1 Week Old Babies Teeth :(

If the one tooth grows you should have some wear from that on the opposing tooth. They will still need dental care. I will keep everything crossed that the other bottom tooth is on it’s way and once the top are burred they all grow properly.

UPDATE! So please I’ve found a Rodentoligist 17 mins away from me! :) she also runs a rescue and has 9 years experience! I have been googling and researching like mad! And I got in contact with Vedra at Cavy Cambridge trust she gave me the number to a lady who’s epereanced! I’m so pleased I will be making a appointment to see her very soon x :D thankyou so much for all your help everyone! Looks like these babies are staying with me x :D :D

I’ve been mulling over how to reply to this because I don’t want to sound negative, but please see a cavy savy vet who knows their dentistry for a diagnosis first.

I am sure there some wonderful rodentologists but they aren’t vets (look into what it takes to qualify) and honestly elsewhere I have come across one who although usually on point a lot of the time, has given shocking advice on certain topics. I know it’s devil and deep blue sea but honestly I would be taking them, if you can, to cat and rabbit for a diagnosis and then deciding if a rodentologist could do the ongoing care.

Sorry to be negative but Guinea Pig teeth are so difficult - even most vets don’t do well with them.

:agr:You really need to see a cavy savvy vet who is good with teeth first for a diagnosis as @Katiedid said. I can understand your excitement at finding a rodentologist close to you, but you do really need to see a vet first. You have to be so careful with teeth,

She’s experienced and owns her own rescue I got in touch with her though Cavy trust Cambridgeshire she works along side Vedra at Cambridge. She has been trained to do dental work I have been talking to her via text message don’t worry I will make will make sure they are in safe hands x

Blimey..I can't believe that vet quoted £62! What on earth for? When Bramble was dealing with nerve damage in her face she needed her incisors burred every week, it cost £17 a time and she was out the back for all of 2 minutes! I hope you manage to sort the little one out :)

Firstly, Vedra is not a vet and the rodentology qualification is not an accredited qualification, but a made up one. I have lost count of the number of guinea pigs who have come to TEAS after receiving very poor treatment from either the CCT or various rodentologists. Rodentologists clip teeth, which is dangerous and can result in infection getting into the pulp cavity. This can then lead to abscesses, damage to the jaw and a guinea pig with serious dental disease that will need lifelong managing at best and death for many.

I know it all sounds like the perfect solution, but tread very carefully.

Thankyou the only problem is I cannot afford £60+ every 4 weeks ? :( I’ll go to the other vet for a consaltation and see how much they are :( this is stressful I want to help my babies just feel like I’m failing at being a good owner.

What is the diffrence between a burr and manual? Sorry if i sound thick x

Would that be for both do you think? Or eatch and how many weeks inbertween ? x

Just asked the Rodentoligist what she uses and she said bone Rongers and hand held files?

My vet charges £18. £60 is ridiculous.

A dental burr I like. A dentists drill - or a dremel drill, it rotates to file the teeth down.

What she uses is like a clipper (like a pair of wire stripper pliers) then she files down.

The burr stands still less chance of cracking the teeth allowing infection into the tooth root.

Ah thankyou May I ask if that’s just for 1 piggie? x

Just looked up bone ronguers on the internet and they are clippers I don't think I'd like them used on my piggies teeth :yikes:

Oh Meg my heart goes out to you. It looks as though this may not be the option it seems to be. I think you may not want second best for your babies, but you have to go with what your heart tells you. The thought of letting your babies go to Teas is equally distressing. I hope there is a solution in the middle. xxxxxx

It looks like teas is my only option tbh :( I’m heartbroken I could afford 60+ every few months but every few weeks is a total different story :( the rondentoligist is saying that cutting teeth is no different to cutting nails? She said the vets will be 50+ and will want to put them under for the teeth cutting :(

I’ve been watching the burr on YouTube and dose look so much better for the piggie x

I know that you love these babies and I know that you want to do your best for them.

At the moment without a competent vet seeing them you can't tell the prognosis. They each have one tooth coming through at the bottom, the other may also come through so burring may be a short term thing until all teeth are through. However what you don't want to do is cut corners now and damage any chance of that treatment being successful and turn a short term issue into a life long one. Treatment now could make the difference between a normal or relatively normal life and a very difficult life.

As pet owners we make some difficult decisions. It sucks but that is our responsibility. Personally I think you need to find out the prognosis (or burr the teeth at a vets and see if the bottom ones grow) and if it is long term and not something that you can manage financially consider your options. No one would ever judge you for that, we all know that there isn't a magic money tree.

@furryfriends (TEAS) dose it deffinatly look like they will need it to be done every few
Weeks and not just a one off? if they come to you will they stay with you or get rehomed after and do you do Home checks etc ? x

She is talking sh***, mr smoochy bear goes in has teeth burred gets handed back. No anaesthetic- they didn't anaesthetise Dozy either. However if the front teeth aren't managed properly and it causes back teeth issues then finding a vet who will do it without sedation may be difficult. Only a few will.

Thankyou so much xx I do feel awful for them I feel like if it was me that bread them I should deal with the consequences but beacuse I brought her and didn’t know if she would be pregnant or not I feel like it’s not my fault but I’ve been stuck with this decision to make if you know what I mean! I feel like there should be some kind of law/licence to breed piggies not theses people that just constantly breed and not know what there doing it makes me so angry. X

I know that feeling. Having taken on 2 little ones who turned out to be very ill, I felt just like that.

Thankyou I will take them both to the vet for a consaltation once weaned I’ll keep a very close eye on there weight and eating and teeth and if I notice any weight loss I’ll get them to the vet ASAP x for now I’ll try and stay clam and enjoy the time I get to spend with them and if it turns out the vet fees are to much and they need it doing every few weeks then teas will be my only option x

We have a guinea pig here, who only has one incisor. She has that burred every three weeks. They are all different and there is no way of knowing without getting them checked by a vet with good dental experience. We don't rehome the guinea pigs who will need ongoing veterinary treatment.

There are probably laws about breeding etc but the unscrupulous don't care , at the end of the day they only want money perhaps Teas would let you, look around. I've heard they offer top quality care, perhaps you could. Go up to see them. Have a word with them Meg
