Hello. Hoping to hear some advice for Florrie, my 8 year old guinea pig.

She was diagnosed with a URI on Friday and given antibiotics (Batryl I think) and pain killer. Saturday she started to go off food and her poop became soft. I stopped veggies, however after more medication she developed diarrhoea. I syringe fed pellets and encouraged hay, though she eats only a few strands every now and again. She will drink water occasionally too. But she definitely is not herself!

This morning she had bad diarrhoea and I did not give her Any more medicine out of worry. She has not really popped today, other than a few liquid movements. Her belly is making loud noises. I have seen her eat a few bits of hay and pellets today and now syringe feeding critical care. However, I don’t know what’s best for her. Is the antibiotics making her worse? Should I continue tonight until contacting vet in morning?

Just want to do what’s best.

I’m sorry to hear this.

It would be best if you could call an out of hours vet tonight for advice.

Baytril can cause a digestive upset but full on diarrhoea is an urgent situation.

Weigh her each morning and syringe feed as much critical care as you can get her to take (but enough to keep her weight stable each day - a minimum of 40ml)

I hope she is ok

I am very sorry. Baytril does soften the poos and can cause loss of appetite.

Fluid diarrhoea in guinea pigs is however something that needs to be seen by your vet because of the risk of dehydration. Please take your piggy off all veg and call the vet clinic first thing in the morning for one of their emergency slots on the day.

They may have to change the antibiotic if baytril is not tolerated well.

Wishing you all the best.
