Abscess one week post-op

Flushing - make sure there are plenty of bribes!
I used to to put Jemimah on my butchers’ block on top of a towel,
Veggies to keep her occupied and thennaway we went.

Hope this makes a difference soon

She doesn’t look too traumatized from the ordeal. Although that may change when I flush it later. I’m just glad she didn’t have to have anesthesia again, she just now fully recovered and started eating on her own. She’s still eating on her own so that is good.1DF06D3C-4298-4549-89AE-45EABF1B2B9C.webp

I have some pain meds left, the vet didn’t say anything about giving her more pain meds, should I give her some a little before I do the flushing tonight?

First flushing went really well! I was scared she would be squealing and freaking out and then I would freak out, but the worst part for her seemed to be me trying to hold her head still to get to the abscess. I gave her pain med about 15 min before I flushed so hopefully that made her more comfortable. I got really attached to Sven when I had to syringe feed him and take care of him, I’m really going to be attached to this little girl after this whole ordeal!7701992F-FD5A-437E-8331-7665B94443F8.webpFD3C5710-9B6F-4A4C-9252-E2E29ADF3C08.webp

How is little Anna today? Could you get someone to hold her head so you can get on with the flushing bit? Would that help or hinder?

She’s so little I think more hands on her might hinder. I just woke up and checked on her and she is munching on hay and looks good! I’ll be giving her meds and flushing after I take my daughter to school.

I'm sure Anna will feel better soon.flushing the wound is hardwork and pulls on the heart strings.ive had a few abcesses appear on the chin of boys where one or two have had a furrball fight.i flush 3 times aday with hibiscrub, most heal within 2 to 3 weeks, only one returned but all healed well.just keep at it and it will get better.though i feel you are having a rough time. i hope Anna has a speedy recovery.:hug:

Nothing comes out when I flush Anna’s abscess, should there be any puss or nasty stuff coming out? I had to kinda pry open the slit this morning for the flushing, that was not fun.

I had to keep re-opening Fred's, as it needs to heal from the inside out. I'm guessing the vet would have got alot of the pus out yesterday.
He said that he didn’t get much out yesterday. Hopefully it is still working to get rid of it.

Never had to flush out an abscess so can't answer you there. I do know that you have to pick the scab off though:vom:. @GPTV had to flush out one of her piggie's face abscess (Grace?) so she may be able to help.

Sounds like Anna is doing ok
i did have to flush my ageing, Grace's facial abscess out. the vet gave me Zithromax to try to stop the abscess growing & dry it out , (approx 10-14 days if i remember correctly). afterwards he then removed the abscess- he wanted to remove the whole capsule but it had grown round important blood vessels & muscles, etc so he removed as much dried out pus as he could & marsupialised the wound (stitched skin back to her cheek) to help keep it open, she was then prescribed (taken orally) the zithromax for another 10-14 days.

i had to flush the wound 2x a day with Baytril using a 1ml syringe. the scab picking really wasn't pleasant & i would open the wound hole & ease/pull any pus out i could see with a normal cotton bud (Q-tip) this would get the Baytril syringe tip in as deep as possible. although it went against my whole pet keeping ethos stuffing a cotton bud deep into her face/cheek, it did get rid of the abscess (it took approx 3-4weeks to completely heal) but when her hair grew back you would never have guessed she even had an abscess :woot:

i definitely needed another pair of hands to hold her/support her - she hated it & would leap about & run off at any & every opportunity, usually being particularly vocal about it! although with cucumber & a face full of grass, everything was ok again ;)

Its surprising how much closer you get to a piggy when nursing them back to health, the bond always seems a lot stronger between you, even though we feel awful for giving them tough love at the time :(

keep it up sounds like you're doing a great job :):luv: xx

Healing vibes & a Speedy recovery to the ever beautiful Anna.:drool::wub:

Anna is not losing any more weight but she is not gaining the weight back that she lost after her surgery. I decided to start syringe feeding again tonight and she gobbled it up! She is eating on her own just not enough I guess. Her poops are looking a little weird too, can that be from the antibiotic or is it just that she is not eating or drinking enough? Besides being a little traumatized by the flushing, she seems to be getting back to herself, fingers crossed that that means the abscess is going away!

Poops can look a bit weird when you are syringe feeding so don't worry about that just be pleased that she is pooping!

What antibiotic is she on?

In all seriousness if the abscess re-appears definitely ask the vet about Zithromax. Initially my vet said no, and the treatment he was recommending was not glveey invasive. It was a tooth root abscess we where dealing with. I remember having the conversation and saying if that was the only treatment PTS was a better option in my eyes. I did rethink and decide I would allow the procedure but in between that time the vet called to say he had spoken to someone who had done the procedure and it didn't cure the problem. He then did some more research and found that Zithromax very effective (if I remember rightly 98% successful against abscesses in Rabbits in the paper he had found) by this point Fred was on his 2nd or 3rd unsuccessful antibiotic.

Fred did recover well but I remember it wasn't quick I think he didn't eat for about 6 weeks.

The weight gain I do find when they are older it is much harder to get than to re-gain the lost weight. Toby, is completely spoiled when it comes to food but he puts very little on. He dropped to his lowest of 719g, and I've just managed to get him to 754g which was a real task realistically I'd just be happy for him to get to 800grams. I find it's almost impossible to get them to fattening up. They almost also just gain a little bit and then stabilise.

The main thing is she isn't losing anymore weight and is stable.

Do you have a probiotic for her? Not sure if that would help. I give mine bene back once a week or so just as maintenance. All of them love it except for Finn. He thinks it's poison. Lol.

Yes I am just happy she isn’t losing, she’s pooping, and she is perky! She’s a very petite piggy, she weighed 805g before surgery and is now hovering around 700g. She was on baytril after surgery and now she is on trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. He said it is stronger and it is cherry flavored and she loves it, way better than that nasty baytril that I had to force down her throat!

Glad she is finally on the mend.
Just curious wouldn't the vet let you in when Anna was having the abscess dealt with.
Or did you think it would upset you to much.
I took my dog to have her paw stitched. He did not have a nurse on so I had to hold it.
God how I stayed on my feet is a miracle.
Come on Anna get better for Mummy.

Oh when he was lancing and aspirating it? I’m sure he would have if I had asked, but I get a little light-headed and squeamish with stuff like that so I was ok not being there. I’m lucky to be able to flush the abscess without passing out lol! I guess my mom instincts kick in and I can do it! The vet tech said most of the squealing was when they were shaving her fur, she hated the clippers.

I was having a look on YouTube last night to find a abscess flushing video, I found one of something lanching an abscess all I can say is :vom:.

Glad Anna is stable and good to know someone else is as light as Toby. I've started feeding flaked peas to Toby as they are high in fat but only sparingly as they are also high in protein but Toby loves them!
