Acute IC episode

She’s down to 825g today :( Now she’s started on her meds, when should she stabilise again? I’m so worried :(

Give her a week and then the worst should hopefully over. In my own several IC sows who thankfully have got it on the milder side, upping the glucosamine dose and giving it twice daily takes care of the of the squeaky pees within about 3-4 days and the wet bottom in a week or two.

You can offer some additional warm mushed pellets in a bowl twice daily if you are worried about her weight. Keep in mind that a weight loss of 15g in a day is less than two strong pees will weigh and that the weight loss has already started to slow down.

Thank you for your help and advise as always. She isn’t interested in mushed nuggets. I guess I need to give it time x

Thank you everyone. Ellen has been to the vets today and I have been given fresh medicine. She has lost 140g since she was last weighed at the vets a few weeks ago :( Please keep those positive vibes coming her way x
Sending positive vibes for both you and Ellen.
When Lucy was having a flare I always found it did take a week or so for her to settle, even with the meds.
Something that seemed to help was rinsing her veg quite liberally with fresh filtered water prior to feeding.
I shook off the excess but still served them pretty wet, and think maybe the increased water intake helped?

Sending you and Ellen healing vibes. When Holly has a flare it takes a couple of weeks to get her weight stable again. I know they are all different, but try not to worry too much.

She’s down to 795g today and not eaten much of her breakfast :( I’m going to offer her some fresh grass later. I’m so worried today :( She also did a stringy poo. Could that be the antibiotics?

When I have piggies who aren't eating too much, I offer small amounts throughout the day, rather than give them one or two larger amounts of veg. Zoltan was so poorly when he arrived here and just got tired, after eating a small amount, so I would just give him a little something, every time I passed the cage. I also topped him up with mushed nuggets. He ate so much more, by me offering it in this way xx

Sending you hugs Claire, you must be very worried, poor Ellen is there a favourite food that you can tempt her with, I’d be inclined to give her a few syringe feeds if she struggling to eat. X

How long should the antibiotics take to kick in and how much did Zoltan weigh? That’s what’s worrying me the most right now :( I will try feeding little but often x

She’s had a little baby corn which is her favourite. I want to ring the vet but my husband said they only saw her yesterday so probably not much they can do today :( x

Sorry being dozy, hopefully the meds from your visit will kick in ASAP. Are you giving her metacam too? Hope she’ll start munching for you soon, keep trying xx

Can you try with it on a spoon? Jess always prefers it that way. Sure you know what you’re doing :hug:Could you maybe try some oats if she likes them? I’ve even put them in with mashed pellets with madam to try and keep her weight up when she’s having a bad time and she’s had a little munch xx

Yes I’ve tried with a spoon but she still won’t take it 😞

I'm so sorry Ellen isn't perking up as quickly as expected.

There are a few tips from vets and people here which have been mentioned before.

Have you tried mushed up pellets instead of recovery food or including some yummy mashable food like banana or baby carrot or apple food. I always found porridge oats (dry or mixed with water) helped when piggies lost weight.

Lots of healing vibes for Ellen and hugs for you x

Try mushed up pellets, try flavouring them if you can. Didn't see post above.

Will she eat grass atall?

Thank you. I am using mushed pellets but she’s still reluctant to take it I’ve even mushed a banana in with her food :( I fear I’m going to lose her :(

It can take a while for them to start eating properly again.

Looking after and especially syringe feeding piggies is a lonely, thankless task.It is so emotionally draining without everything else going on in the background that means that your normal support systems aren't there in the same way.

Remember that the majority of piggies pull through and that you are doing everything you possibly can for Ellen.

Keeping all paws and fingers crossed for Ellen

Thank you. I just want to see her eat for herself.Do you know how long it should take for the gut stimulant to kick in? She’s so far had two doses and is due another dose at 8.30 x

Keep going Claire, if you're not sure you're syringe feeding properly then read the syringe feeding guide. Any piggies I've had to syringe feed have never liked it but it's for their own good to keep their weight stable. I know it's very stressful at the moment but keep doing it.I found after I'd syringe fed that if I gave them some fresh herbs, they'd eat them. I syringe mushed up nuggets and then syringe water in between. Sending healing vibes to poor Ellen xx

I'd also offer fresh grass after syringe feeding. I found it gave them a bit more of an appetite xx
This is true, it's like when you have flu and you don't eat for a few days properly, your stomach feels horrible and you have to make yourself eat a bit of toast to get that feeling back again.

Hang on there Claire because alot of time when I thought I wasn't getting one of my old boars back to health again, they come back suddenly, sometimes you don't notice a gradual increase in appetite, you just get the wow feeling that they suddenly start eating again. It s like you can't believe your eyes

Thank you everyone. I have offered her fresh grass, dandelion leaves anything I can think of but she just isn’t interested :( I mushed some porridge oats in to her last syringe feed but she didn’t want it :( I’m feeling very sad and stressed right now :(

What do you think the vet will do tomorrow?
