...sludge I'm finding it increasingly difficult to feed the piggies. They used to be eat a lot of grass when they could go outside but then got giardia and worms from the grass. I've lost my confidence really that I'm doing the right thing at all. My vet gave me a list of what to avoid...
Poor you! Worms are pretty rare, but they can unfortunately happen. I assume that your piggy has been put on panacur?
I would strongly recommend that you thoroughly disinfect soon after you start treatment (give it a few days to kick in and may its way through the gut - best ask your vet for...
...week she got mad diarrhea. Today it is very watery stools, covered in mucus (in which the piece of blood), fart. I do not know whether it is giardia, other parasites or bacteria. The test results would only be 6 days, so it must be solved right now. I can not wait for the results.
I was...
The other thing I was thinking is Giardia. Guinea Lynx have a comprehensive page on parasites : Guinea Lynx :: Diarrhea One of these is passed intermittently in the faeces so you may get false negative for them. Can you put your country/place of whereabouts you are @DLee please? Your vet is...
...metronidazole is given orally, it kills anaerobic bacteria which can be in deep wounds and abscesses. It also kills protozoal infections like giardia in humans. It seems to be quite gentle on the gut, plus its a nice taste! I am soaking pencils foot in dilute hibiscrub before applying the...
...into this sort of thing. You can ask your vet to give her a ring first if you like, I'll dig out the phone number if you need it :) If it is Giardia though it might not show up, this bug comes down in "Showers" in the faeces so you might get a negative result. When Petal had the upset tummy...
...posters.
- please have the poo tested (cultured) in case there is a highly contagious element. The protozoa @gizzy mentions is called giardia.
- do not bond your bereaved piggy with a new one, in case it is the (unaffected) carrier of whatever is causing the deadly diarrhea. Some extreme...
...a fecal float, tests for microbes, bacteria & parasites. Local places do not do the same in depth test. However as Pebble may have mentioned Giardia (Which could be a possibility) comes down the intestines in showers, so some samples may not show it in them & several may be needed. Chester...
...ago. Her tummy got so bad that I thought there was nothing to be done - we tried various treatments thinking she'd picked up something called Giardia from the grass somehow. It took nearly 6 months for her tummy to settle.
Last year she did not go out on the grass at all (which I know is not...
I think I have Mary's number somewhere, as Elphie needed tests last year.
We're based in Milton Keynes, although our vet is Simon in Northampton.
Elphie's poops are more poop-shaped today, although still not great quality. Just about to collect some healthy samples from Elma for poop-soup.
...may need anti-fungal treatment or she might need a course of Flagyl antibiotic which helped my post-op piggy as we suspected she might have Giardia as that doesn't always show up in tests as it comes down the gut in "Showers" so can easily be missed. Lots of things for you to consider :) I am...
...Been thinking on my journey 'oop norththis afternoon......the wasting/diarrhoea does lead towards some type of intestinal infection with Giardia or Salmonella being the most likely. However it's the incontinence that throws this off - which could be "standard" urinary problems such as a...
Sorry Pebble, I just noticed your post about Metatone and usually I would recommend it too but Giardia can feed off Glucose so would think it is not a good idea to give anything with sugar in whilst using Flagyl.

I am assuming there has been a DEFINITE identification/diagnosis of Giardia in the poo sample....not just a "best guess"?
Panacur is actually described as a "wormer"....and in scientific terms this means it works against wriggly worms of the more visible kind..such as pinworm, tapeworm and...
...pigs although they can happen in mainly outdoors guinea pigs) but can be used to good effect with other bugs that target the intestines, like giardia.
- If a yeast overgrowth (candida) in the gut is suspected, a fungicide like metronidazole is currently increasingly used with good results.
