i've decided that if he hasn't eaten anything by tomorrow morning I'm going to start syringe feeding him i can't let the little man down :(

ive got some critical care from the vets but do i just mix it with water? ive never used it before :{

also when i pick him up he makes this vibrating noise not really sure what that means :{

you really need to start syringe feeding him today. you mix critical care with warm water and feed it to him warm.

GP's are grazers so cannot go very long without food

ive just managed to get 8ml of critical care down him but it wasnt without a fight!

how much do i need to give him?

If he's finding it hard to eat I would start syringe feeding him to make sure he doesn't loose any weight. Is he still on metacam or did he just have one dose at the vets? It may be that the effect is wearing off and he's feeling sore again. I would also add the probiotic to the food in the syringe so you are sure he's getting it. Leave it an hour or so after he's had his baytril. Sounds like he needs to go back to the vet as soon as you can.

hes on baytril and metacam for a week, ive just given him some more critical care, ive just given him a couple of big handfuls of hay to hide in and hes now sat eating it mallethead hes also eaten all the grass i gave him earlier mallethead but left his veggies and hard food i really don't know whats going on with him mallethead

weighed him this morning he put on 14 grams since yesterday morning :) still not interested in his pellets/veggies, sat eating the big bundle of grass i just picked him and occasionally nibbling on hay rolleyes not touched his water bottle :( although i suspect he is getting water from the grass ant the critical care hes having rolleyes am going to ring the vets this morning to see what the vet says :)

thats what i thought :) i just find it weird he'll eat grass and nibble on hay but won't touch his pellets or veggies :{

spoke to the vet this afternoon, ive got to syringe feed him with mushed up pellets and a little bit of critical care, and after the weekend ive got to gradually start reducing the amount i give him in the hope that he might start eating for himself :) if he doesn't improve then my vet is referring me to a exotic pet specialist in aston clinton and see what happens :)

Sorry to hear the little guy is still having problems. When one of my gang wasn't eating and was having to be syringe fed every couple of hours I also made up little "balls" of mushed up pellet/critical care and left them in the cage for him. Before long he was munching these too.

Hope you have some improvement soon.

I hope your piggie is eating soon. Like Sue said what a good vet to refer your piggie to a specialist.

i took JJ to see a rodentologist (who i found by contacting vedra from CCT) and she has checked him over and he has thrush rolleyes so he is on a course of daktarin for 3 weeks and hope that it clears up, he is also eating veggies now but ive still got to syringe feed him :)

Glad to hear you have found what is wrong, hope he feels better soon x:)

*UPDATE*

JJ is doing well still syringe feeding him rolleyes and he will only eat hay, cucumber and dandelion rolleyes but i have noticed hes got a bald patch on his back ?/ not really sure if its because hes stressed or if its something else ?/

It could well be stress, possibly the start of mites due to illness and stress. Keep an eye on it for the next day or so and if it worsens then I would pop him back to the rodentologist.

Wrap JJ in a towel and take him in the warm. Cuddle him and talk to him and make it seem like a treat. Perhaps offer him other foods such as lush grass as well.

It is hard to syringe feed especially if the piggy doesn't like it. It feels like force-feeding them and they do kick up a fuss.

Bear with it though as I am sure it will be worth it in the end. He might not feel the same as you do at the moment, but he will benefit from it in the end .... I am sure.

You are obviously a very caring owner and love JJ very much! :)

thats what ive been doing :) i wrap him in a fleece (which has holes in it where he chewed it! rolleyes) and offer him some grass and cucumber etc and i always make sure his feed is warm :) i love my guineas very much i mean how could you resist this beautiful face

i took JJ to my rodentologist this week because he was still not eating properly and the bald patch on his back was worrying me. ive now discovered he has a fungal skin infection which is where hes got his mouth infection from rolleyes so hes still on the daktarin and ive got to bath him with nizoral twice a week ( he detests being bathed!) and hes also on dida tablets which should help the infection clear up abit quicker :)

Poor JJ, he's certainly not having it easy. Hope the meds help and he's feeling better soon xx

hi everyone :) just a quick update on JJ he is almost recovered now :<>:<>

his hair has nearly all grown back and he is so full of himself! :))

And his story is going to be published in the next CCT newsletter! :<> my vet was asked to right and article and she chose to write about my little darling JJ :)

Great news, I'm so pleased to hear he's doing so well. I have a pig with long-term oral, dental and fungal issues and I know how difficult it can be to work out what is going on.

Now I will know who I am reading about in the next CCT newsletter!
