Why do I even look at GPs when I go to pet stores? rolleyes

I've been wanting more piggies for a while - I just love ours and think I could give a really good home to some more guineas, as ours are completely spoilt. We said we would wait until we got a bigger house (they are indoor pigs), and I said the next guineas would come from a rescue. Our 2 boars came from the adoption centre in P@H.

However, I just came back from going to get some supplies at P@H and fell in love with a lone boar in the adoption centre. His name is Wig, he's 2.5 years old, and he is there because his family moved house (off topic: I obviously don't know their situation, but I'd never move if my guineas couldn't come!) - He's bigger than our Fudge, and he's a giant piggy :))

We do have a spare cage, but it's not big enough for 2 pigs. Obviously he would definitely need to be paired up, but the earliest that would be possible is start of September as we'd also need to buy a much bigger cage. In the meantime, I could place him near our boars for company, or put him in the run for floortime and let our 2 boys run outside the run (they have the run of the lounge for floortime) so that they see each other.

I know this is a really silly thought, but I can't help feeling either that the piggy must be really sad that his family had him for 2.5 years then left him in a strange place and that he had to leave his home. I know, I know - I'm reading waaaay too much into this rolleyes

WWYD?

I'd go get him.

You can be more flexible with him just being a lone piggy. I fostered a lone boy who came because there was nobody else with piggies in that he could be next to. He wasn't eating and wasn't interested in anything, he's been paired up with a baby now (avatar) but as soon as he arrived he was straight to the feed bowl and found his voice.

He didn't cause any upset with my existing pairs either.

So if you feel that strongly go and get him.

If you can walk away, do so, if you can't, get him.

It's a dilemma we are all faced with sooner or later. Just see how he gets on next to your boys - perhaps you can even pair them up eventually via share run time; it has happened before!

Thanks :) I think DF still might need a bit more persuading (even though he was the one who called me about him in the first place rolleyes) but I think we are going back to P@H to have a look at him tonight.

He did ask P@H if they would keep him (he's not available until tomorrow), but they said 'first come, first serve' rolleyes

If you really want him, I would go and get him as you will always wonder. We fell in love with a lone degu in P@H adoption centre once. We kept going in there to have a look at him but by the time we finally agreed we would have him, he had already gone :( I often wonder what has happened to the little guy and just hope that he was brought to be paired with another lone degu

Well i think if you can, and you want to- then why not? It sounds like you've already fell in love x)

Keep us updated either way :)

I'd get him too. I have had a few pigs from the adoption centres there, two of my girls (one who later died) were put there because their owner was moving house too. One of my favourite guinea pigs, Russell, was sat in the adoption centre for months before I took him home. It sounds as though you have thought it through and could offer him a fantastic home!

my sister recently adopted a rabbit from the P@H adoption part. we wouldn't trade him for the world. he has poor eye sight, and marks EVERYTHING by rubbing his chin on it. he's the friendliest character ever. the reason for adoption was that nobody wanted him due to him being creepy. Elton is a red eyed white bunny. people can be so harsh :(

if you get him, you won't have to regret it later :p

Thanks for your opinions!

Well, we went back to P@H this afternoon to see him properly. I'd just seen him in his cage this morning, so now that we were thinking more seriously, I asked to see him since he'd just been peeping out of his log hidey on our first visit.

OMG He is GORGEOUS! DF did take a photo with his phone, it's not that good, but I'll post anyway. He isn't quite as big as Fudge, but he is a big boy - he sniffed my hand and allowed me to stroke his head, so it seems he has been handled. He did give the P@H a few warning nips, but I'm guessing that's due to being a bit skittish of his surroundings so normal.

They won't keep him for us, but we are going tomorrow to pick him up! I can't wait to have him home! I'm washing all of our fleeces ready so we have a large supply, and we've already set up his new cage. I'll make sure to take lots of photos tomorrow!

He's lovely! Don't blame you and cant wait to see your photos tomorrow.

x

Thank you :) I know I won't be able to sleep tonight now!

Hope nobody has the same idea as me and is there for shop opening! Luckily I have a half day tomorrow morning :))

oh, he is so beautiful. I do hope it all works out. I think its ridiculous that P&H won't let you reserve, how can they possibly expect anyone to get everything ready and prepped for the arrival of your new pet if you don't know if you are going to do all that then get there and find they have gone to someone else. Seem a very irrisponsible policy.

