Age of rescue piggie

Hi I’m just wondering if there are any ways to tell the age of a guinea pig from features or anything like that, getting two piggies but as they were found and brought to the rescue I’m getting them from, they don’t know how old they are so just wondered if there’s anyway I can find out the age? They think roughly a few months or so but not sure. If anyone can help that would be great

There's not a way to tell the age of a guinea pig sadly. Usually if they are fully grown then you can say they are definitely 8 months or over. There are a few things that might be more obvious in older piggies e.g. I adopted a neglected piggy who had overgrown nails and was very skinny, the rescue had started her recuperation and nail trims and I took over. We estimated that she would be around 3 years or over but then she gained weight but her bum stayed skinny which I felt meant she was older and when she got a haypoke we found she had the start of cataracts and the estimate jumped to 5 years and over. As pigs get a bit older sometimes their nails can start to curl even when short but its not a certain and there isn't a set age this can happen from. Also, if they were allowed to have their nails too long previously, this can also cause the nails to curl.

Sorry, there are now clear age defining features but you are welcome to post a picture so we can tell you roughly whether your piggies are likely babies/subteenage, sub-adults, young adults or mature. Anything more defined than that is unfortunately not possible.

They look like teenagers to young adults to me; they seem to have most of their size but look still very young. I would put them around 12 months with several months' leeway either way.

She’s still settling in but she does like to curl up in her hidey, her hair is crazy! I had to trim it today and I don’t think she’s happy with her look
