...him regularly and although less than he was in his younger years it's staying the same. My VERY good vet has suggested testing him for thyroid issues and possibly starting meds if necessary, saying that you have to "play around a bit" to find the right dose. Has anyone done thyroid meds for...
...can be outrageous... I ended up paying something like 700 CAD for my past girl, Tomie, to have a vet assessment and blood work- she had a thyroid problem, guess what isn't included on the standard rodent blood panel and requires a whole specialty blood panel? If you guessed thyroid hormones...
So the result of the needle biopsy is not conclusive - it may be a thyroid tumour benign or cancerous
Treatment suggestions are gen anaesthetic to take full bloods to check for thyroid level, take a bigger piece of the lump and then decide what next.
The Vet offered an ultra sound and...
...a small and squishy lump under her neck inside her dewlap (was checked by a vet as soon as we found it) the vet was highly suspicious of hyperthyroidism especially alongside her big appetite and weight loss.
The CT confirmed enlarged thyroid along with a very small abscess behind a...
...escaped again. But I cannot stress enough quite how out of character this is for Merlin!
With all of these symptoms, my mind jumped to hyperthyroidism, and after a vet trip this afternoon, the vet also brought this up as a likely candidate, as well as one of the most treatable of potential...
Ate two yesterday evening, and two for breakfast. I dont know if I should say I'm blessed with a overactive thyroid or if its a curse 😅 I'm like a guinea pig - never full.
Oh and he believes the lump under her neck isn’t attached to the thyroid which makes thyroid cancer less likely which is good news
Confusing of course as have been told by two vets it’s associated with the thyroid but realistically it doesn’t change a whole lot as all we want is to keep her...
...vet took a sample from the lump on her chin. It doesn’t look like an abscess. He said it’s similar to other lumps on her body and is possibly thyroid/cancer related. It would’ve cost £200 to send the sample to a lab to have possibly confirmed this despite already deciding never to put her...
...for mites with vet strength medication he has had fungal baths to no effect so now he has had a skin scrape. I wondered if anybody has had any experience of a Teddy loosing hair and there being no obvious cause. The vet is going to move on to blood test for thyroid or hormones. Any...
...they used to be when younger, particularly if they lost a lot, and instead just maintain at a new lower level. It does not necessarily mean thyroid issues are present, and the fact he is now maintaining his new weight is encouraging.
Equally it is also normal for older piggies to lose some...
Sounds like Macy’s is living her best how she can and with a devoted slave to make sure she does ❤️
I’m glad the lump didn’t add to Macy’s mescaline condition anyhow
Espresso is clearly enjoying bring top pig 😂
...peace during the day. He had an elevated heart rate as well as his fast breathing at the vets - she didn’t rule out a heart condition or a thyroid problem but there are limited treatment options. But his temperature was normal. His appetite seems to have improved and his breathing rate...
...anymore. I do know we started low and titrated up based on results. I believe it's safer to start low as rapidly switching over to hyperthyroid is extremely dangerous in its own right. Sorry I couldn't help more, I hope that Simon has some answers! We did do the blood work because the...
...you everyone, I really appreciate your support. I've booked her in today to see Simon. Because she is drastically loosing weight...I think it's thyroid related because she eats so much and has soft stools. But with her being old she's got alot going on. Hopefully Simon will lay down some...
Hyperthyroidism is not as easy to stabilise and control in guinea pigs as many people think and it is still one of the areas from which you can very clearly see the horizon of veterinary abilities but there have been positive steps in the last 10 years.
However, it is still one of these issues...
...rate and my boy is potentially going to trial this medication to see if eases his symptoms…amongst which is drinking more. They suspect hyperthyroidism but blood testing is virtually impossible. I just wanna check they don’t overdose of give ridiculously low. I work in veterinary and my own...
...steam at veggie time. Have given him Metacam in case of some pain. Anything else that the vet might need to think about? No obvious enlarged thyroid, teeth ok, no obvious pain or evidence of URI ( breathing not noisy, no discharge). He’s 5 and a bit. Will try to get a urine sample over the...
I’m sorry to hear this.
Can I just ask whether one of the tests that was done was checking her thyroid function?
Hyperthyroidism is known to cause weight loss despite a good appetite.
Otherwise all I can suggest is increasing the amount of emeraid to 60ml and see if that helps stabilise her
I have had a hyperthyroid pig in the past, my girl Tomie. She was on methimazole a couple of years ago. I'd be happy to answer any questions about what I learned from my experiences with her.
That said, I would get the blood work done first before panicking. It's really not uncommon for...