Good luck - he's very cute, I can see why you're compelled to give him a lovely new home! So irresistible! :)

Aww id get him!

You'd do a better job then them.

No offense to P&H but i got 4 from adoption about half a year ago and they were crawling with mites, one had fungi all over its back and they were all so thin!

The one with the fungi eventually had to be put down because it started to have fits :(.

The other 3 are great now, little beauties!

I often want to buy more from adoption, we saw 1 about a year ago called woody, we never got him but i still to this day wish i got him, he was so pretty...

Anyway ill stop going on!

Get him!

x-c

I did exactly the same thing. Went in for hay, saw Stripes up for adoption and fell in love with him! The girl in the shop asked me if I wanted to hold him and I said to my OH you do realise if I hold him he is coming home with us! And he did. We'd already got a spare house as the boys had just had an upgrade so he became the next door neighbour.

It amazes me that P@H don't give more information about the animal before putting them up for adoption. I was told he'd been living out the back for a few months because there was something wrong with him. She had to ask every member of staff if anyone knew what it was because she had nothing written down. In they end no one was sure, they though it was a bite from fighting and said he had to live on his own.
Turned out it was an absess and I'm pretty sure he was bullied as he gets so distressed if he can see another pig when he's eating. He's calmed down a lot since he moved in with Spike but still has his moments if Spike makes him jump. He's such a loving pig.

I really hope he's there for you tomorrow, if he is you know it was meant to be. If not there's another piggy out there who needs you even more.

He's gorgeous. I had the same thing with Nelly the hamster. I saw her in p@h adoption centre and decided I wanted to give her a home by the time I got in. I had to arrange to borrow a cage so couldn't go back til the next day- but I was there before they opened. :(|)

Hope all goes well tomorrow. x

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

Our 2 boys now came from the P@H adoption centre and I couldn't imagine being without them - I always said I'd adopt from a rescue next time, but our local ones either never have guineas in, or the guinea-exclusive are too far away. They did have running lice when we first got them, which was a bit of a shock for a first time owner, but we treated them with Spot On and changed their cage every day, treated it with Cage and Hutch until the problem was solved; so I'll be keeping a close eye on him just in case the same thing happens!

I forgot to ask earlier - he does look healthy and well treated, and I made sure to check that his eyes were clear. Is there anything else I should be looking out for? Although I'm sure the answer is somewhere on this forum so I'll go looking now!

I seriously hope we get him, we've made his cage up just in case. Cross fingers that Wig comes home with us! I think we'll keep the name, it's cute and suits him! We always say that our guineas are 'wigging' for veggies :))

I keep checking for an up date. Everything crossed here for you! :))

Well.... we got him!

We were at the shop at 9am to make sure we got him, and whilst we were signing the papers, another lady turned up! So it was rather lucky that we did! He's currently in his new cage, sniffing and marking, and eating all the hay. He's ignoring his pellet, so not sure if he's had that before. I gave him a tiny slice of cucumber and a small bit of romaine lettuce and he wolfed both down. He seems to be settling in very well! He definitely needs his nails cut, but I'll lay off for a few days and let him settle in. He's very, very friendly otherwise - been chutting around his cage and coming up to the bars for a stroke.

My boys and Wig have been wheeking to each other, and Skunk has been pulling at his bars non-stop (which he does when he wants floortime) since both cages are currently in the living room. I did let him out once and he made a beeline for Wig's cage, where they were trying to sniff and bite each other through the bars - so Skunk had to go straight back! :o He really is a naughty, cheeky piggy. He hasn't stopped pulling at his bars since Wig got here.

I'm not sure that we will try and bond him with our pigs - they seem to live very happily together and I don't want to upset that. We will get a new cagemate (and cage!) for Wig in September :) Skunk has just been rumbling at and nipped Fudge so we moved Wig's cage to our spare room. S & F are currently having floortime so hopefully they've forgotten about the new addition! Fudge isn't bothered in the slightest though!

So without further ado, here is Wig! I didn't want to be too intrusive, so they're not the greatest photos - but I will come up with some better ones!

Yayyyy, I am so happy that you got him, and he is STUNNING, I love his colours. He's going to have a great home with you!

Thank you! He is such a lovely piggy! He hasn't tried to hide much at all, is very inquisitive, and seems to LOVE being on the fleece as he's just spreading himself out everywhere! :))

A few more gratuitous photos!

Funny how at the mention of veggies, they can go from this:
