Dental Any experience of abscess under jaw?

All checked, Kim is pleased with his weight and said that the size of the abscess will make it easier to get at. They ideally want to take it out as a whole capsule but depending on what’s going on in there, they might have to marsupialise it and stitch it open for me to flush out. Oh and all being well I can go back and pick him up tonight 🤞🏻🤞🏻

We are finally home! He’s had the abscess lanced and stitched open so I can flush it out twice a day. He’s a bit spaced from drugs and feeling fragile but he’s doing ok. He’s eating which I’m really pleased about 😊 It’s been a long day but hopefully he can start to get better now 🤞🏻 Going to have a shower then I can feed him and then feed myself 😂

Any advice for flushing the wound? It’s only a small hole that Simon has left open, what’s the best way not to make Chunk and everything in the vicinity soaking wet?

I think I’m going to need more pairs of hands to hold him and syringe flush the wound 😬D3E4A7F3-5B04-40AB-827B-08B93C5F84D3.webp3F692DFF-6E54-4A47-9BDC-C5C826F356DB.webp

Wow that was a big abscess!
Grace had one on her cheek she had Zithromax orally for about 2wks, then the abscess was marsupialised, the vet said the pus had dried out really well & was flakey, but the abscess had grown around muscles/viens etc. So couldn't remove as a capsule as hoped.

I was giving the Zithromax for about 2-3 wks after the operation & to help clear it from any infection.
I was also cleaning around the wound/hole with diluted hibiscrub, poking a cotton bud right into the open cavity in her cheek to keep it open & then flushing the hole with baytril, squirting about half a 1ml syringe (no needle) in the hole & leaving it to drain out naturally.

I kept grace indoors at the time & for the first 3-4 days on puppy pads to stop any bits of bedding getting into the wound, just small piles of hay low down so as not to fall down into it (hay racks etc)

The first night grace was the perfect patient, let me flush & poke no issue. The next morning a bit fiesty
& after that.... Well I struggled with 2 of us to flush it etc. Although she never lost her appetite at all throughout it.

I think it was around 5+wks of meds & about 2+ of flushing it :(
They have to heal from the inside out, so I was gently squeezing pus out with the cotton bud/q-tip after rubbing the scab off of it.

But looks like Chunks is in a more sensitive /delicate area. What did Simon or Kim say about cleaning it/how vigorously?

Manuka honey has been used successfully on some Guineas. Ask the vet if suitable to try for chunky.

Speedy recovery & healing vibes gorgeous little Man.

Get well soon and good luck.

So flushing the wound is definitely going to be a two man job! He was like a bar of soap! I managed to get about 3ml syringed in but not sure how far it went in, seemed to just come back out straight away? I will have to pursuade my husband to help me out tonight I think!

He is eating really well so I might speak to Kim and see if I can slowly start to reduce his syringe feeds as he has only dropped 20g since yesterday (I’m hoping that was the abscess!) something has got to give, I’m getting up at 4.45am to make sure I can get him all sorted before I go and sort my horses out and then go to work 😴😴

Thank you for sharing your experience, I’m expecting it to be a long old process! I only managed to speak to one of the nurses last night and she just said to flush it with boiled cooled water and try and massage any gunk out, easier said than done! I will try and speak to Kim today and see what she says 😊 he is happily sat in a big pile of hay munching away 😁

Do you want a chat about flushing etc? I can ring you when it’s convenient for you. I’ve dealt with loads of abscesses and hate to admit, that I love a good abscess. I need to get out more!

If you would like me to call you, private message me your no and a good time to call xx

Brilliant news that Chunk is home and eating. Held you in my thoughts yesterday, know how worrying it is when they are at the vet. Looks like a big abcess, but they always look worse when they are shaved. Can't add to the advice given really, only access I've dealt with was on my daughter's pet rat. That had to be flushed twice a day and gently squeezed.
Hopefully Chunk feels much more comfortable now and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
Sending hugs.xx

So glad Chunk’s abscess removal went well.
My experience of flushing an abscess was on Jemimah’s rear end.
I used my butchers block with an old towel- made sure the Hibiscrub was ready, syringe at hand and cotton buds too.
Not forgetting the essential bribe of veggies.
Then fetch piggy and clamp with one hand while syringing with the other.
Be prepared to get wet.
I would imagine that trying to syringe under the chin is much, much harder and I think you’re right in needing a second pair of hands.
Hope it goes well.
It is worth all the work in the end

How is Chunk doing? Hope he's doing well and you are coping with the abscess flushing.xx

He’s doing well thank you! He’s got attitude back and is eating well, he weighed 1.01kg this morning which I’m super happy about! I’m not sure if we are doing the cleaning right but we are keeping on with it, we are having a check up with Simon on Wednesday so he can tell us how we are getting on. Fingers crossed he will be abscess/illness free soon!

This is what his wound looks like at the minute

Looking good!

Brilliant news. His wound looks much smaller, hopefully Simon will be pleased too. Fingers crossed.
Well done Chunk (and mum).
Hugs.x

We gave Chunk his usual clean tonight and we couldn’t see any fresh pus I don’t think. However the neck of the wound is really starting to scab up now and if we try and remove them, it’s making him very sore. The dissolvable stitches are still in so hopefully they will keep everything in place for now. Should we leave the scabs alone?
