Bad box of hay

I would love to go back to compressed hay like PAH stuff it really does make a difference! Will be looking into this stuff too! May as well open my own farm shop with the left overs 😂
It’s never ending isn’t it this hay malarkey. I’ve tried soooo many. The pigs like this meadow hay though and it’s a great price too. I was getting fed up of how expensive other meadow hay brands were.

I’ll send you the half a box of oat hay in my cupboard and that meadow one squished in my outside one too! Not sure how I move in this flat sometimes! XD

I order two and with delivery it comes to £17.10. It’s very compressed bale and I can fit it all, if I’m careful how I open it, in one of the hay box boxes (5kg ones). Then you can split it off the bale and fluff it. I’ve got an unopened bale under the stairs so I’ll get the measurements of it bagged.

Edit- it’s around 60cm by 25cm.
Brilliant thank you! Yes aside from the quality issues, the hay can be sooo expensive. My grandparents lived on a mountainside in the Highlands of Scotland without mains electricity, very self sufficient, scratching a living, and I really think they'd have keeled over at me paying these prices for boxes of dried grass to feed guinea pigs 😊

We are exactly the same! The constant drying rack with fleece, over flowing cupboard with spare hides, boxes of hay and the bin it’s literally a barn!

Our healthy herby order arrives yesterday… still a bit brown but they did she interest in it and have started eating the happy hay co hay too. I will get through this and try out some of the other brands suggested!
I’m giving them extra to play in and they are loving it! image.webp

Nothing like a whopper hay pile to pee in! Looks a bit more green compared to our yellow batch. Glad they’re showing interest in it and the other one now too :) Enjoy boys 😘😘 x

Wow that's great. I'm getting through a lot of hay with 6 pigs and normally have haybox but it's getting quite pricey especially now we're getting into the cooler months. So this would be something of interest.

What's the hay like? Is it cut into small pieces or are there long bits?

I’ve used two bales so far and both have been long pieces. I need to refill my box I keep in the piggy room today and then i
I’ll grab a photo to try and show you.

I'm using a lot at the moment and being less bothered about waste as I used to because it’s not costing me the earth. Which the piggies are happy about. They can tunnel in it and wear it too haha.

It is, I’ll see if I can get it to a rescue as I can’t bring myself to waste a full box.
I would contact them and complain, they may refund you. If its bad hay then chances are the rescues piggies wont eat it either. Mind u they could always use it for bedding in the winter if its soft.

They have started to eat it now so I am just giving them big piles of it! I did contact them on Instagram but never got a reply, I have plenty of options for our next order though!

I’ve recently swapped to Vale Bale Meadow Hay and the piggies have loved it.
It’s dust extracted and super compressed. You can ask for a more green looking bale via email.

This looks worth looking into, with Autumn coming I'm on a hay hunt again. (I was not happy with Haybox and their sneaky postage charges last time.) Though I have had guineas for a very long time I'm new to this buying hay in small bags and honestly it is such a rip off! I would understand it being more expensive to do it that way than to buy a trailer load of hay bales - but the mark up once it's called small animal feed is astronomical.

Lavinia are these waterproof bales - or is it just wrap?

It’s plastic wrapped. I don’t think I’d personally leave it out where it can get wet however.
Also to realistically get the the hay and pull it out the bale to uncompress it you do have to open the entire bag and move it to a different storage bag/bin/box as it’s so tightly packed!

I do hate taking photos of hay as I never think it looks like it does in person. I’ve taken a couple of photos. Both with and without flash.
I’d say it’s a mix of green strands and the usual browner stuff. But like they always say hay is a natural product and will differ bale to bale.
My pigs have really enjoyed it and popcorn when I giving them fresh. Ginny and ruffles love to make tunnels in it and it holds the tunnels well unlike when I’ve had hay that’s shorter strands.45F390E8-72C6-489C-8DEF-615FAB62FD1B.webp252233A7-655B-490E-9703-9E57C5F47ECF.webp4221DD0A-3A27-42CA-B715-AAC65E39D64F.webpDD8C6169-4F7D-4B9D-9CAF-C5E45A79C8D1.webp1AEF8BF0-5AE7-431B-BC8A-B4D527184CA8.webp

Ive got some and I'm impressed! Ordered yesterday arrived today. Very tightly packed in the bag which is a very thick plastic. I didn't ask for a more green bale which is something you can do and there's lots of green in there. Long stem too which is brilliant. Smells so good and is soft. Not stalky in fact it's quite fine. Very low dust.

