I have three sweet piggies: Rory, Trixie, and Nutmeg, who are all about two years old. They get along very well and enjoy each other’s company. They share a 12-square-foot cage. I don’t hold them often or have much time to spend with them these days due to work. They love head scratches in the cage but don’t love being picked up.

I’m just wondering if I’m not caring for them well by not holding them regularly or spending time with them daily, aside from feeding, watering and cage changes.

Has anyone else had success with raising happy and content guinea pigs without giving them lots of attention?

Any advice appreciated! Pics of my cute girls below.

Please don’t worry, your piggies are well cared for. Your piggies have each other so they are not lonely. They don’t actually need human interaction for anything other than feeding, watering, weekly weight and health checks etc.

My four don’t like being held. I’ve got one who likes to be stroked in the cage but aside from that they don’t want to be picked up. I do spend time in their shed with them, feeding, cleaning, just chatting with them while tidying the shed etc but the only time I have physical interaction with them is when I carry out their weekly weight and health checks. All four of them are very happy piggies

I’m so glad to hear this! I feel very relieved. Thanks so much for answering. :)

My piggies live in my garage. I have three of them. Thea lives on her own in the hutch (her choice) since her friend Lexi left her for the Rainbow Bridge. Misty and Bramble live in a Ferplast 120 next to the hutch. I adopted Misty and Bramble to bond with Thea so she wouldn't be on her own but Thea had other ideas. They have timeshare in the run which is 16sq ft. They are happy living like this and I go in my garage several times a day to check on them and have a chat. Other than that I leave them alone to do their own thing apart from the weekly weigh in and check and to groom Bramble every 2 days cos her fur is completely wild. They aren't really into cuddles I think cuddles are more for human enjoyment than piggy enjoyment but occasionally they have a cuddle.

Micah is ok with an occasional head stroke in the cage, Ruth does not like being petted at all.
They are perfectly happy to chat through the bars and health checks usually result in me being chuntered at, or huffed at
