've enjoyed burrowing through it, and mollie has been sleeping in it and she takes her hay nests very seriously :)) :luv:

i would say it's definitely nicer than a supermarket hay. i'd buy it again but probably as a back up to hay4pets ings (this is soft enough 95% of the time i'd say) or every three months when i order their vitakraft pellets from the same place :)

Thanks very much again for the feedback..
Hay for pets - have you had the Timothy & Rye 9.5kilo box ?
If so how long did that last you ?
How big was the box ? Or hay bag once opened ?
I am finding it difficult to choose hay online as finding it difficult to judge weights and sizes etc... And when you are on a tight budget - I don't want to buy a box/bag and only last a few weeks..
Currently using supermarket meadow hay for tray and burrowing...and Timothy for their hay rack ...but ideally I would like to try something else.
Sorry for all the silly hay questions hahah tha is x

not silly at all :)

i have used the timothy+rye in the past but stick to the one from timothyhay.co.uk now, the 2013 batch. they all love it. hay for pets offer a sample of hay/s for the postage cost to send so might be a good way to try it first. the hayexperts also do a sample pack of a variety of hays aswell. and i'm sure the man from timothyhay.co.uk would be happy to send a sample if you asked aswell.

i'm probably not the best person to ask how long hay lasts because i go through it so quickly. the 9.5kg ings hay bag lasts me about a month but i've heard people making it last two, even three months! so it depends how hay happy you get :)) if you just use the timothy in a rack then a 9.5kg bag would last at least two months i would think :) it is compressed but still a large bag.

i can send a sample of the zooplus one if you'd like? got a small amount left. let me know :)

Aww Thanks so much again for all the extremely helpful info..:yahoo:
I am just going to bite the bullett and buy some you've suggested...
I've got x2 big bags of meadow hay, and running put of Timothy...so I need to buy that one first !
So I will let you know how I get on hahah :bronco:

i have been using this hay for a month,is very good as bedding hay in hutches,i have 13 cavies and they all eat this hay.its green ,though short to medium strands, some of my piggies are outside in covered hutche so good for bedroom area.i shake it before putting it in,decreases risk of eye injuries when slightly shorter.use dust free meadow hay in racks.zooplus hay lasts me 2 months.its great for the price.thanks Eileenxxx

Hiya a bit of an update...
I finally made the decision to bulk buy and ordered 10kg Timothy hay from Timothy hay online....
The bag is massive and will last me ages, the hay is easily sectioned already in the bag which is handy. Now I am obviously not a guinea pig....but it looks nice to me...
But my boys are not keen !
I Ann not a happy piggy mammy !
Well I am putting my foot down and they will have to like it or lump it !
Hahahaha as I've got 10kg bag to get through.
Xx

if you have some of your previous hay mix that in equal amounts reducing previous hay over ten days until eating your timothy hay.that is how mine get to eat new hay.guinea pigs are stubborn about hay!:yahoo:

oh dear .. naughty piggies :)) which batch did you get? mine are still having the 2013 which they love but i noticed last order that they are now selling the 2015 batch aswell :)

Hi all..
It's the 2013 batch, which to me looks lovely, nice quality Timothy hay.
I only use Timothy hay in my rack and meadow hay in my tray....but they are not touching the Timothy hay hahahahahh.......typical ! I've tried mixing it, but the little horrors still leave it.......so their stubborn piggy mamma is just replenishing it every other day in the rack - in the hope that they will eat it hahah x
