I went to get a single girl today with intention of bonding her with pepper so I could rehome the two, however there were 5 babies and I is i couldnt leave without them all.

At least 3 show signs of manage mites. Obviously I am not a vet so will be taking them for "formal" diagnosis and the older definate girl clearly needs injecting if it is mange as too bad for spot on in my opinion. Obviously could be fungal but it isnt ringworm as its not in the right pattern which makes me think mange as seems very bad.

Note they have been quarentined and are not near my pigs.

I have started a sexing thread as I was supposed to have 3 boys in one carrier and two girls in other but not 100% sure that 2 of them are correct.

in addition their weights bother me. One is a teenie size and I dont think it should be away from its mum. 4 are above 240gms (biggest being 317)

littlest is only 134 :(.

Any advice welcomed re babie care welcomed.

Also as they are mange infested (suspected) is there anything I can do for their skin as I do feel they are a bit young for a bath. This In addition to whatever vet suggests

Oh and to add to that the definate girl had some white "discharge" around her bits so me being me sniffed it (gross i no lol) and it was fishy so looking like possible uti also.

The definate girl is with the questionable mini pig (so no risk of pregnancy as yet)

The other questionable one is with 2 boys.

All the girls will have a 10 week pregnancy watch wait as they were bought at auction by the person I got them from and there was 10 of them both adults and babies including adult boys.

you are a woman after my own heart. I went to town once and came home with 5 gerbil babies that were going to get put to sleep due to the stupidity of the pet shop they were in.Cant suggest anything for itchiness but just wanted to say you aare amazing for taking on them and their problems. We need more people like you around

Oh what a lot you have taken on! I really dont know the answers but hope you get answers from the vet on Monday. Why are you rehoming Pepper?

Because I have 13 pets and hubbie wants me to rehome some. Now I'm up to 18 so def have to rehome some.

I was rehoming pepper as she fell out with her friends and didnt work out with any other groups I knew hubbie would go mad if I took on any mpre "permenant" ones so was looking for one to bond with her so I could rehome as a pair as i don't want to risk her being kept alone as she is very dominant, the most dominant sow ive ever met!

@Briony_S that sounds like a tricky situation, I hope it works out for you. I hope your husband was not cross when you brought home more pigs than planned!

Eeek, sounds a worrying situation, glad you are taking them to the vets, in my opinion if it is mange mites then all of them need a round of injections. Unfortunately they are all too young for a bath, I know for Lyclear they need to be at least 12 weeks. Please could you post photos?

Oh no.....sorry to hear these guineas may have mites. You kindly advised on one of my posts in the last couple of days, with me having discovered my new guinea may have mites......5 guineas though, you're brave!

Will watch with interest for progress as I go through exactly the same....but with just the one

Good luck

Anthony

you may find pepper will accept a baby. I have two dominant sows , one in each group, that wont accept adults but have happily accepted babies. If you try her with the smallest girl when they are healthy i think you will have more chance of her accepting it as it wont be seen as a threat. Good luck. I just took some hay from the litter box and rubbed the babies with it and then put them in and pebbles was great, mothered them.My hubby told me in no uncertain terms that i wasnt keeping all five gerbils so rehomed 4.What other animals do you have? I have dogs, hamsters and a gerbil

Post coming in photos of the 5 there is only one definate girl at mo she is biggest but only small. I'm hoping for 3 girls two boys as thatll make life easier. Vets tomorrow so fingers crossed they can confirm the oldest questionmark for me. I'm convinced she is a girl although she has a ver largeknob I know some girlies do!

They are all scratching like mad there are dry skin patches and baldness on three. Not in circles and worse is oldest girl her hair on rump is all chewed short and scaly skin underneath.

poor little piggies :( I'm so glad you are helping them. What on earth would have happened to them if you had not?

To be honest I think they would have been bought by someone that didnt know there was anything was wrong. I just hope mini one makes it! Mini doesnt have baldness but is scratching excessively. I just hope he/she is strong enough to deal with it. Mini cant seem to get anything out of water bottle and trys to drink out the others mouths. However seems to be able to manage nuggets and hay. They have had teenie amounts of veg and are really wolfing that down

Poor little thing! Could she have a small bowl to lap from maybe? Mine happily drink from a bowl and a bottle. X

Are you able to syringe her some water or is she too young for that? I know you are not supposed to syringe babies.

When is your vet appointment?

From the photos it does look like mange mites to me, but there could also be an element of fungal too as it is pretty common to get them both at the same time due to the immune system being compromised.

She is only around 130gms so a bit young for syringing. She is lapping from a bowl fine and I have been holding up bottle and squeezing it in front of her and she seems to be able to lap at it. Her big sis is looking after her well and she is copying her so fingers crossed she'll get the hang of bottle soon

Please see your vet re. mites. he has to judge whether they are big enough for xeno 50 yet. Do not bathe babies, especially not ones suspected of mites - that could trigger fits. Make sure that your vet also checks for potential fungal.

It is very likely that the poor little babies have already been born with mites and that their poor mum had them.

All the best for your trip!

They are going to vets. I will not be bathing them I will ask vet about itching x also asking them to double check sexes

Been to vets he agreed with mites diagnosis but said its possibly fungal too. We talked through risks considering age for fungal treatment and I decided to see how they go with the ivermectin. I know ivermectin only kills mites not fungal but he confirmed the risks and I was worried about them being bombarded with a load of medicine so young. He agreed it may be better to do a wait and see method. I am going to monitor and take them back prior to next course if necessary.

hoping ive chosen the right medication to pick first as he said it would be less likely to cause side effects than the intrafungal.

Glad you have a diagnosis. If it is fungal though it will need treating sooner rather than later. I think Imaverol can be used on young pigs, am sure I have some information somewhere on it, let me know if you need it.

If you have the info that would be fab thanks. He seemed to think they were a bit young for intrafungal but if they need it they need it I guess. He didnt say they had fungal just said its a possibility that they have it as well as they can come together.

Its safe for babies I will give the imaverol a go just in case.
