Hi, I've always grown a bit of parsley for the pigs, but as the gang has increased so has the veg patch!

I was just wondering if anyone else is fighting the battle against slugs, sparrows and blackfly, to bring their pigs fresh from the garden produce daily?

would love to see some pics.

when it stops raining ::) I'll post some pics of my backgarden veg patch

Jane.

hi yes i planted some sprout and broccoli seeds this year and i also grow lettuce and it has been a really bad year for slugs and snails by dad even had his leek plants eaten by slugs and it is amazing were they hide i have found them under the rims of plant pots and you have to get a stick to poke them out :tickedoff:

i grow my own.cant grow fast enough they nibble away at it each day.i have now got 17 so takes a bit to feed the herd :P

We grow lots of our own veg - and there is always plenty for us, the piggies and often the neighbours too!

beer traps are supposed to be good for slugs. Sink a jar close to the veg patch and pour in beer. They climb in, can't get back out again.

When I was weeding the garden, i put some uprooted weeds that are cavy friendly (dandilion and a few others whose names I can't remember 98) into a large plantpot. free cavy food ;D

Just wanted to say beer traps are fab and also another great cheap thing to grow, Every year we buy a bag of natural popcorn and plant them in several troughs and my pigs think the shoots are caviar it's much cheaper than buying seed packets too, And what do we enrich the compost with, why guinea poo of course!

i grew a few carrots last year but i'm growing cucumbers this year! i'm no good at gardening, i can only concentrate on one thing at a time! ::)

can guinea pigs eat the leaves of the broccoli 98) my parents grow allsorts and i always take home a piggy bag ;D when i go to visit :)
I'm growing basil, parsley and lettuce in pots as i only have a little garden :)

Natural popcorn is the popping corn you buy for making popcorn yourself. Holland and Barratt sell it and i think Asda do aswell.
Its great shoots are visible within a few days and little effort is required short of watering.

I dont grow my own veg, but my sister has started this year and am hoping to get some veg off her - with the prices of everything going up this year I'm deffo going to try and grow my own carrots and other stuff next year...

My local greengrocer gives me a bag of scraps / reject fruit and veg whenever I ask too. It is 95% perfect - just not good enough for sale which I think is a little silly but that is another story. It is organic too!

can't get the picture from the phone onto the computer.... I'm so proud of myself and i want to share by back garden veg patch >:( i'll have to use my proper camera.

Wow, these veg patches look fab......... I'm growing Runners, broad beans, courgettes, carrots, tomatoes, lettuces and cucumbers.... This is my first year growing and I'm addicted, i love it!

That looks amazing, I love the raised beds. It reminds me of the allotment I used to have before I moved :'(

I only have a small concrete back yard but grow stuff in pots...grass, dandelions, beetroot, sweetcorn, tomatoes, celery and vetch O0

I know where to come for my vegs ;D. Your veggie patch looks great joosie miss loosie... how has the weather affected things though?
I have runner beans and courgettes growing for the first time. Peppers, strawberries (waste of time! ::)), tomatoes and lots of herbs .... the slugs and snails are causing a problem with the wet weather and I don't like to put slug pellets down as we have lots of hedgehogs that come through our garden every night. I feed them with hedgehog pellets every night which probably encourages them to visit me! ;D

Hi, thanks for the completement. The weather is actually helping. its warm and wet, and thats how nature likes it ^-^ the only thing that has been rubbish so far is the carrots i tried. No tomatoes yet, but i've got cucumber and kale coming out of my ears, plus the peas are coming thick and fast now. growing sucess do a range of slug pellets that are organic and pet/animal safe. we use these. they are not the most effective, but a lot better than not using them ;). I'll go and take some photos so you can see the change over the last 2 months.

Oh, I forgot to say, I also have two cucumber plants but only growing in pots though and not doing very well at the moment. I think I will re-pot them today and see if that helps!

def give that a go, the larger the better and lots of nice multipurpose compost. everytime you water put some tomato feed in the watering can. got that tip of my old dad.

heres a pic of the back garden the first year we moved in. the only thing under the snow was mu. mud , mud and bricks xx0 Plus the hedge on the side was the height of the house and a good 3ft wider than it needed to be. Thank goodness for rob and my dad, or it'd woukld probably be a right mess still. :D
