I just saw this in the run. Christian, Meg and Velvet are in there today. It is about 2-3mm in diameter, looks round and is in a patch of wee. The wee was a bit red but that could be cos of the red stem from the Rainbow Chard they had last night. Don't know which piggie it is from. They all passed health checks yesterday. I noticed it as Christian was there giving it a lick and a smell so it is probably from one of the girls. I looks like there may be a couple of small seeds in there too. They had some strawberry tops yesterday (as a treat - not an everyday occurance) so they could well be strawberry seeds.

It looks suspiciously like a bladder stone?

I agree - my first thought was a passed bladder stone as well; especially if it is hard.

It is quite hard. In that case it's probably from Velvet then as she had a load of bladder sludge a few weeks ago but I managed to flush it out by syringing water with Pro-C in every day for 2 weeks (She would take more water with Pro-C than just water - I did add the Pro-C to the water on advice from the vet). She hasn't been having squeaky wees though. Poor thing that must have hurt! Does she need a vet visit now that she as passed it for a general check? Should I take the stone with us?

You do not need to see a vet unless she is showing symptoms of acute cystitis or bladder trauma (bleeding and serious pain) in the coming days; it can sometimes happen in the case of a passed stone. Sows can pass stones without showing any discomfort or bleeding if the stone is small enough.

I would recommend to put her on cystease capsules (1 capsule a day mixed with 1 ml of water and syringed) in order to help ease any inflammation and discomfort in the bladder. I would also keep the stone in case you need to see your vet.

All the best!

I have just made an appointment for tomorrow at 11.15. I will take the stone with us. Is it this that I need to get?

Amazon.co.uk: cystease capsules

Will she need it every day for the rest of her life or just for a bit while the bladder calms down?
Yes, those are the ones you need. We give them to Mavis. I find it easier to mix with 2ml of water and give to her 1ml morning and evening. This works for us as Mavis is on long term Metacam which she has twice daily.

We mix it in one of those tiny jam jars you get in hotels/cafes. Always mix it a few hours before you need it as it is difficult to dissolve. We pop it in the fridge until we need it.

I do the same with my own cystease for my currently several IC piggies - one of them has unfortunately had run time on cleaning day just before I noticed and has obviously passed the bug on via scent marking bum wiping. I use some old vet medicine bottles but the principle is the same. :(

If you see a vet tomorrow, ask for metacam if they aren't prescribing it already.

I also use Cystease for Lucy and make up a 2 - 3 day supply at a time.
I tend to give it to her for a month (1 packet lasts 30 days) and then take a break and see how she is doing.
Sometimes she will then go weeks or a whole month before she shows signs of needing it again, but I find if I do less than a month she flares again much quicker.

I have ordered some Cystease. Good to know I can make up more than a day's supply and keep it in the fridge. Do you use 2 tablets for a 2 day supply and 3 for a 3 day?

Christian is on long term Metacam so I have some already. I'll ask the vet what does to give her. I think last time it was 0.4ml twice a day.

That is a full dosage, which would be OK just after aborting a stone; in order to minimise the risk for the bladder.

Poor velvet, my late mummy pig had a bladder stone and Simon maddock plucked it out, I could hear her squeal. They must be very painful.Hope she's feeling better soon x

Thanks Gemma. I didn't hear her squeal or anything. She was out in the run and I had the patio door open. I would think it would have hurt quite alot. Maybe she did squeal when I went upstairs for all of a minute.

Bless her, hope she's feeling herself soon xx

Wow, these piggies certainly keep us on our toes. Hope she gets on ok at the vets. She’s a good girl taking her ProC. I have no trouble getting cystease into Holly. Must taste ok.

I was hoping someone would say that! I've ordered it off ebay (a lot cheaper than Amazon) so hopefully it'll arrive soon.

Lucy also happily takes her Cystease - I feed it from a syringe, and it looks like you and Velvet are already pros at syringe feeding!
Thanks! I have syringe fed her Pro-C in the past. She wasn't keen on the Baytril when I had to give her antibiotics though as she thought only nice stuff comes in a syringe!

No one is ever keen on Baytril! I think Cystease is much nicer.
And can I ask where you get your pro C from? I might have to try this with Lucy next time she is having a flare.

Betsy loved Baytril when she had it. She is one straaaaaaaaaaange piggy!

I got the Pro-C from Amazon. Just put a pinch in an egg cup of water, give it a quick stir to dissolve it (I do this with the syringe) and syringe in as much as Lucy will take. It's so much easier than just giving plain water as it must taste really nice. Smells like poo though.:vom:

When I got Velvet out of the hutch this morning, she had a thick creamy discharge. Could this be just a humping session from Christian or something to do with the stone from yesterday? Should I mention it to the vet?

Velvet Discharge 2.webp

I would mention it to the vet. We all know what boar glue looks like and how it sets solid, so this might not be that. Best to tell the vet anything that’s happened and concerns you.

Could be sludge or an infection. Definitely mention it to the vets when you see them later. Fingers crossed for the lovely lady
