So vet's first thought was heart issues, but on careful examination she thinks Flubs has improved compared to the previous consults -- he's put on a bit of weight and his heart sounds fine, though his breathing still isn't great and is representative of a URI. She's asked I continue with the...
Thanks for the reply.
Hes already seen the vet (who is our normal vet and usually very good with our little ones) and they noted the laboured breathing but couldn't hear anything on the lung.
The timing, with it starting as soon as he came back from the groomers, makes me think its something...
Ted, Ginger and Posh sending lots of healing vibes to poor Blod 💕
When Ted suddenly went down with a URI and really struggling to breathe he was given Marbocyl by Simon Maddock. Initially by injections, which Debbie then did for a few days. Once he improved he went on to tablets. Simon thought...
Hi, it isnt uncommon for URIs to be a bit persistant and the vet may need to try a different antibiotic or a higher dose of the existing antibiotic before its clears- I recently went through this myself with Blodwen pig, and @Betsy is going through this right now with poor grunty honky Dennis...
Glad to hear there’s some improvement for your little guy 🤞🏻🤞🏻
I’ve used both Marbocyl and Azithromycin, found them both effective and luckily no negative effects. Though my vet did suggest Marbocyl as one to use if the piggy is more sensitive/prone to digestive upsets.
Really hope your guy...
Marbocyl and azithromycin are both good antibiotics. Marbocyl is part of the same family of antibiotics as baytril. I have never been prescribed it for lung infections but have been prescribed azithromycin with great success, it was the antibiotic of choice for LRI at the vets where I used to...
Hi!
These can be symptoms of a twisted gut; especially the retching, heaving and vomiting. It comes on very suddenly and gets worse very quickly. Unless you are extremely lucky to have immediate access to an exotics vet's operation table, there is nothing you can do. :(
These are not...
I'm so sorry to hear you've been through this too, but thank you so much for your reply. It's reassured me that I don't need to leap to the worst case scenario immediately, and you've let me know what I need to keep in mind when talking to the vet next time. I'll definitely remember ask about...
Pneumonia
Have a read through this link as it involves baytril & doxycycline together
Looks like it was an improvement in the Guineas condition. :D
(think I've read somewhere on here that the doxy might be detrimental to their appetite, the vet might need to monitor/consider this?)
@Pinki I'm...
Thank you for posting. too many vets seem to think that a short course of baytril is enough; but it is not necessarily working for all piggies.
All the best that the sulfatrim will do the trick! Respiratory infections can be caused by a variety of bacteria and other bugs so good old baytril is...
Pneumonia cannot be treated with Baytril. Baytril is a waste of time with guineas in my opinion- sorry it drives me nuts because vets prescribe it because it is the only antibiotic licensed for guineas. But it never clears the issue. You need to give him a diuretic 0.4ml of Frusol every 8 hours...
That is true, one of my rats it's like this after. A past uri, and I have had a Guinea pig live 6 years with this crackling, because of a past uri that wasn't treated in time by the pervious owners I rescued from( a school) no antibiotics would touch it. I must have been to the vets with him...
The dreaded URI has come around again. We have her on a diuretic but going to the vets in the morning to get antibiotic. I was wondering if people had a preferred antibiotic in this situation. I'm not able to make it to my trusted guinea pig vet, so I'll be at the mercy of a non specialised cats...
Hi!
Enrofloxacin is the active ingredient in baytril, which is the officially licensed antibiotic in guinea pigs. You can find it in your safe medications link, which includes a chapter on safe antibiotics with their active ingredients.
Other members can help you better with practical tips and...
Also, I know this seems like a bit late for me to ask just now, but what's a diuretic? Also, how fast should her stomach be moving? It's moving a little bit but still rapidly.
...such as Furosemide lots of threads here on the subject of these helpign piggies with URI is fluid is on lungs Search results for query: diureticuri
Also maybe worth speaking to the vet about switching Antibiotic to another piggy safe one if still no results or getting worse Guinea Lynx ...
Hi friends,
As most of you all know fluffy had unexpected back to back pregnancy which made her a weak and sick piggy. I love her so much. She was initial prescribed for Septran (Bactrim) for congestion 10 days back. Due to these unexpected pregnancies her weight is also very low. Only 520 GMs...
Baytril is generally the default antibiotic for URIs, but if your piggy has a story of reacting badly to it, the new unflavoured adult strength vet version of septrin (which is called sulfatrim), has now been licensed for exotic pets - including guinea pigs.
All the best for a quick recovery!
