Hi there, new to the forum but I am an owner of two gorgeous little guinea pigs!
Unfortunately one of my girls Hazel (1.5 years old) has in the last couple weeks developed some dental problems. I took her to vets who told me she had a malocclusion and gave her dental work. A few visits back and fourth then happened and Hazel was not able to eat at all, she’s been wanting to eat but just not able to hold things in her mouth. She’s had an x-ray done and it’s revealed some of her back teeth are being pushed backwards into her jaw, leaving her mouth unable to close properly. My vet is sending over her x-ray to a specialist and is supposed to be getting back to me asap - but I am just so nervous.. I know if I am unable to do anything for her to provide her a good quality of life I will be having to say goodbye to her.. it’s been really upsetting me, has anyone’s piggy gone through anything similar, and has anything been able to be done about it? I’m dreading hearing that nothing can be done..

I am sorry you and your piggy are having such a rough time. I hope someone with some experience of tooth issues will be along soon.

I have no advice other than I know people on here worship Simon at The Cat and Rabbit Vets in Northampton for dental problems some have travelled hours to get help for their guineas I realise it's not always possible though 💐

You will have to take her in for sedation and tooth burring most likely. In the meantime, buy some Critical Care formula, or you can also use pellets soaked to a mushy consistency. Notes on support feeding are on the forum and will tell you how to feed your piggy until she is chewing normally again. Most people used a syringe with the end trimmed to offer their piggy the mushy pellets or formula. This prevents the intestines from going into stasis. The procedure should be fairly straightforward for a vet who has had experience with guinea pigs, but the after care can be a demanding. I hope your piggy will be OK. She is quite young, so will hopefully recover well.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry your piggy has dental issues. I’m not a health expert but if you can get to The Cat and Rabbit Vets in Northampton then they are piggy dental specialist. I’ve taken a piggy to them with a massive tooth root abscess that my vet wouldn’t operate on. It took us about 2 hours each way but was so worth it. They do any treatment the same day and aren’t as pricey as exotic vets. Good luck. 🤞🏻