I've found it hard to beat haybox, for me the only thing lacking was having green hay consistently. I've had others but have been too dusty.

This has ticked all boxes for me. Low dust, soft, long stem, green, smells good, good price and my pigs have already buried themselves in it and stuffing themselves stupid. 😂

First impressions are great, if all bales are like this I'll be bulk buying for winter. I personally wouldn't leave out in weather I would definitely store in a outhouse/shed or something just to protect against the elements.

Aww yay! Yes it comes really fast doesn’t it. Ive used two bales so far and both have been good. So pleased you and the piggies approve too as it’s always nerve wracking making hay recommendations! Haha

It does, it's the fastest any hay has come. I knew my one pair of boys would like it as they'll eat anything and everything (except the cheaper p@h hay, their long strand they'll eat but the chopped stuff is a no no). My girls are super fussy so the fact they dived into it without a second thought is fantastic. My new boys haven't had any yet but no doubt they'll enjoy it as their eating habits have improved greatly.

Never be nervous about suggesting any hay. People are always looking for different ones to try with their piggies. I'm so glad you shared 😊

I had a hay nightmare last week. I thought I'd order 15kg of meadows hay from Haybox instead of my usual Timothy hay. I made a subscription order but because 5 minutes later I changed the delivery date to a day later Haybox so I would be in to receive it. They delivered 6 boxes of meadow hay without my knowledge! I contacted them when I realised they'd taken two lots of money out of my account and they basically said there was nothing I could do and if I wanted to take it back it would be a £10 charge so I debated it as £10 is a big box of hay and I'm trying to be better with money recently! So the hay arrived and it was really yellow nothing like the soft Timothy. I opened one box and tried the pigs with it they seemed to like exploring at First but they were picking the old Timothy hay over the fresh meadow hay then a few days later there were still big piles of the meadow hay where normally the Haybox Timothy would need replacing twice a day! I've never taken hay back before but I would worry for their teeth and health if all they had was the meadow hay which they weren't eating. I explained the situation and soon they will be taking back my meadow hay and exchanging it with 6 boxes of soft cut Timothy Hay free of charge. So I've been lucky really but now I'm on the look out for a soft green hay. May try Healthy Herby orchard hay again but I think there is an issue with green hay this year. Any recommendations for very picky pigs?

Ohh sorry just been reading everyone's recommendations! Timothy.co.uk hay looks amazing! I'm looking for a hay for bedding! @Lavinia 's orchard hay looks really nice and fluffy too! Is the Timothy.co.uk orchard hay really soft?

Yes the orchard grass is lovely and soft @Tara95 why I love it for hay piles with my paranoia about eyes (far too many eye issues in the past!)! 😆 I got another 16kgs yesterday, it lasts me roughly a month with 4 pigs and generous portions :) Always really nice and green and my pigs always love it, obviously the odd hard strand but I’d sleep in it! :))

I'm a bit late to the party but @rp1993 if you contact them i'm sure they'll exchange it for something better. I rang them on Thursday and I'm getting it exchanged this Wednesday free of charge. Xx

Thank you, I'm going to go for it then! It is £10 more expensive than my usual hay but you get an extra Kg and I'd do anything for green soft hay ATM lol 😂

I used to order from Timothy hay Co UK but then they ran out of soft timothy and my fussy piglets will not eat stalky 🤣 so we tried hay box soft cut last month and they love that but now timothy hays soft cut is back I may just get that! They love Orchard hay too 🙈 has anyone had a box of the new batch of soft timothy from timothyhay lately and is it nice and green?

No mine have never been a fan of the hard one either, prefer something they can plonk themselves in the middle of! I don’t get the timothy now with Cleo so I haven’t sorry xx

Mine are the same 🙈🤣 and I'm also paranoid about eyes 🙈 I'm debating just getting them Orchard this month, they never waste that and I still have 5kg box of timothy left to mix in from haybox 🙈🙈

Maybe see if any one has tried it before you order? This batch of orchard is pretty nice so hopefully they’ll approve if you go for that though! :)

They always approve of Orchard 😁 they think it's a special treat though 😂 but I won't complain if it means they eat more hay 🤣 keep that weight gain coming miss nugget 🙈

I had a box turn up a couple of days ago and it's great quality.
