Ants?

I have a bit of an ant issue in my room so I need to buy some ant traps. They’re getting in my piggies cages but I’m trying to keep my pigs in a different part of the cages that the ants aren’t in the best I can. Is it okay to put some ant traps OUTSIDE my guinea pig cages? In a place the piggies can’t get to them. Not in the cage just near them to help get rid of ants in that area of my room.
 
I didn't know what an ant trap was, so googled. This came up:

An ant bait contains a mixture of food and a slow-acting poison that worker ants—the ones you see out and about—collect and bring back to the colony to share

Could that be a problem if ants are taking poison back to the piggy's cage?

We don't often get ants inside in the UK. Keeping all surfaces free of food crumbs or stickiness, keeping all food in sealed containers, is usually enough. Can you make natural ant traps with sugar or jam somehow?
 
Strong smells can help deter them. So if the nest isnt in your house and they're just walking in from outside then these strong smells might work to keep them out.
Vinegar, lemon, mint, neem oil.

These work for lots of insects. I've used mint and neem oil before. If we have a summer with lots of wasps I rub mint oil round my window frames and it stops wasps coming in when the windows are open. Piggies eat mint so I presume the oil is piggie safe especially if its not in the cage.

Often ants just wander in any gaps so putting it around any entrances would be a good place to start.

I get ants in my room at work, they run all over my desk. There's no food in there or anything for them but just a gap under the fire door next to my desk and they walk in there. I had similar in an old house I rented. So blocking cracks and gaps could help.

Thank you for the advice! I’ll try make a spray to put on the ground near the piggies that’ll keep ants away from them and then put ant traps down away from the piggies.
I made a mixture of water, peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus oil which has been doing a decent job at keeping ants away for the most part.

Another question if you can help with it.
Will the ants do anything to the piggies?

Right now they all seem to be normal but I don’t want anything to happen to them in the next few days while I’m working on getting rid of the ants.
